Harry’s Holidays
Read the text.
Last year Harry was on holiday in Cornwall. He visited his uncle, Ben, in a small
fishing village.
One evening Harry and his uncle sat in the garden and Ben told stories about the
time when he was captain of a ship.
“It was a hard life for the men on the ships. The coast 1 was wild and the rocks 2
were very dangerous. Ships often hit the rocks and pirates stole everything from the
ships. There are also a lot of caves 3 here. Sometimes you can find what the pirates
left there,” said Ben.
“Pirates? You mean real pirates lived here and left their treasure 4 boxes in these
caves? Do you think I can find some treasure?” asked Harry.
“Oh yes, it can happen. Last year a tourist found an old golden ring and gave it to
our museum,” answered Ben.

St. Clement’s Caves
St. Clement’s Caves are on the West Hill in Hastings, East Sussex.
It is a modern tourist attraction and tells the story of pirates who lived in Hastings
200 years ago.
How to get there
Trains run from London Victoria Station (about 90 minutes).
Buses leave from London Visitor Centre (about 2 hours)
Some facts
The caves are home to The Pirates' Adventure. Visitors go on a tour around the caves.
There are 75 wax models. You’ll walk through a 44m tunnel. In the past pirates put their
stolen things in caves. A tour is about an hour.
