The total cultivated surface areas (open fields, market gardening, greenhouses)
represent in France 300 000 ha, including 5 000 ha in greenhouses.
The French fresh vegetable production, excluding potatoes, amounted to
6.2 million tons in 2005, which makes France the 3rd largest producer in the
European Union, behind Italy and Spain. The main crops are:
• Tomatoes : 855 000 tons, 22e worldwide position
