L’origine / History
Le mouvement des Grands Frères a commencé en Ohio en 1903 et est devenu en 1913,
une organisation canadienne. Le GFGS de l’Ouest de l’Île a été incorporée en 1975. Notre
service des Grandes Sœurs a débuté en 1980. En 1998, nous avons lancé le programme
Mentorat à l’École dans les écoles primaires, atteignant ainsi encore plus d’enfants.
The Big Brothers movement began in Ohio in 1903 and in 1913 became a Canadian
organization. Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Island was incorporated in 1975. Our Big
Sister service began in 1980. In 1998, we launched our In-School Mentoring program,
reaching out to even more children.

C’est d’offrir aux enfants des mentorats qui peuvent changer leur vie, les inspirer et les
aider à atteindre leur plein potentiel. Nous recrutons, entraînons et assortissons des
bénévoles et des enfants afin d’aider ces derniers à améliorer leur estime d’eux-mêmes,
leurs habiletés sociales et leurs habitudes de vie.

MESSAGE DU PRÉSIDENT
Bienvenue à l'assemblée générale annuelle des Grands Frères et Grandes Sœurs de l'Ouest
de l'Ile et merci de vous joindre à nous.
L'année 2015-2016 fut très occupée et bénéfique pour notre organisme. Nous avons créé un
formidable nouvel événement de levée de fonds et amélioré nos services à la communauté.
Grands Frères et Grandes Sœurs de l'Ouest de l'Ile, par le truchement de notre personnel dédié
et de nos bénévoles, a continué de concentrer ses efforts sur notre mission qui consiste à offrir
aux enfants des mentorats de qualité qui peuvent changer leur vie, les inspirer et les aider à
atteindre leur plein potentiel.
L'équipe de la directrice générale, Francesca Corso; l’adjointe administrative Cathy Kudzman,
la coordonnatrice d’évènements et du marketing Martha Beltran ainsi que les travailleuses
sociales Meagan Cichanowicz, Emilie David et Felicia D’Orve, ont fait un travail exceptionnel
afin de rencontrer les objectifs de l'organisation. Cette équipe dynamique et talentueuse a
organisé de nombreux événements d’envergure, dont le petit-déjeuner de la Saint-Valentin, un
événement de réseautage au restaurant Les Trois Brasseurs, le Grand McDon, les activités
mensuelles pour les enfants, ainsi que notre fameux Festival de côtes levées. Nos travailleuses
sociales ont travaillé sans relâche pour attirer de nouveaux bénévoles et ont soutenu avec
enthousiasme les enfants dans nos programmes!
Nous avons la chance d'avoir de nouveaux membres du conseil d’administration cette année,
Michel Dicaire, Louis-Charles Fortier et Matthew Keezer. Malheureusement, le vice-président
du conseil, Monsieur Tim Thompson s’est retiré; nous le remercions pour son dévouement et
espérons son retour dans un avenir rapproché. Le Conseil, ayant établi la ligne directrice pour
l'avenir, se concentre maintenant sur de nouvelles idées qui ont pour objectif d’améliorer le
rendement de l'organisation, du point de vue financier et des programmes. De plus, ils
définissent les responsabilités respectives du personnel et du Conseil, dans le but d'améliorer
nos événements, d’augmenter le nombre d'enfants que nous aidons, de faire des levées de
fonds encore plus profitables et d’adopter une approche analytique afin de mesurer nos succès.
Les Grands Frères et Grandes Sœurs de l'Ouest de l'Ile poursuivent l'utilisation des médias
sociaux, particulièrement pour augmenter notre portée et pour améliorer notre capacité à
récolter des dons en ligne.
Le regard tourné vers l’avenir, en tant qu’organisation au service de la communauté, je vous
invite à vous joindre à notre équipe et à prendre le temps de faire la différence. Que ce soit
comme mentor, bénévole, membre du personnel, du Conseil ou comme donateur, participez à
améliorer la vie d'un enfant. Veuillez transmettre cette invitation à des bénévoles ou membres
potentiels du conseil d’administration; nous sommes toujours à la recherche de personnes de

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the Big Brothers Big Sisters West Island Annual General Meeting, thank you for
joining us.
2015-2016 has been a busy and rewarding year for the organization, having created an all new
exciting fundraising event and improved our services to the community. Big Brothers Big Sisters
of West Island, through our dedicated staff and volunteers, has continued to focus on its mission,
providing life changing relationships to children through quality mentoring programs that inspire
and empower them to reach their full potential.
The team of executive director, Francesca Corso; administrator Cathy Kudzman; fundraising
and marketing coordinator Martha Beltran, case workers Meagan Cichanowicz, Emilie David,
and Felicia D’Orve have done an amazing job of meeting the goals of the organization. This
dynamic and talented team put on many great events, including our Valentine’s day breakfast,
a Networking Event at Les Trois Brasseurs, McHappy Day, monthly activities for the children,
and last but not least, our famous Montreal Ribfest. Our caseworkers have worked tirelessly to
attract new volunteers and have enthusiastically supported the children in our programs!
We’ve had the good fortune of adding a few new board members this year, Michel Dicaire, LouisCharles Fortier, and Matthew Keezer. Unfortunately, board vice-president Tim Thompson retired,
though we thank him for his immense support and look forward to his return in the future. The
board, having set the roadmap for the future, is now focused on implementing new ideas that
provides the organization with larger goals, both financial and program related. Furthermore, the
plan helps define the responsibilities of the board and staff, with the goal of improving our events,
increasing the number of children we serve, raising more funds to succeed at these endeavors,
and taking a more analytical approach to assess our success.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the West Island has continued to expand its internet footprint, using
social media, with an emphasis on increasing our online reach and focusing more on our online
donation capabilities.
As we look to the future, as an organization dedicated to helping our community, I invite you to
join or rejoin the team and take a moment to make a difference. Whether participating as a
mentor, volunteer, staff member, board member or donor, please take this opportunity to make
a positive difference in a child’s life. Please extend the invitation to potential board members
and volunteers as we always want to enhance our talent pool and reach out further into the
community.
It is important to always remember, unlocking a child's true potential creates a future where

ACCRÉDITATION
Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs de l’Ouest De L’Ile (GFGSOI) est un organisme
accrédité, étant conforme aux normes éditées par l'organisme national
des Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs du Canada (GFGSC).
Afin d'assurer une sécurité maximale aux enfants et d'offrir d'excellents services, GFGS a mis sur
pied un processus d'évaluation de ses membres il y a plus de 25 ans. Il en est résulté un nouveau
programme d'évaluation national.
Ce programme est géré par des vérificateurs professionnels entraînés qui doivent être certifiés par
GFGSC.
Un certificat d'accréditation est délivré suite à l'approbation des pratiques de l'agence dans les
domaines de la sécurité des enfants, des services offerts et une excellente gestion. Cette dernière
inclut un processus de consultation avec les bénévoles, les parents et les membres du conseil
d'administration, l'assurance d'une bonne gestion financière et une planification stratégique.
Chaque agence de l'organisation GFGSC est vérifiée aux cinq ans. Les agences sont
aussi évaluées en milieu de terme comme mesure intérimaire afin de s'assurer que les standards
nationaux sont maintenus.
GFGSOI est active dans la communauté depuis 41 ans. L'organisme se dédie au service des
enfants et des jeunes en leur offrant des mentorats de qualité avec des bénévoles. Nous sommes
fiers d'avoir pu offrir nos services à 198 enfants en 2015. En réussissant l'accréditation nous
démontrons à quel point de conseil d'administration, le personnel, les bénévoles ont travaillé fort
afin de faire une différence dans la vie d'un enfant.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Island is an accredited agency, having
successfully met the review standards outlined by the national governing body,
Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada (BBBSC).
As a way to continually ensure maximum child safety and the pursuit of organizational excellence,
Big Brothers Big Sisters introduced a review process for its member agencies more than 25 years
ago. This has most recently evolved in the new national accreditation program. The program is
conducted by professionally-trained reviewers, who must complete accreditation training given by
BBBSC.
The accreditation certificate is granted upon approval of agency practices in the areas of child
safety, service delivery, and organizational excellence. The latter includes a consultative process
with agency volunteers, parents and board members, assurance of sound fiscal management
practices and agency strategic planning. Each agency within the BBBSC organization is accredited
every five years. Agencies also participate in a mid-term evaluation as an interim measure to
ensure adherence to national standards.
Big Brothers Big Sisters West Island has been serving the community for 41 years. It is committed
to serving children and youth by providing them with quality mentoring relationships with
volunteers. It is with great pride that we were able to serve 198 children in 2015. Achieving
accreditation is a testament of the hard work of our board of directors, staff and volunteers, who
strive to make a difference in the life of a child.

LES PROGRAMMES
PROGRAMME TRADITIONNEL GRAND FRÈRES GRANDE SŒURS
Notre programme traditionnel de base est un service gratuit qui jumèle un « Grand » avec un
« Petit » selon leurs intérêts, leurs personnalités, leurs besoins et leurs lieux de résidence. Un
« Grand » est un adulte bénévole qui passe quelques heures par semaine, ou à chaque deux
semaine, avec un « Petit » sur une base individuelle. Un « Petit » est un enfant âgé entre 6 et
16 ans qui a besoin de soutien, d’encadrement et d’une influence positive. Les jumelages ont
une durée d’au moins un an, mais souvent de plusieurs années, et parfois même de toute une
vie. Inscrits par leurs parents, ces enfants sont emballés à l’idée d’avoir un Grand Frère ou
une Grande Sœur. Le Grand et le Petit partagent des activités comme prendre une marche,
faire du sport, apprendre quelque chose de nouveau ou passent simplement du temps
ensemble pour bavarder; les possibilités sont infinies.
Les enfants à qui nous livrons ces services sont défavorisés financièrement, socialement ou
émotivement. Ils ont un besoin criant d’attention et d’encadrement d’une personne autre qu’un
parent, quelqu’un qui peut écouter leurs idées et leurs opinions.

NOS OBJECTIFS:
- Rayonnement dans des territoires à haute concentration de pauvreté
- Rayonnement dans des territoires avec concentration d’immigrants
- Rayonnement à Laval
- Rayonnement à St-Laurent
- Création de nouveaux partenariats avec d’autres ONG afin d’étendre notre portée
- Recruter davantage de bénévoles francophones afin de combler la demande
grandissante des familles francophones
- Développer des outils afin de mesurer plus efficacement l’impact de nos services (nous
participons présentement à des ateliers avec le Centre des Organismes
Communautaire (COCO), parrainé par Centraide)
IMPACT:
Nous mesurons l’impact de nos services à l’aide de questions qualitatives et quantitatives lors
des rencontres de suivi et de façon plus approfondie après un an de jumelage. Les parents
répondent davantage aux questions ouvertes que les enfants. Leurs commentaires les plus
courants concernant leurs enfants, depuis qu’ils sont jumelés, sont :

Moins timide, plus ouvert, semble plus heureux, a maintenant quelqu’un à qui se
confier, a hâte aux sorties, réussit mieux à l’école, s’entend mieux avec ses frères et
sœurs, semble plus confiant, a moins de problèmes, participe davantage aux tâches
ménagères, adore avoir un(e) Grand(e) Frère(Sœur), parle plus
Nous mesurons également l’impact en soumettant un questionnaire au Petit avant qu’il soit
jumelé avec un mentor, puis après un an de jumelage. On soumet à l’enfant 8 énoncés ayant
5 possibilités de réponse (toujours, la plupart du temps, parfois, rarement, jamais).
Les énoncés sont:
- Je m’aime
- Je suis une bonne personne
- Ce que je fais ou ressens est important
- Je sens que j’ai qulequ’un à qui parler
- Il est facile pour moi de parler à quelqu’un
- Je m’entends bien avec les autres personnes
- J’aime participer à des activités
- Je me sens heureux
Et après un an, nous ajoutons les énoncés suivants
- Mon/ma Grand(e) Frère/Sœur me comprend
- J’aime les activités avec mon/ma Grand(e) Frère/Sœur
- J’aime avoir un(e) Grand(e) Frère/Sœur
- Je crois que les autres enfants aimeraient avoir un Grand Frère ou une Grande Sœur
Filles:
On remarque des améliorations dans tous les énoncés, bien que l’amélioration la plus notable
soit au niveau du sentiment d’avoir quelqu’un à qui parler. Dans l’évaluation précédant le
jumelage, 39% des filles disent avoir parfois quelqu’un à qui parler et 61% disent avoir
toujours quelqu’un à qui parler. Dans l’évaluation faite après un an de jumelage, 91% des filles
disent avoir toujours ou la plupart du temps quelqu’un à qui parler. Pour les autres énoncés,
on note une amélioration moyenne de 8% des énoncés qui passent de « parfois » à « la
plupart du temps » ou « toujours ».
Garçons:
L’impact de nos services semble plus grand chez les garçons que chez les filles. Comme pour
les filles, l’impact le plus significatif est au niveau du sentiment d’avoir quelqu’un à qui parler.
Dans l’évaluation précédant le jumelage, 7% des garçons sentent qu’ils ont « rarement »
quelqu’un à qui parler, 14% disent « parfois », 27% disent « la plupart du temps » et 52%
disent « jamais ». Dans l’évaluation faite après un an de jumelage, seulement 4% disent
« parfois », 8% disent « la plupart du temps » et 88% disent qu’ils ont toujours quelqu’un à qui
parler. Pour les autres énoncés, on note une amélioration moyenne de 15%.
Tous les enfants dissent se sentir compris par leur mentor “toujours” ou “la plupart du temps”.
Ils aiment tous avoir un Grand Frère ou une Grande Sœur « toujours » ou la plupart du
temps » et ils apprécient tous leurs activités ensemble. Lorsqu’on leur a demandé si les autres
enfants aimeraient avoir un Grand, 16% des garçons ont répondu « parfois » alors que 84%
des garçons ont répondu « la plupart du temps » ou « toujours », et 100% des filles ont
répondu « la plupart du temps » ou « toujours ».
Bien que notre méthode actuelle d’évaluation nous donne certaines conclusions sur l’impact
de nos services, nous sommes confiants que GFGSOI développera des outils de mesure
encore plus efficaces après avoir complété les ateliers avec COCO.

J’ai été jumelé avec mon Grand Frère John** au printemps 2011. Il est venu
avec la travailleuse sociale et on m’avait promis que nous serions un bon
jumelage. La première rencontre était un peu gênante mais nous avons
« cliqué» très rapidement et sommes devenus amis. Il m’a présenté à ses
parents, ses frères et sœurs, ses cousins et ses amis proches. Je me suis senti
rapidement comme un membre de leur famille. J’ai des souvenirs
inoubliables grâce à lui. Je n’oublierai jamais nos voyages à Ottawa, le
paintball avec ses amis et quand nous regardions des matches ou des
films. Nous ne nous rencontrions pas à chaque semaine, mais lorsqu’on se
rencontrait, il planifiait tout. Grâce à lui, j’ai un nouvel ami, mon chat
Sylvester qui a changé nos vies à la maison.
Je me suis toujours senti accepté par John et ma famille l’aime beaucoup.
Je crois que notre amitié durera toujours, il m’a beaucoup changé. Il est
arrivé dans ma vie à un moment où j’avais besoin de croire en la bonté et
je me suis promis que, quand je grandirai, je serai aussi un Grand Frère
pour quelqu’un qui en aura besoin, comme John l’a été pour moi. John
n’est pas seulement mon Grand Frère, il est aussi mon ami. Nous sommes
encore en contact, je l’admirerai toujours et je suis très reconnaissant de
l’avoir rencontré. J’ai le meilleur Grand Frère au monde.

PROGRAMS
TRADITIONAL BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER PROGRAM
Our traditional “Core” program is a free service that matches a “Big” with a “Little” according to
interests, personalities, needs and also location. A “Big” is an adult volunteer who spends a few
hours per week or every other week with their “Little” on a one-to-one basis. A “Little” is a child
between the ages of 6 and 16, who needs support, guidance and a positive influence.
Matches last for a minimum of one year but more often last for several years and sometimes even
a lifetime. Referred to us by their parents, these children are excited and on board to have a Big
Brother or Big Sister. The Big and Little spend their time together sharing activities which may
include going for a walk, playing a sport, learning a new skill, or just hanging out to talk; the
possibilities are endless.
The children we serve are financially, socially or emotionally impoverished. They desperately need
personal attention and guidance from someone other than a parent, someone who can listen to
their ideas and opinions.

OBJECTIVES:
- Outreach in areas identified as having high concentration of poverty
- Outreach in areas identified as having a high number of immigrants
- Outreach in Laval
- Outreach in Saint-Laurent
- Create new partnerships with other NGOs to increase reach
- Recruit more francophone volunteers to respond to the growing demand of francophone
families
- Develop effective tools to better measure impact (Partaking in a workshop/training through
the Centre for Community Organizations (COCO), provided by Centraide)
IMPACT:
We currently measure impact through both qualitative and quantitative questions that are
asked at follow up meetings; the most in-depth taking place at the annual mark. Parents tend
to answer the open-ended questions more than the children. The most prevailing comments
about their child since being matched include:

Less shy, more open, seems happier, has someone to confide in, gets excited before
the outing, is doing better in school, gets along better with siblings, seems more
confident, isn’t getting in trouble as much, is more helpful around the house, loves
having his/her Big, talks more
And we measure impact by administering to the child a pre-evaluation immediately before they
are matched with their Mentor and a post-evaluation at the one year mark.

The youth are given 8 statements with the possibility of 5 answers (always, most of the time,
sometimes, rarely and never).
The statements are:
- I like myself
- I am a good person
- What I do or feel is important
- I feel I have someone to talk to
- It is easy for me to talk to someone
- I get along with other people
- I like to participate in activities
- I feel happy
And at the one year mark we include the following statements:
- My big brother/big sister understands me
- I enjoy fun activities with my big brother/big sister
- I like having a big brother or big sister
- I think other kids would like to have a big brother or big sister
Girls:
There is an improvement in all areas however the most significant difference is with regards to
the girls feeling they have someone to talk to. In the pre-evaluation 39% stated they
sometimes feel they have someone to talk to and 61% felt that they always or most of the time
have someone to talk to whereas in the post evaluation 93% of the girls felt that they always or
most of the time have someone to talk to. The average increase from “sometimes” to “most of
the time” and “always” is of 8% for all other statements.
Boys:
The impact on the boys seems greater than that of the girls. As with the girls, the most
significant change is that the boys feel that they now have someone to talk to. At the preevaluation stage, 7% of the boys felt they “rarely” had someone to talk to, 14% reported
“sometimes”, 27% said most of the time and 52% stated always, whereas at the postevaluation stage, only 4% stated sometimes, 8% said most of the time and 88% of the boys
felt that they always have someone to talk to. The average increase from “rarely”,
“sometimes”, “most of the time” and “always” is 15% for all other statements.
All of the youth reported feeling understood by their mentor “always” or “most of the time”.
They all like having a big brother or big sister “always” or “most of the time” and they all enjoy
their activities together. When asked if they think that other kids would like to have a “big”,
16% of the boys stated “sometimes” while 84% of the boys stated “most of the time” or
“always” and 100% of the girls stated “most of the time” and “always”.
Although our current evaluations give us some indication of program impact, we are confident
that BBBSWI will develop more effective methods following the COCO workshops.

“I was matched with my big brother John** in spring 2011. He came with
the caseworker and I was promised we are a good match. First meeting
was a bit awkward but very soon we "clicked" and became friends. He
introduced me to his parents, siblings, cousins and his close friends. I felt
like a member of their family very soon. I have to admit that I have the
best memories thanks to him. I will never forget our trips to Ottawa,
paintball with his buddies and watching games and movies together. We
didn’t meet every week, but when we did - he planned it all. Thanks to
him I got my new friend – my cat Sylvester who changed our lives at
home.
I always felt accepted by John and my family loves him a lot. I believe our
friendship is forever, he changed me a lot. He showed up in my life when i

MENTORAT À L’ÉCOLE
Les Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs de l’Ouest de l’Ile offre le programme de « Mentorat à
l’école » depuis plus de 15 ans. La période de mentorat a lieu pendant les heures de classe
pour une période d’une heure par semaine. Le « Mentor » encourage, soutien et motive
l’enfant en faisant des activités amusantes ensemble comme du bricolage, en jouant à des
jeux, en pratiquant des sports ou en fabriquant un casse-tête. Il est tellement important pour
l’estime d’un enfant qu’il reçoive de l’attention individuelle et malheureusement dans les
classes d’aujourd’hui ceci est de plus en plus difficile. Le Petit recevant l’attention dont il a
besoin a de meilleures chances de développer une attitude favorable envers l’école.

IMPACT:
La rétroaction la plus courante donnée par les enseignants est que les enfants semblent plus
heureux. Ils sont très excités de voir leur mentor et fiers d’en avoir un. Certains enseignants
rapportent que les enfants semblent plus calmes. Tous s’entendent que ces enfants ont un
besoin criant d’attention individuelle et qu’ils l’obtiennent en étant jumelés à un mentor. On
note une demande grandissante des parents pour que la relation entre l’enfant et le mentor se
prolonge après que l’enfant ait complété l’école primaire. Dans ces cas, nous transférons le
jumelage dans notre programme traditionnel.
Je fais partie du programme de mentorat à l’école. Je me sens privilégié de faire
partie de ce programme. En travaillant avec ce petit garçon qui avait besoin de
compagnie, j’ai ressenti non seulement la joie de lui tenir compagnie, mais j’ai
également pu expérimenter un peu le fait d’être un parent ou un enseignant. Plus
important encore, j’ai appris que gâter un enfant n’est pas une façon de l’aimer.
Ce programme m’a permis de ressentir une grande croissance personnelle, puisque
j’ai également grandi en souffrant d’un manque de compagnie. Je chéris mon
temps dans ce programme.

IN-SCHOOL MENTORING
Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Island has been providing an “In-school Mentoring” program
to elementary school children for over 15 years. The In-school mentoring match takes place
during school hours for one hour per week. The Mentor encourages, supports and motivates
the child by doing fun activities together such us crafting, playing games, playing sports, or
piecing a puzzle together. This special one-on-one attention that so many children need but
cannot receive in today’s classrooms helps build self-esteem. The Mentee may develop
greater positive feelings towards their school experience.

IMPACT:
The most common feedback reported by teachers is that the children seem happier. They get very
excited to see their mentor and are proud to have one. Some report that the children seem calmer.
There is a consensus that these children are in dire need of the individual attention that they get
from having a mentor. There is an increasing demand by the parents for the relationship between
their child and the In-School mentor to continue after the child graduates from elementary school.
In those cases we transfer the match to our traditional program.
I am in the in-school mentoring program. I feel very fortunate to be part of the
program. As I work with this little boy who needs company, not only I felt a sense of joy
for providing the company, but also I got to experience a bit how it was like to be a
teacher or parent. Most important of all, I learned that spoiling a child is not loving him.
This program has benefited me a lot in personal growth especially because I grew up
lacking of company as well. I treasure my time in the program.

Malheureusement la réalité veut que nous ne puissions pas offrir à chaque enfant dans le
besoin un Grand de façon constante. C'est avec ceci en tête que nous organisons une activité
à chaque mois. Ceci est pour que nous puissions rester en contact avec les Petits en attente
de façon à ce qu'ils se sentent importants et appréciés. Les jumelages y participent aussi car
ça permets à tous la chance de développer des liens d’amitiés. La sortie donne au personnel
davantage d'occasions de connaître les enfants et nous pouvons aussi augmenter les
chances d'un meilleur jumelage. À chaque mois, il y a entre 10-70 participants.

des gens qui sont dans la même situation que nous. Cela nous donne également l’occasion de participer
à des sorties et des activités que nous ne ferions pas autrement. C’est toujours agréable de profiter de
laissez-passer pour des films pour enfants, d’une sortie au théâtre, de billets pour un événement sportif
en plus des activités mensuelles en groupe. Le mois dernier, nous avons visité le musée de l’aviation, et
nous avons récemment pu profiter d’une sortie culturelle grâce au Ballet de Québec qui nous avait offert
des billets de leur spectacle pour enfants à Montréal, gracieuseté de Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs de
l’ouest de l’île. Nous apprécions toujours l’effort et la créativité qui sont mis à organiser ces événements
ainsi que la générosité des commanditaires qui aident à faire de Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs de
l’ouest de l’île une organisation si exceptionnelle. N’oublions pas l’impact que ces activités ont sur la
perspective et l’état d’esprit des enfants à qui on a offert la possibilité de faire partie de quelque chose où
ils se sentent inclus et considérés à part entière. Merci pour tout et nous attendons avec intérêt les
prochaines activités amusantes et enrichissantes!

J’aimerais avoir un Grand Frère parce que je n’en ai pas. Mon papa est loin loin et il ne reviendra pas, et
Maman ne sais pas bien faire des activités de garçons. Si j’avais un Grand Frère, je pourrais faire
beaucoup de choses amusantes et il pourrait m’enseigner des choses que les filles ne connaissent pas.
Un Grand Frère pourrait faire des choses géniales et formidables, et il pourrait jouer avec mes jouets et il
pourrait m’aider à faire mes devoirs. Et il pourrait m’aimer et je l’aimerais encore plus, mais pas autant
que ma mère. Un Grand Frère serait génial pour jouer et nous pourrions avoir beaucoup de plaisir
ensemble. Un Grand Frère pourrait m’aider à lire mes livres et à aller à la bibliothèque et peut-être me
montrer comment faire une tour avec mes Lego! Peut-être qu’il ferait des sciences avec moi et qu’il
pourrait m’enseigner à faire de la planche à roulettes. J’aimerais vraiment avoir un Grand Frère, car je
n’ai pas beaucoup d’amis avec qui faire des choses et parfois ma mère ne peut pas. Je pense qu’un
Grand Frère pourrait m’emmener au parc et chez McDonald’s et faire de la planche à neige aussi! Il faut
que je me trouve une planche à roulettes et une planche à neige pour qu’il puisse faire cela aussi. Peutêtre qu’il pourrait me montrer des trucs à faire avec un yoyo! Ce serait tellement génial! Nous pourrions
même créer une poignée de main secrète que seulement nous connaîtrions! Nous serions des amis pour

One of the unfortunate realities that we must deal with is not being able to provide every child
in need with a “Big” for an extended period of time. It was with that in mind that BBBSWI
created its free monthly fun days program. The program is designed to maintain contact with
our “Littles” in waiting as well as our matches. It gives the BBBSWI staff more opportunities to
get to know the children thus increasing the chances of optimal matches. It lets matches and
children waiting to be matched get to know one other and develop new friendships. Each
month, there’s an attendance of between 10-70 participants.

So I'd just like to take a minute of time to let everyone know how much my son and I enjoy the monthly activities the Big
Brothers Big Sisters of West Island provide for us. It's a great way to build friendships and explore new adventures and
have new experiences and meet new people that may be in the same situation we are. It also gives us an opportunity to
participate in events and outings and special activities that we possibly would not be able to take part in other wise. It's
always great to be able to get movie passes for children's movies, for an outing to the theater as well as tickets to the local
sporting events in addition to all the monthly activities where we attend as a group. Last month we got to visit the aviation
museum and we also recently enjoyed a cultural event at the school of Ballet of Quebec in Montreal that offered us tickets
to their children's show courtesy of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Island. We always appreciate the creativity and
effort that goes into planning these events as well as the generosity of the sponsors that help make the BBBS of WI such
a great organization. We all mustn't forget the impact these activities have on the minds and outlook of all the children
that have been afforded the opportunity to be a part of something that makes them feel included and valuable as
individual people. Thanks for everything and we look forward to many more fun and enriching activities in the future!
I would like a big brother because I don't have one. My dad is far far away and not coming back and my mom can't do
boy stuff good. If I had a big brother I could do lots of fun stuff and he could teach me stuff that girls don't know about.
A big brother could do cool stuff and awesome stuff and he could play with my toys and he could help me do my
homework. And he could love me and I will love him the most, but my mom is better. A big brother would be awesome
at playing and we would have a lot of fun together. A big brother could help me read my books and go to the library
and maybe teach me how to make a tower with my lego! Maybe he would do science with me and he could teach me
how to skateboard. I would really like to have a big brother because I don’t have a lot of people to do stuff with and
sometimes my mom can’t. I think a big brother might take me to parks and McDonalds and snowboarding too! I have
to get a skate board and snow board so he can do that stuff. Maybe he could teach me to do tricks with a yoyo! That
would be so cool! We could even make a secret hand shake that only he we would know! We would be friends forever! I
would really like a big brother.

GO LES FILLES! - À VOS MARQUES!
Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs de l'Ouest de l'Ile offre les programmes suivants : Go les filles!
et À vos marques! aux écoles primaires de l'ouest de l'île. Les programmes, l'un pour les filles
et l'autre pour les garçons sont conçus pour augmenter l'estime de soi et la confiance en soi
tout en encourageant un mode de vie sain. Ces programmes ont été faits sur mesure afin de
répondre aux besoins et aux circonstances de la jeunesse d'aujourd'hui.
GFGSOI a rencontré plusieurs difficultés à fournir ce programme dans les écoles et à la
communauté : des programmes semblables sont déjà offerts, un manque d’espace et de
temps dans les écoles ainsi qu’une forte diminution de la demande. Il a donc été décidé de
renoncer à ce programme pour l’instant.

GO GIRLS! – GAME ON!
Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Island offers both Go Girls! and Game On! programs to
elementary schools in the west island. The programs, one for girls and one for boys, are
designed to increase self-confidence and self-esteem while promoting healthy living. The
programs have been tailored to meet the needs of today’s youth and circumstance.
BBBSWI faced many challenges providing this program to the schools and to the community:
similar programs already being offered, lack of space, lack of time from the schools and a
significant decrease in the demand. As such, it has been decided that we discontinue the
program for the time-being.

Être une Grande Sœur m’a apporté tellement plus que ce que j’aurais pu imaginer. Cela m’a donné
l’occasion de redevenir une enfant et d’essayer des activités amusantes que je ne ferais normalement
pas à mon âge. Cela m’a donné l’occasion de voir une jeune fille exceptionnelle devenir une jeune
femme encore plus exceptionnelle. J’ai eu la chance de la voir grandir et d’y contribuer un peu. Ma Petite
Sœur m’a aidé à grandir plus que je ne l’aurais jamais imaginé et même plus que moi je l’ai aidée à
grandir. Être une Grande Sœur est une source de joie et de fierté qui façonne ma personnalité. Je ne
pourrais jamais imaginer ma vie sans cette organisation, ma Petite et sa famille.

Being a Big Sister has brought so much more than I could ever dream. It has given me the chance to be
a kid again and try fun activities that I wouldn't normally do at my age. It has given me the opportunity to

Connaissant à ce stade le bénévole et les jeunes qui attendent d'être jumelés, le
travailleur social discute d'un jumelage potentiel avec le bénévole, l'enfant ou le jeune

bénévole, et souvent le parent ou le tuteur

Mon nom est Jennifer**, ma Grande Sœur s’appelle Rebecca. Rebecca et moi avons été jumelées
lorsque j’étais en troisième année. Nous sommes ensemble depuis ce temps et cette année nous avons
débuté le programme traditionnel. Je préfère vraiment le programme traditionnel à l’autre programme
parce qu’il nous donne plus la liberté de faire ce que nous aimons. Par exemple, l’année dernière, nous
devions rester à l’école mais maintenant nous pouvons aller à des endroits comme le musée des
sciences. Rebecca peut même venir chez moi. Je crois que ce programme est un très bon programme
car, avant de rencontrer Rebecca, je me sentais très seule, je n’avais pas beaucoup d’amies, alors
Rebecca m’a vraiment beaucoup aidée. Même quand j’avais des problèmes, cela m’aidait vraiment de
parler de mon problème avec elle. Je crois que Rebecca et moi sommes un bon jumelage car nous avons
beaucoup de points en commun, par exemple nous aimons toutes les deux Taylor Swift et nous sommes
allées toutes les deux voir le spectacle de Hedley. Nous aimons toutes les deux l’art et la semaine
dernière nous avons créé des tableaux de visualisation (un tableau de choses que l’on veut faire dans le
futur) et c’était vraiment amusant. Mon voyage préféré que j’ai fait avec Rebecca est le musée des
sciences parce que j’adore les sciences, particulièrement la chimie, et parce que c’était vraiment amusant
et intéressant. Je recommanderais ce programme parce que c’est vraiment un programme extraordinaire
pour les enfants.

THE PROCESS
The Application and Assessment Process
The following is a general overview of the process. The volunteer applicant:
 Submits a written application
 Submits a police record check and three references
 Participates in a one-to-one interview with a staff member at the Big Brothers Big
Sisters agency
 Depending on the program, may be asked to participate in an assessment of their
home environment
 Successfully completes an orientation and child safety training
 Is notified of their acceptance/non-acceptance
 If accepted as a volunteer mentor, signs an agreement of confidentiality
The Matching Process



The caseworker, now familiar with the volunteer and the youth waiting to be matched,
discusses a potential match with the volunteer, the child or youth, and, depending on
the program, with the family
The caseworker arranges for a meeting between the child or youth, the volunteer
mentor, and often the parent or guardian
If everyone agrees, the match can begin!
My name is Jennifer**, my big sister’s name is Rebecca**. Rebecca and I got paired when I was in third grade, I have been
with her ever since and just this year we started the traditional program. I really like the traditional program better than
the other program because we have more freedom to do things we liked. For example last year we had to stay within the
school area but now we can go to places like the science museum. Rebecca can even come to my house. I think this
program is a very good program because before I meet Rebecca I was very lonely and at the time I didn’t have a lot of
friends, so Rebecca really helped me. Even when I had problems she would really help me by talk about the problem. I
think Rebecca and I are a very good match because we have a lot in common, for example we both really like Taylor
Swift and we both went to the Hedley concert. We both like art and even last week we made vision boards (a board of
things you want to do in the future) and it was really fun. My favorite trip I had with Rebecca was the science museum
because I love and adore science in particular chemistry and because it was really fun and interesting. I would recommend
this program because it’s really just an amazing program for kids.

J’aimerais remercier Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs d’avoir donné à Peter** la chance de participer à l’atelier d’un jour Old Navy.
Merci également à Old Navy. Peter a passé une journée extraordinaire et est revenu à la maison en racontant tout ce qu’il
avait fait avec ses nouveaux amis. En plus de lui procurer beaucoup de plaisir, vous lui avez permis de faire partie d’un
environnement de travail malgré son handicap. Cela lui a apporté un sentiment de fierté et d’accomplissement. Un gros merci
également à sa travailleuse sociale qui a pris Peter sous son aile avant et après l’événement. Maman devait travailler et c’était
de rassurant de savoir qu’il était entre bonnes mains.
I want to thank BBBS organization for giving the Peter** the opportunity to participate at the Old Navy "work" day. Thank
you to Old Navy as well. Peter had an amazing day and came home full of stories about the things he did and the friends he
made. Aside from the fun he had, you gave him the opportunity to participate in a work environment despite his handicap. It
gave him a sense of accomplishment and pride. A very big thank you to his caseworker as well for taking Peter under her wing
before and after the event. Mom had to work and it was nice knowing that he was in safe hands.
