he Aquatarium is more than just an
aquarium. This learning center offers a
full range of interactive exhibits and activities
for the entire family.
L
THE OTTER EXPERIENCE
Our furry little friends invite you to take a
step out of the ordinary and explore the 1000
Islands from their point of view. These friendly
water pups will keep you captivated as they
swim and play throughout the massive glassenclosed river habitat.
THE AQUARIA
The Aquaria is a gateway to the underwater
world with hands-on learning and
exploration. The fish tanks at the Aquatarium
showcases three distinct aquarium habitats in
the St. Lawrence River; lake, river and shore
each with its own unique ecosystem.
L'AQUARIA
THE ROPES COURSE
Climb across the rigging of our two ships,
the SS Kingston and the HMS Ontario, before
walking to the edge of the deck. Take the
40-foot plunge down to the ground floor, or
take a comfortable slide off the SS Kingston.
There’s even a mini ropes course and scramble
net for the littlest explorers.
LEARN AND DISCOVER
Get a close look at the invertebrates that live
in the waters of the 1000 Islands, or put your
learning into action at the water table, where
you’ll do real experiments that illustrate the
power of the St. Lawrence River.

Saint-Laurent.

The 1000 Islands
Les Mille-Îles
Boat Cruising in the
World Famous 1000 Islands
Croisiére Dans Les Mille-Îlles, Connues Mondialement
T
he 1000 Islands constitute an
archipelago of 1,864 islands that
straddles the Canada-U.S. border in the
St. Lawrence River as it emerges from the
northeast corner of Lake Ontario. They
stretch for about 80 km downstream
from Kingston, Ontario. The 1,864 islands
range in size from over 100 km2 to smaller
islands occupied by a single residence, or
uninhabited outcroppings of rocks that
are only home to migratory waterfowl. The
region was a part of the War of 1812 between
the British Empire and the United States.
Many sites from the war still can be found
such as Fort Wellington in Prescott and the
Garrison on Chimney Island, Mallorytown
along the 1000 Islands Parkway. Some
masonry "castles" remain as international
landmarks. The most famous extant
examples are "The Towers" on Dark Island,
now called Singer Castle, and Boldt Castle on
Heart Island.
8
Of course, no visit to Brockville would be
complete without a cruise of the world
famous 1000 Islands. Departing from Block
House Island in the City’s historic downtown,
1000 Islands & Seaway Cruises operates a
fleet of boats offering a close-up view of the
Islands. Choose from a variety of traditional
sightseeing, dining and entertainment cruises
or get your motor running aboard the Islands’
only high-speed passenger boat, the ‘WildCat’
– safe, family fun; an adventure for all ages.
L
es Mille-Îles sont constituées de 1864 îles à
cheval entre la frontière Canada-ÉtatsUnis
dans le Fleuve Saint-Laurent qui s'écoule
de l'extrémité nord-est du lac Ontario. Elles
Quelques
bateau à haute vitesse des îles, le « WildCat »;

glimpse into the social and industrial
history of Ontario’s first incorporated town.
Through a variety of thematic and interpretive
displays the Brockville Museum shares the

riverfront community for over 200 years.

he unique feature of Fulford Place is the
depth of its artifact collection. Many
historic sites have reproductions or have
artifacts that are from the same period of
time but not from the actual site. The sizable
Fulford collection of original artifacts allows
for special exhibitions. This year’s special
exhibition entitled Elegance Recalled features
many objects that capture the luxurious
lifestyle George Fulford’s fortune afforded
the family. Today many of those items are no
longer part of everyday life. This exhibition
celebrates the beauty and fine craftsmanship
of the artifacts. Explore the cases to learn
about intriguing items such as slop bowls,
smelling salts, pushers and studs.

The Brock Trail
La piste Brock
photo: Stephanie Dunbar
T
he Brock Trail is a paved walking and
cycling path that runs along Brockville’s
waterfront, extends west to St. Lawrence Park,
and continues up through town to the north
side of the 401 highway.
Starting at the eastern end, Centeen Park is a
popular park for swimming and picnicking and
is also a favourite entry point for scuba divers.
An underwater sculpture park is featured
offshore of the park in the St. Lawrence River.
Heading west along the trail you will pass
Canada’s Oldest Railway Tunnel and take
stroll along the riverwalk on Blockhouse
Island (page 6). Leaving Blockhouse Island,
the trail will take you past Brockville’s newest
attraction, The Aquatarium (see inside front
cover), be sure to stop in and see what’s new.
Continue along the waterfront to Hardy Park,
the site of many summertime events including
Brockville Ribfest, Brockville Movies in the Park,
and Sunday Concerts in the Park, and keep an
eye out for plaques with historical facts and
points of interest.
At the western edge of the downtown core, the
Brock Trail will take you to Brockville’s Rotary
Park. With a 400 m2 splash pad, a playground,
skate park, basketball court, and brand new
bicycle pump track, Rotary Park is ideal for
youth and families to stop and play.
A new section of the Brock Trail extends the
existing trail all the way west to St. Lawrence
24
Park, a scenic and relaxing place to camp,
picnic, and spend time at the beach. Day
use of the park is free, while there is a fee to
camp overnight. St. Lawrence Park is also
the departure point for the popular Island

L

rockville and the 1000 Islands region
has gained critical acclaim as being the
"World's Best Fresh Water Scuba Diving"
destination. Often referred to as the
Caribbean of the north, the water here is
fresh and clear. No need to rinse tanks off
after diving here. Part of the attraction to
this site is the water clarity and that there is
no thermocline. This unique and rewarding
diving experience offers exploration of
century old shipwrecks and artefacts
that are scattered along the river bottom.
Shipwrecks close by include the H.P. Bigelow,
Lillie Parsons, John B. King, Robert Gaskin,
Muscallonge, Fleur Marie and the Rothesay.
L
