From Desk to Pulpit The Junior Church ’Your God is too small’ BY THE REVD A. MALCOLM RAMSAY, BA, LLB, DIPMIN, NEWTON STEWART, WIGTOWNSHIRE Visual Aids: letter ’J’ and toy Rolls-Royce Would you like to hear a secret? Not even my wife knows it yet! Clue: letter J. Let me tell you. From last Thursday all new cars have a new letter in their number plate: letter J. So my secret is that I have GREER, Fiona is a traffic warden. In her job she is used to at the end of a busy bridge over the River Nith in the town of Dumfries. As well as boys and girls and grown-ups who want to cross the road, she is used to directing all sorts of traffic - cars, lorries, standing buses, cycles and motor-cycles. By watchfulness and busy signals traffic warden on ’point duty’ makes travelling safer for us all. Walking to and from work Fiona is used to seeing the graceful white swans that are to be found in the River Nith. At some times of the year they have their cygnets swimming with them. But what a surprise to see a pair of swans walking across the busy bridge! They were on the pavement, but then one flew into the road and a big lorry knocked it down. Most of the traffic drove carefully past. However two kind men, who seemed to know what they were doing, led the other sad and puzzled swan back to the safety a of the river. Isn’t that a sad story, boys and girls? Despite the kindness of the two men, despite the watchfulness of Fiona, one of the swans went out into the road instead of staying safely where it ought to have been. God cares for us. Policemen, school-crossingpatrol people, traffic-wardens make roads safer. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t have to be very careful. Cross the road carefully when it’s safe to do so. Stay on the pavement if you possibly can. Just think how sad and lonely the other swan must be. bought a new car. The Christian Year I wanted to buy the best. I asked my friends and read the car magazines, and everyone said the best FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST kind of car is a Rolls-Royce. So that’s what I’ve The Message of the Psalmists bought. Don’t you believe me? 8. Bitterness in Babylon: Ps 137 I’m not joking. I went along to Woolworths and BY THE REVD COLIN J. SEDGWICK, MA for 79p bought a brand new Rolls-Royce. Here it is! , KENTON, LONDON (Produce toy Rolls-Royce from pocket.) Don’t laugh! This is a perfectly good Rolls-Royce. This is one of those psalms that make the Right colour, right shape, right design. Only two reader feel rather uncomfortable. It moves, Christian it with it: it’s far too and doesn’t small; things wrong in the space of just nine short verses, from a sad, go. Sadly many people believe in a similar kind of haunting opening (vv. 1-3), through a fierce God. They believe all the right things about him, expression of national loyalty (vv. 4-6), to a bitter
