Introduction
The first fossil insectivore re main f r o m S w i t z e r l a n d mentioned i n the scie ntific lite ra­
ture, w a s p r o b a b l y a t a l p i d h u m er u s f r o m the locality of Ve rme s 2. The s p e c i m e n w a s
f o u n d a r o u n d 1850 b y the Swiss ge ologist J.B. G r e p p i n , w h o se nt it to H . v o n M e y e r i n
F r a n k f u r t . T h i s gre at palae ontologist m a d e a d r a w i n g of the h u m e r u s a n d m e n t i o n e d it
i n a c o m m u n i c a t i o n to Profe ssor B r o n n (1853). H . v o n M e y e r ' s d r a w i n g w a s p u b l i s h e d
i n 1887 (plate 4, f i g . 14) b y M . Schlosser, w h o p r o v i d e d it w i t h the name "Talpa
telluris
P o m e l " . H . v o n M e y e r also re ce ive d t w o m a n d i b l e fragme nts of an e rinace id f r o m J.B.
G r e p p i n , also f o u n d i n Ve rme s 2. H e m i s t a k e n l y i d e n t i f i e d t h em as "Didelphys (Peratherium) Blainvillei C h r . " . U n d e r this n a m e the se spe cime ns we re m e n t i o n e d i n t w o p u b ­
lications of J.B. G r e p p i n (1867,1870). M . Schlosser i d e n t i f i e d this e rinace id as Paras orex
socialis a n d f i g u r e d the t w o m a n d i b l e fragme nts i n 1887 (plate 2, figs 47 a n d 70).
In his s u r v e y of the m a m m a l s of the Swiss M o l a s s e H . G . Ste hlin (1914) gave f a u n a l
lists of a l l localities k n o w n at that time . In this c o m p i l a t i o n n u m er o u s f i n d i n g s of inse c­
tivores we re m e n t i o n e d for the first time . Joh. Hürze le r (1939) gave more de taile d infor­
m a t i o n a n d de scriptions of inse ctivore re mains i n a pape r about some m a m m a l faunas
of the U p p e r Fre shwate r M o l a s s e of north­we ste rn S w i t z e r l a n d . In this p u b l i c a t i o n in­
sectivores f r o m A n w i l , Z e g l i n g e n , a n d Ve rme s 2 we re de scribe d.
A mile stone i n insectivore re se arch is ce rtainly Joh. Hürze le r's re vision of the f a m i l y
of the D i m y l i d a e (1944), p r o b a b l y the first m o n o g r a p h of a fossil inse ctivore f a m i l y i n
w h o l e E u r o p e . In this v e r y cle ar a n d e x t r a o r d i n a r i l y w el l ­ i l l u s t r a t ed paper Hürze le r de ­
scribed thre e n ew ge ne ra a n d spe cie s. Be side s fossils f r o m France a n d G e r m a n y n u m e r ­
ous f i n d i n g s f r o m S w i t z e r l a n d were p u b l i s h e d .
The gre at Swiss Palae ontologist H a n s G eo r g Stehlin, w h o d u r i n g his life h a d w o r k e d
o n m a n y m a m m a l orde rs, m a i n l y ungulates a n d primate s, shortly before his de ath p u b ­
l i s h e d a pape r o n the p h y l o g e n y of the soricids (1940).
In 1968, the Base l N a t u r a l H i s t o r y M u s eu m for the first time carrie d out a large e x­
cavation for re cove ring fossil m a m m a l s . It w a s d e c i d e d to e xcavate i n A n w i l (Canton of

B a s e l l a n d ) , because since 1906 m a m m a l r e m a i n s h a d f r e q u e n t l y come to l i g h t there
d u r i n g construction w o r k . D u r i n g six m o n t h s a n area of 100 m w a s excavated b y h a n d ,

a n d ten tons of s e d i m e n t were screen-washed for r e c o v e r i n g s m a l l m a m m a l s . T h e exc a v a t i o n y i e l d e d about 6500 m a m m a l remains, m a i n l y s m a l l m a m m a l s , w h i c h subseq u e n t l y were described m o n o g r a p h i c a l l y (Engesser, 1972). W i t h 74 m a m m a l species the
A n w i l f a u n a is b y far the most diverse N e o g e n e m a m m a l f a u n a of S w i t z e r l a n d , cont a i n i n g 15 insectivores, of w h i c h three genera a n d species were n e w .
Subsequently, Engesser p u b l i s h e d a n u m b e r of papers o n N e o g e n e insectivores, i n
w h i c h also finds f r o m Swiss localities were described; a r e v i s i o n of the E u r o p e a n H e t erosoricinae (1975), a s t u d y of the m i l k d e n t i t i o n of the D i m y l i d a e (1976), a n d a c o m p a r i s o n of M i o c e n e insectivores a n d rodents f r o m N o r t h A m e r i c a a n d E u r o p e (1979). In
a s t u d y of the Late Oligocène / E a r l y M i o c e n e faunas of B o u d r y ( C a n t o n of Neuchatel)
some i m p o r t a n t insectivore remains were described ( M o j o n et al., 1985). B o l l i g e r (1992a)
described i n his thesis about M i o c e n e s m a l l m a m m a l s f r o m eastern S w i t z e r l a n d n u m e r ous insectivores f r o m m a n y localities, most of t h e m new.
For a l o n g time n o Pliocene m a m m a l s were k n o w n f r o m S w i t z e r l a n d , because the
sediments of that p e r i o d w e r e m o s t l y e r o d e d . In 1990, i n the t u n n e l of V u e des A l p e s
( C a n t o n of Neuchatel), a fissure f i l l i n g w a s d i s c o v e r e d c o n t a i n i n g s m a l l m a m m a l s of
M i d d l e Pliocene age. This fauna contains eight soricids a n d one t a l p i d , s h o w i n g affinities w i t h coeval faunas f r o m eastern E u r o p e (Bolliger et al., 1993).
Between 1978 a n d 1999 v a r i o u s projects of the Swiss N a t i o n a l Science F u n d a t i o n
were carried out w i t h the a i m to establish a b i o z o n a t i o n of the Swiss M o l a s s e based o n
m a m m a l s . W i t h i n this project m a n y n e w m a m m a l localities were f o u n d a n d m a n y tons
of sediments were w a s h e d . In this w a y , extensive material of Oligocène a n d M i o c e n e
s m a l l m a m m a l s w a s collected, i n c l u d i n g m a n y insectivores, most of t h e m thus far u n described.
F r o m 1990-1994 the Basel N a t u r a l H i s t o r y M u s e u m carried out excavations at the
N e b e l b e r g w e g near Nünningen ( C a n t o n of Solothurn). F o u r tons of sediments were
screen-washed, y i e l d i n g over nine h u n d r e d s m a l l m a m m a l teeth of 33 species, eight of
w h i c h insectivores (Kälin & Engesser, 2001). The fauna f r o m N e b e l b e r g w e g is of special
i m p o r t a n c e , since it is the youngest of the Swiss M o l a s s e .
The local m a m m a l zones used i n the f o l l o w i n g for characterizing the biostratigraphic
p o s i t i o n of the faunas refer to the b i o z o n a t i o n for S w i t z e r l a n d a n d S a v o y based o n
m a m m a l s of Engesser & M ö d d e n (1997) a n d B o l l i g e r (1997). T h e coordinates g i v e n for
each locality refer to the Swiss federal m a p (Landeskarte der Schweiz) 1 : 25 000.

type species, C. piveteaui, a n d reinstated the name Oligosorex for the other species p r e v i o u s l y assigned to Crocidosorex.
