DEUTSCHE WERKSTaTTEN Dresdner Bank, Pariser Platz, Berlin Selected interior fittings Dresdner Bank opened a new branch office in 1997 on Pariser Platz, in the very heart of Berlin, right next to the Brandenburg Gate. Visitors climb curved stairs within the circular atrium, 29 metres in diameter. This inner courtyard with its glass roof not only conveys a feeling of loftiness and spaciousness, but also floods daylight into the offices on all the floors surrounding it on three sides. The atrium, which is also used as a concert and exhibition hall, required a square-of-the-circle-solution in the most literal sense. This was also reflected in our work. Our company took on part of the interior fittings as well as some complicated parquet work. A patterned floor as envisioned by the architect was laid in the atrium: squares of Swiss pear-tree wood with Wenge intarsia. Particularly high attention to detail was required to realise gmp—s ideas for the hallways and the penthouse cafeteria: Canadian maple parquet from our subcontractor, the Assing company in Mohlsdorf, was laid out radially in these areas. In doing so, we took an approximate two metre long, 10 centimetre wide custom-cut pieces, supplied by Objekt + Parkett, Esslingen, and precisely milled it to the radius on CNC milling machines in Hellerau. The radius to the curvature was about 20 metres — precise workmanship imperative. For the first time, Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau not only provided interior fittings but also shouldered the responsibility for creating intricate parquet work. While this branch of the Dresdner Bank does not have any teller windows, Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau designed and developed the furnishings for the reception area as well as the lobby desk. These exacting pieces of furniture combine natural Pietra Serena stone fronts with Canadian maple, bronzed brass and leather writing surfaces.
