PASTOR’S PAGE FOR DECEMBER 2012
DECEMBER is here already, the last month of the year 2012. December is, of course, the Christmas
season. So, lots of things are going on in our churches. Let us take a peek:
Sunday, December 2, is the First Sunday of Advent. It is a very busy day. There will be brief
congregational meetings after both church services for the election of officers. Salem’s Christmas Party will
take place in the evening. We are planning to eat at 5:30 p.m. Please bring a salad and/or dessert. The kitchen
committee will cook a fine Christmas dinner of turkey and duck with all the trimmings. A big thank you to
Kyle & Lori Brown for the donation of the meat. The entertainment this year is a hymn sing. Everyone is
invited to participate. There will be games and activities, and, of course, Santa Claus is coming. There will
be gifts for all! Please, come to the celebration and bring a friend!
Monday, December 3, is the Christ Consistory meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, December 5, there will be Choir Practice at Christ Church, 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, December 6, is the Salem Consistory meeting at 8:00 p.m. Earlier that day, around 10:00
a.m., there will be a prayer meeting for pastors held at Salem Church.
Saturday, December 8, is “Santa Is Coming to Town,” at Benigna Creek Vineyard. This is a family
oriented event. It takes place from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Admission is a non-perishable food item. These will be
later given to a local food bank.
Sunday, December 9, is the Second Sunday of Advent. We are celebrating Holy Communion in both
churches. Please prepare yourselves for Christmas Season communion. Please note that the Cub Scouts will
be using Christ Church basement in the evening for their Christmas Party.
1 Wednesday, December 12, the Women’s Guild will meet at Salem at 6:00 p.m. to put together its
annual Christmas baskets for the shut ins. Please feel free to contribute. We need various fruits, candies, and
other snack foods. If you know someone who should be receiving a basket, please contact a member of the
Guild or Pastor Mark. Also, Christ Church will have Choir Practice at 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, December 13, is the date for Christmas Caroling for the members of Salem Sunday
School. We will leave the church at 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, December 15 is the deadline for the January LIFELINE. Please give all your information to
Rose Novinger by this date.
Sunday, December 16, is the Third Sunday of Advent. This is the date for the Sunday School
Children’s Program at Christ Church during the worship service time. During the Sunday School time, Christ
Church will celebrate its Christmas Time of Fellowship with Cookies and Coffee. Mallory Wiest is in charge
of these events!
Sunday, December 23, is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Salem Church will have its Sunday
School/Children’s Church Christmas Program during the regular church service. This is also the deadline for
the UNDER THE TREE GIFTS! This year at Christ church, we are supporting the Shamokin CRISIS
PREGNACY CENTER with baby clothes, etc. At Salem Church, we are gathering baby care items, clothing,
etc. for LIFELINE PREGNANCY CENTER in Millersburg. Please no clothing larger than Toddler 5. The
ADVENT ENVELOPE OFFERING will be given to Haven Ministeries at Christ Church and to Chinese
Outreach Ministries’ Staff Training at Salem Church. The Bidelspachs are deeply involved in staff training.
Monday, December 24, is, as is our custom, the joint Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. This year, it
is held at Salem Church at 7:00 p.m. Please note the change in time. Please come early for a good seat, but
invite your friends and neighbors. This is an excellent time to introduce an unchurched person to the church.
We will enjoy Christmas carols, special music, and, of course, candlelight. So, come, invite a friend or
neighbor, and then bring them!
Tuesday, December 25, is Christmas. Merry Christmas to all! Have a great day with the family!
Sunday, December 30, both churches will observe the Installation of Officers at both churches during
the First Sunday after Christmas as we anticipate New Year.
The Advent Offering Envelopes are in your newsletter.
We encourage each of you to give a special gift to your church toward the heat. Consider it a gift to the
Christ Child. His church would be very grateful!
Until next time, macht’s gut un behaft dich! See you next year!

Christmas presents!
2 FALL FESTIVAL EVENT
Salem Church did a terrific job with the youth group party, the hayride, and Halloween activities. Thanks to
all who made this event a WONDERFUL SUCCESS!
Mallory Wiest and Joy Rothermel did a wonderful job at Christ Church’s Fall Festival. Thanks to all who
participated!
BAZAAR
Salem Church’s Bazaar, held Nov. 3, was a BIG SUCCESS! The Bazaar raised $4958.37 for various
projects. We wish to thank everyone who had a part in putting it together. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE
for making our 5th Annual Bazaar a success. Thank you for all your donations and help. Thank you to Carol
Snyder who took a couple days vacation to work in the kitchen and to all of you who helped her. The food is
our biggest money maker and I think everything went well with the food and kitchen. Our bake table was
very full, thank you to all of you who donated baked goods. We didn't have a lot of food left over but the
leftovers went to a soup kitchen in Shamokin and thank you to Missy Lenker and her helpers for delivering
it. Thank you to Deb Chappelle and all her helpers for cleaning up after the bazaar. The leftover items went
to Valley Treasures in Valley View and thank you to Alicean and John Galloway for delivering them. A list
of all the raffle winners is posted on the bulletin board in the church. We all had a good time and good
fellowship working at the bazaar and we hope you will join us next year at our 6th Annual Bazaar! Thank
you to everyone.

THANK YOU
I want to thank everyone for your prayers, cards, phone calls and visits while I was in the hospital and since

prayers. I appreciate your kindness.

HARBAUGH’S CORNER
December is all about Christmas. The English classic, THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, has been
translated into Pennsylvania German by a number of writers. The latest is by a writer who calls himself
Rutznaas. I do not know who he is, but he did a pretty good job. This was originally printed in ES
ELBEDRITSCH, page 10, of Fall 2012.
DER OWED VOR GRISCHDAAG
‘S war oweds vor Grischdag
Iwwer Ohre, wie’n Topf
Un darrich’s ganz Haus
Hen yuscht dief im Schprausack
Verregt sich mol gaar nix,
Waren zamme g’neschtelt
Net eemol en Maus.
Unner die Fedderdeck
Die Kinner ihr Strimpf
In die Grimmle von Bretzels.
Sie henke am Mantel
Wie drunne im Hof
In en Roi an der Haerd
Hot ebbes gerobbelt
Mit Stift un Schuhbendel
En Zucht wie en Bullbend-Ganz frieh war’n die Kinner
En lautes Gebobble
Im Bett all eigschlummert
Doh tschump ich es Bett raus
Im Draam hen sie Schleckergefress
Ans Fenschder zu sehne
Eifrich draa g’suckelt.
Was der schinner so ‘n Zucht macht-Die Memm mit em Halsduch
‘s hot der Haahne am grehe.
Iwwer dem Kopp
Die Nacht war so hell
Un ich mit mei Schlofkapp
Mit dem Mond uff em Schnee
3 Hab gemeent es werr dot.
Noh runner ins Feier
Schtaub un Russ weit un breet
Aagelangt uff em Feier
So leis wie die Meed.
Es is grad an die Arrewet
Sei Baart weiss wie Schnee
Sei Backe so rot
Un Aage voll Freed.
Es schmunzelt un lacht,
An die Schtrimp die Roi naus
Hot sie voll gschtoppt mit Sach
Un hot gar net gegraust.
Niss, Kichlicher, Kendie
Glee Spielsach, wie Tschacks;
Bicher, paar Kohle,
En Dallbopp wie Wax.
En Peitsch un en Dreedle
Die hot es all nei
In zwee, drei Segunde
War alles verbei.
Der Dicksack, so eifrich,
So flink wie en Haus
Lacht als es recht schiddelt
Hot die Hand an die Naas.
Fliegt der Schaanschde dann nuff
Tschumpt in der alt Schlidde
Peift leis zu der Fuhr
Sie sin schnell abgeridde.
Un eb sie verschwinde
Heer mer ganz leis sei Schprooch
“Hallich Grischdaag, gut’ Nacht!
Bin schon weit, weit zu schpoot.” Ei, grad wie en Pichder,
Un graadaus zu schee
Was sehn ich am wiehle
Kann mei Aage net glawwe,
En acht haschling Fuhr
Mit em Schlidde gelaade
Hoch voll mit em Sack
Gans so voll, schier verschprengt
Un en glee runder Maennli
All rot, mit Geschenk
Er peift zu die Fuhr
Un ruft sie bei Naame
Er yuckt sie zu ziehe
“Nau, all mol do zamme.”
“Ho Descher un Dentzer
Kumm, Brantzer un Nixon.
Hei, Kummet un Koopid
Yah, Donner un Blitzen.”
(‘s war ken Rudolf dabei
Die Nacht war schee hell
Mer hot weit in die Nacht
Sehne kenne. Yahwell!)
Die Fuhr zog menanner,
Fliege nuff uff’s Bortschdach
Un nuff uff der Giwwel
Zum Schannschde sei Loch.
“Whoa,” pischbert der Fuhrman.
Der Schlidde hot gschtoppt
Der Maennli tschumpt raus
Un is graad ans Rohrloch.
Sei Bindel war greeser
Ass es Maennli in rot
Es tschumpt dann ins Loch nei
No translation is necessary! I hope you enjoyed this.
