commitment to its members
Die FGU (Fachgruppe für Untertagbau) im Engagement seiner Mitglieder
The STS is actively involved in all questions related to underground construction: geology, civil
engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical
and ventilation systems and safety engineering,
both during the planning phases as well as during
construction.
Die FGU befasst sich mit allen Fragen im Zusammenhang mit unterirdischen Bauten: Geologie, Ingenieurwesen, Maschinenbau, Elektro- und
Lüftungstechnik und Sicherheitstechnik, sowohl
während der Planung als auch während der Bauphase.
Primary tasks of the STS
According to its statutes, the STS pursues the
following main tasks:

Gemäss Statuten, verfolgt die FGU die folgenden

1. Promotion and dissemination of knowledge
and expertise in underground construction by
organising events such as seminars, visits
and congresses.
2. Distribution and promotion of progress in
underground construction through the support of research activities.
3. Dissemination of technical information on the
execution of underground structures in Switzerland.
4. Collaboration in the establishment of new
standards and documenting new standards
for the underground construction industry.
5. Exchange of information with specialists in
other countries, especially in connection with
the ITA and other national and international
organisations.
1. Verbreitung und Förderung des Wissens und
der Fachkenntnisse im Untertagbau durch
die Organisation von Veranstaltungen wie
Studientagungen, Kongresse und Besichtigungen.
2. Verbreitung und Förderung des Fortschrittes
im Untertagbau durch Unterstützung von
Forschungstätigkeiten.
3. Verbreitung von technischen Informationen
über die Ausführung von Untertagbauten in
der Schweiz.
4. Mitarbeit beim Schreiben neuer Standards
und der Aufstellung von Normen für den Untertagbau.

The committee’s frequent contact with the majority of its members ensures that the activities of
the association meet the specific interests and
fulfil the expectations of its members.
Finally, the STS endeavours to make the knowledge and experience of the Swiss tunnel construction industry known at national and international levels. The STS is also committed to the
improvement of the tunnelling engineering profession, not only in the public's estimation, but
also by encouraging more young people to undertake civil engineering studies.
Durch die häufigen Kontakte des Vorstandes mit
der Mehrheit der Mitglieder wird gewährleistet,
dass die Aktivitäten des Vereins die konkreten
Interessen und Erwartungen seiner Mitglieder
erfüllen.
Die FGU ist bemüht, die Kompetenz und die Erfahrungen der Schweizer Tunnelbauindustrie auf
nationaler und internationaler Ebene bekannt zu
machen und engagiert sich an der Verbesserung
des Images der Tunnelbau-Berufe, nicht nur in
der Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch zur Förderung
des Nachwuchses.

International Tunnelling and
Underground Space Association (ITA)
Founded in 1974 through the initiative of nineteen
nations, its aims are:
• to encourage the use of the subsurface for
the benefit of the public, the environment and
sustainable development and
• to promote advances in planning, design,
construction, maintenance and safety of tunnels and underground space, by bringing together information thereon and by studying
questions related thereto.
Members
Since then, ITA has developed considerably. Any
independent nation may, through the medium of
a National Organisation, become an ITA “Member Nation”. Presently, ITA gathers 55 Member
Nations.
Corporations and individuals (as far as they fulfill
the conditions) can participate in the activities of
the Association by becoming an “Affiliate Member”. ITA gathers 280 Corporate or Individual Affiliate Members.
The General Assembly, which meets annually,
resolves all questions concerning the organisation and conduct of the affairs of the Association;
it shall approve the budget of receipts and expenditures and appoint and organise all Committees of the Association; it shall decide on the admission of new adhering National Organisations
and of new Affiliate Members.
The General Assembly is host by a Member Nation at the occasion of the yearly World Tunnel
Congress.

To encourage the development of better and
cheaper methods for planning, geoinvestigation, design, construction, operation,
maintenance and safety of underground
structures by using improved methods such
as new technical developments and risk
management principles.
To improve training for everyone, especially
young professionals, by conducting workshops, by improving and coordinating academic programs worldwide, and through improved on-the-job training.
To bring together engineers, owners and
others involved in the development of underground space, such as architects, planners,
authorities, economists, lawyers, insurers, financiers and politicians.
To arrange international exchange on developments in underground technology and experience from its use.
Means
To reach its objectives, ITA has set up international working groups (WG) to study and report
on specific topics. Today, 12 working groups are
active.

life-cycle costs and savings as well as social

Die Internationale Tunnelvereinigung
ITA (International Tunnelling and
Underground Space Association)
Die ITA wurde im Jahr 1974 durch die Initiative
von 19 Nationen gegründet. Ihre erklärten Ziele
sind:
• Ausbau des Untertagbaus zum Nutzen der
Öffentlichkeit, der Umwelt und der nachhaltigen Entwicklung, und
• Förderung des Fortschritts in den Bereichen
Planung, Gestaltung, Bau, Wartung und Sicherheit in Tunneln und Untergrundraum
durch Zusammenführung der entsprechenden Informationen und Bearbeitung themenbezogener Fragen.
Mitglieder
Die ITA hat sich seit ihrer Gründung in vielen Bereichen enorm weiterentwickelt. Über eine Nationale Organisation kann jede unabhängige Nation
ein „Mitgliedsstaat“ der ITA werden. Aktuell gehören der ITA 55 Mitgliedsstaaten an.
Sowohl Unternehmen als auch Einzelpersonen
können (soweit die Mitgliedsbestimmungen erfüllt
sind) an den Aktivitäten der Vereinigung teilnehmen, indem sie «Affiliate Member» (Angeschlossenes Mitglied) werden. Aktuell umfasst die ITA
280 Angeschlossene Mitglieder als Unternehmen
oder Einzelpersonen.
Die Generalversammlung kommt jährlich zusammen und klärt alle Fragen zu Organisation
und Geschäftsführung der Vereinigung; sie verabschiedet das Einnahmen- und Ausgabenbudget und ernennt und organisiert alle Komitees der
Organisation; sie entscheidet über die Aufnahme
nationaler Organisationen und neuer «Affiliate

Beim jährlichen Welt-Tunnelkongress ist die Generalversammlung zu Gast bei einer der Mitgliedsstaaten.

Umsetzung
Die ITA hat zum Erreichen ihrer Ziele internationale Arbeitsgruppen (AG) eingerichtet, in denen
spezielle Themen untersucht und Berichte dazu
erstellt werden. Zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt sind 12
Arbeitsgruppen aktiv.
Die ITA hat gerade 3 Komitees eingerichtet:

In Kurzfassung beinhalten einige der aktuellen
Ziele der ITA die folgenden Punkte:

Förderung neuer Verwendungsmöglichkeiten
von Untergrundraum zum Nutzen der Öffentlichkeit, der Umwelt und der nachhaltigen
Entwicklung.
Förderung von Studien zu Alternativen im
Untertagebau bis hin zu Übertagebau, die
nicht nur die Baukosten berücksichtigen,
sondern auch die indirekten Kosten des Lebenszyklus und die Einsparungen sowie die
sozialen und umweltrelevanten Vorteile.
Anregung zur Entwicklung von strategischen
Richtlinien zur positiven Öffentlichkeitsarbeit,
sodass die Bereitschaft zur Nutzung der Vorteile des Untertagebaus gefördert wird.
Förderung der Entwicklung besserer und
günstigerer Methoden für Planung, geologische Untersuchungen, Gestaltung, Bau, Betrieb und Wartung und Sicherheit von Felsbauwerken durch Verwendung fortschrittlicher Verfahren, wie zum Beispiel neuer
technischer Entwicklungen und Prinzipien für
Risiko-Management.
Verbesserung des allgemeinen Schulungsangebots, insbesondere für Berufsanfänger,
durch Veranstaltung von Workshops, die
Verbesserung und Koordinierung weltweiter
akademischer Programme und gezielterer
betrieblicher Ausbildung.
Zusammenführung von Ingenieuren, Eigentümern und anderen Personen, die sich mit
der Entwicklung von Untergrundraum beschäftigen, wie Architekten, Planer, Behörden, Wirtschaftswissenschaftler, Rechtsanwälte, Versicherungsgesellschaften, Kapitalgeber und Politiker.

The World Tunnel Congress 2013 was an all around success
“Underground – the way to the future” was the motto for the WTC 2013 and the 39th General Assembly of the “International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association”, which
both took place from 31 May to 7 June. The events were hosted by the Swiss Tunnelling
Society (STS) in the beautiful city of Geneva. More than 100 exhibitors were present on
three storeys. The congress was opened by the Swiss Federal Councillor, Doris Leuthard.
An intensive and multifaceted programme
The organising committee of the WTC 2013 demonstrated a great deal of commitment and
creativity towards the goal of making the World Tunnel Congress 2013 an outstanding success in many respects. In addition to traditional elements such as the ITA CET training
course (this year dealing with the topic of auxiliary construction measures), a number of
new events were launched as well. For example, there was a presentation forum for the
newest products, innovative applications and interesting case studies within the context of
the exhibition and a special session for Swiss tunnel engineering students. With this special
session, the organisers set an example for a stronger commitment to the promotion of the
upcoming generation. The Swiss Tunnel Congress, which takes place yearly, was also integrated into the programme as the “Swiss Session”. A main focus of this event was provided
by the experience gained in the construction of the two base tunnels, Lötschberg and Gotthard through the Alps.
Two technical events of the ITA Technical Committee were a total innovation. The first was
the very practical deminar on 31 May in the Hagerbach Test Gallery on the topic of “Sprayable Tunnel Sealing Membranes”, which generated enthusiasm among the visitors. The second was the presentation of the guidelines developed by the Activity Groups of ITAtech at
the “ITA tech Innovation Forum”.
Memorable events and technical excursions
A good deal of effort was also put into all other non-technical areas of the World Tunnel
Congress 2013. The reception took place against the one-of-a-kind backdrop of the Ariana
and the traditional banquet on Wednesday evening was held aboard three large steamships
on Lake Geneva. The special ambience of these ships, maintained in original condition from
the “Belle Epoque”, together with the incomparable landscape of Lake Geneva provided a
worthy context for this exceptional occasion.
Various technical excursions after the WTC 2013 took congress participants to impressive
tunnel construction sites, but also to the most enticingly picturesque scenic areas of Switzerland as well as to interesting manufacturing companies in which typical Swiss products
such as clocks, cheese and chocolate are made.

Rundum erfolgreicher World Tunnel Congress 2013
Vom 31. Mai bis 7. Juni fanden unter dem Motto «Underground – the way to the future» der
WTC 2013 sowie die 39. Generalversammlung der «International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association» statt. Gastgeberin war die Schweizer Fachgruppe für Untertagbau (FGU) in der schönen Stadt Genf. Auf drei Etagen waren über 100 Aussteller anwesend. Eröffnet würde der Kongress von der Schweizer Bundesrätin Doris Leuthard.
Abwechslungsreiches und intensives Programm
Das Organisationskomitee des WTC 2013 hatte sehr viel Engagement und Kreativität gezeigt, um den World Tunnel Congress 2013 in vielerlei Hinsicht zu einem herausragenden
Erlebnis zu machen. Neben traditionellen Elementen wie dem ITA CET Trainingskurs (dieses Jahr zum Thema Bauhilfsmassnahmen) wurden zusätzlich mehrere Veranstaltungen
neu lanciert. So zum Beispiel ein Präsentationsforum neuster Produkte, innovativer Anwendungen und interessanter Fallstudien innerhalb der Ausstellung oder eine spezielle Session
für Schweizer Tunnelbau-Studenten. Die Organisatoren setzten mit dieser Sondersession
ein Zeichen für ein stärkeres Engagement zugunsten der Nachwuchsförderung. Ebenfalls
ins Programm integriert wurde der jährlich stattfindende Schweizer Tunnelkongress als
«Swiss Session». Einen Schwerpunkt bildeten dabei die Erfahrungen, die man beim Bau
der beiden Basistunnels Lötschberg und Gotthard durch die Alpen gemacht hatte.
Eine absolute Neuheit waren die zwei technischen Events des ITA tech-Komitees. Zum einen begeisterte die Besucher das praxisnahe sogenannte Deminar am 31. Mai im Versuchsstollen Hagerbach zum Thema «Spritzbare Tunnelabdichtungen». Zum anderen wurden am «ITA tech Innovation Forum» die von den Activity Groups der ITAtech erarbeiteten
Richtlinien vorgestellt.
Eindrückliche Events und technische Exkursionen
Ebenfalls viel Aufmerksamkeit wurde allen anderen, nicht technischen Bereichen des World
Tunnel Congress 2013 gewidmet. Der Empfang fand vor der einzigartigen Kulisse des Musée Ariana statt, das traditionelle Bankett am Mittwochabend auf drei grossen Dampfschiffen auf dem Genfersee. Das spezielle Ambiente dieser originalgetreu bewahrten Dampfschiffe aus der «Belle Epoque» und die grossartige Landschaft des Genfersees bildeten
einen würdigen Rahmen für diesen aussergewöhnlichen Anlass.
Verschiedene technische Exkursionen nach dem WTC 2013 führten die KongressTeilnehmer zu beeindruckenden Tunnelbaustellen, aber auch zu den landschaftlich reizvollsten Zielen der Schweiz sowie zu interessanten Fabrikationsbetrieben, in denen typische
Schweizer Produkte wie Uhren, Käse und Schokolade hergestellt werden.
