Good morning!
Let me introduce myself, my name is Florian Mayer. I will talk to you about basketball. I like
this sport because it is a team sport, it is popular all over the world and you can play it all year.
My presentation about basketball has three main parts.
First, I want to talk about how this sport started.
In 1891 Dr James Naismith, a teacher in the USA, tried to find a game for his class to play
inside on in winter. He wrote the first rules. The game quickly became popular at schools and
universities in the USA and in Canada. In 1946, the Basketball Association of America was
formed.
My second part is about how the game is played.
Usually games are played in parts of 10 or 12 minutes. The time that is counted is the actual
playing time. This means that the clock is stopped while the play is not active. That’s why a
game can take much longer than the game time.
The equipment in a basketball game is the ball and the court with baskets at each end. Five
players from each team may be on the court at the same time.
The two teams must try to throw the ball into the other team’s basket. They can shoot, throw,
roll or “dribble” the ball – dribbling means bouncing the ball while running. There are many
rules, but I don’t want to talk about them in detail.
My last part is about the stars in this sport. Famous teams are the Boston Celtics, the Los
Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls. One of the most famous players is Michael Jordan. He
had a great career. He won many gold medals with his teams. He played his last game in
2003. Now he is a businessman.
I am now at the end of my presentation about basketball. In my first part I talked about where
and when the sport started, in the second part how it is played and the last part was about
basketball stars.
I think this sport is great because it is a team sport, it is popular all over the world, you can play
it all year and it is great fun.
Thank you for listening. I hope you liked my presentation. If you have any questions please
ask me now.
