One of our research focuses on crisis situations and / or potentially traumatic situations from the psychic point of view . In particular, how experts in crisis intervention get involved ? What are their models and how do they regulate their actions in real situations ? Another research focuses on the clinical team working with persons suffering of alcohol abuse. Research methods mainly bring out qualitative analysis . Another axis addresses eating disorders and treatment evaluations of multifamily therapies. Research methods are mixed, both qualitative and quantitative . Our department is the only one in French speaking Belgium to develop these research methods in relation to these issues. Our results are disseminated through scientific communications and publications at an international level. Multiple Family Therapy (MFT) has already gained an established position in the treatment of eating disorders over the past decade. Still, there is little evidence in the literature on the effectiveness of MFT for treating eating disorders. This multifamily therapy program is offered to teenagers between 12 and 18 years with eating disorders (anorexia mostly) and their parents. This program consists of 21 intensive days distributed over one year. This is an outpatient treatment. Multifamily group typically includes 4-7 families. A first study examined the effects of a Multiple Family Therapy (MFT), based on the Maudsley approach, on eating disorder symptoms, quality of life and percentage of Expected Body Weight (%EBW) in adolescents with eating disorders (ED). Eighty-two adolescents with ED, aged between 11 and 19 years, were assessed before and after treatment using a set of self-reports. Results showed a significant increase in quality of life and in Expected Body Weight between the beginning and the end of treatment. Symptoms specific to eating disorders (except for bulimia) significantly decreased during treatment. This study suggests that Multiple Family Therapy may benefit adolescents with eating disorders. A second study examines now the therpaeutic processus that could explain those results by interviewing experts and therapists on the one hand, by interviewing the adolescents and their families on the other hand.
