‘In the Interim’ is a series of London based exhibitions hosted by Amsterdam gallery
ZINGERpresents, prior to moving into its new Amsterdam exhibition space. From its
temporary pop-up location at 92 Hoxton Street, London, the gallery will be hosting a cycle of
three exhibitions. The series commences with ‘A show about things that are there because
they are not there, like a shadow or like death’ by London based German artist Markus Vater.
To illustrate the parameters of his practice and to divulge the much-needed key to unlock the
simultaneously courteous as well as rebellious universe behind the objects that conjure up this
multi-facetted installation for this exhibition the artist says the following;
‘The fact that the growth of an embryo is much more about precise negation than precise
creation was ignored by the artist. He made things. The conditions of the making stayed
unclear. He had bought a cd which was lying on a table. It had the title " Shakin Stevens :
Listen now" . Beside the cd lay a remote control. A bit of stardust was sticking to its rubber
buttons. It was made in Korea. The young man who had assembled it, rested his hand on the
warm tank of a motorbike and observed how the moon disappeared behind a building. The
building had given an architect nightmares for more than two weeks. In his dreams the
architect stood on a wooden plank that vibrated like an electric toothbrush. The plank was
looming over a very still abyss. It was obvious that you couldn't compare dream wood with
wake wood, thought the architect and pushed his hand beneath his cushion. The cushion was
filled with feathers of a goose, which had been served at a Christmas dinner where nobody
had spoken a word. The reasons for this speechlessness were lying far back and originated in
the suicide of the mother, which had been kept secret for years.’ (M.V.)
‘A show about things that are there because they are not there, like a shadow or like death’ is
the long awaited solo presentation of Markus Vater’s work in London. Vater has extensively
exhibited throughout Europe, recent solo shows were at Museum Baden, Willhelm Hack
Museum Ludwigshafen and Sies + Hoke, Dusseldorf. Work by the artist is included in ‘Rank:
picturing the social order 1516-2009’ curated by Alistair Robinson currently at the Northern
Gallery for Contemporary Art and touring..

Manon Braat | Steven van Grinsven runt sinds drie jaar galerie ZINGERpresents in de Amsterdamse Pijp. Op het moment
staat de ruimte aan de Gerard Doustraat echter leeg en zit Van Grinsven in Londen.
MB: Wat doe je in Londen?
SvG: Door onoplosbare vochtproblemen in de Amsterdamse galerie, waren we min of meer gelukkig gedwongen om op
creatieve wijze te kijken hoe we vooruit konden. De oplossing werd eigenlijk aangedragen door een mailtje van Matthew
Slotover, directeur van Frieze, over een tijdelijke galerieruimte in Londen. Zo konden we direct weer tentoonstellingen
maken, wat ik erg had gemist. Bovendien is Londen een plaats waar het discours omtrent kunst een meer centrale rol speelt
dan in Nederland en een breder draagvlak geniet. Dat is inspirerend en daagt je uit je te concentreren op het grotere geheel
zonder daarin je eigen positie te verliezen.
MB: Wat zijn de belangrijkste verschillen tussen Amsterdam en Londen met betrekking tot de galeriescene?
SvG: In Nederland zijn er misschien tien galeries die internationaal meekunnen, hier heb je daar een veelvoud van. Dat
dwingt je scherp te blijven en actief deel te nemen aan het debat dat hier constant wordt gevoerd. Amsterdam is een prettig
warm bad maar je moet ervoor waken dat je niet indommelt. Verder is er hier natuurlijk meer aanbod en ook een andere
standaard van kunst. Zo bezocht ik laatst openingen van David Claerbout, Matthew Monahan en Wolfgang Tillmans, op één
avond! Dat zou in Nederland ondenkbaar zijn. In augustus openen we een tentoonstelling van Marijn van Kreij, een voor
Nederlandse begrippen belangrijke internationaal opererende kunstenaar. Hier staat hij pas aan het begin van zijn carrière,
vergeleken met kunstenaars zoals bijvoorbeeld Louise Bourgeois of Paul McCarthy, die na de zomer ook het spits afbijten
voor hun galeries hier. Maar we knokken allemaal even hard om de aandacht van de verzamelaars en curatoren. Dat verlegt
de lat voor zowel galerie als kunstenaar.
MB: Wat is je huidige tentoonstelling?
SvG: Een groepstentoonstelling die ik zelf heb samengesteld, met werk van Mike Cooter, Dan Rees, Matthieu Laurette,
Young Hae Chang – Heavy Industries, Sven Johne en de Nederlander Martijn in ’t Veld. Ik weet dat het ongebruikelijk is om
als galeriehouder op de stoel van curator te gaan zitten, maar vanwege de bijzondere situatie mocht ik er van mezelf een
keertje aan toegeven. De tentoonstelling bevraagt de rol van de kunstenaar als maker, aangezien in elk van de getoonde
werken een andere partij betrokken was bij het tot stand komen van het werk. Daarbij speelt de mobiliteit van gedachten een
belangrijke rol: het idee ontstaat op een bepaalde geografische plek maar wordt pas tastbaar op een andere. Het concept voor
de tentoonstelling is geïnspireerd op de Mail Art-traditie maar houdt daar niet op.
MB: Heb je al een nieuwe plek in Amsterdam?
SvG: Begin september betrekken we onze nieuwe locatie aan de Gerard Doustraat 154, een paar deuren naast de oude
galerie. We openen met nieuw teken- en videowerk van de Engels-Nederlandse Julie Verhoeven. En dat maakt de cirkel
rond, nu ik er zo over nadenk.
