They stretch for about 80 km downstream from Kingston, Ontario. The 1,864 islands range in size from over 100 km2 to smaller islands occupied by a single residence, or uninhabited outcroppings of rocks that are only home to migratory waterfowl. The region was a part of the War of 1812 between the British Empire and the United States. Many sites from the war still can be found such as Fort Wellington in Prescott and the Garrison on Chimney Island, Mallorytown along the 1000 Islands Parkway. Some masonry "castles" remain as international landmarks. The most famous extant examples are "The Towers" on Dark Island, now called Singer Castle, and Boldt Castle on Heart Island. 8 Of course, no visit to Brockville would be complete without a cruise of the world famous 1000 Islands. Departing from Block House Island in the City’s historic downtown, 1000 Islands & Seaway Cruises operates a fleet of boats offering a close-up view of the Islands. Choose from a variety of traditional sightseeing, dining and entertainment cruises or get your motor running aboard the Islands’ only high-speed passenger boat, the ‘WildCat’ – safe, family fun; an adventure for all ages. 1000islandscruises.com 1.888.251.7676 | brockvilletourism.com 9 Rockport CRUISES CIRCA 1954 Discover and experience the “Heart of the 1000 Islands”, majestic castles and the lush landscape as you cruise the breathtaking 1000 Islands. Starting at the eastern end, Centeen Park is a popular park for swimming and picnicking and is also a favourite entry point for scuba divers. An underwater sculpture park is featured offshore of the park in the St. Lawrence River. Heading west along the trail you will pass Canada’s Oldest Railway Tunnel and take stroll along the riverwalk on Blockhouse Island (page 6). Leaving Blockhouse Island, the trail will take you past Brockville’s newest attraction, The Aquatarium (see inside front cover), be sure to stop in and see what’s new. Continue along the waterfront to Hardy Park, the site of many summertime events including Brockville Ribfest, Brockville Movies in the Park, and Sunday Concerts in the Park, and keep an eye out for plaques with historical facts and points of interest. At the western edge of the downtown core, the Brock Trail will take you to Brockville’s Rotary Park. With a 400 m2 splash pad, a playground, skate park, basketball court, and brand new bicycle pump track, Rotary Park is ideal for youth and families to stop and play.
