G’day teachers,
mit diesem Heft möchten wir Sie und Ihre Schüler(innen) auf eine Reise ans andere Ende der Welt einladen. Australien klingt für uns zunächst nach Freiheit und Abenteuer, endloser Weite und pulsierender Großstadt, atemberaubenden Landschaften und einzigartiger Tierwelt. Es schwingt jedoch auch etwas Schwerfälliges mit, wenn wir an
die Geschichte des Kontinents und an politische Entwicklungen denken. Wir versuchen ein realistisches Bild zu
zeichnen, das die Neugier der jungen Fremdsprachenlerner auf diesen vielseitigen Kontinent weckt und sie gleichzeitig zum Nachdenken anregt. Dabei steht neben sprachlichen Lernchancen stets die Frage im Fokus, wie Kinder
erste interkulturelle kommunikative Kompetenzen (IKK) entwickeln können.
Uns – dem Herausgeberteam und der Redaktion von Grundschule Englisch – hat die Arbeit an diesem Heft sehr viel

Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is near the
northeast coast of Australia. It is
the largest group of
coral reefs in the world – the Great
Barrier Reef is almost as large as
Germany!
Coral reefs are built by millions of
tiny animals called “polyps”. Polyps
live in groups
called colonies. Each polyp builds
a house around itself like the shell
of a snail. Coral
reefs are made of thousands of these
houses. Coral reefs grow very slowly:
3 mm to
10 cm every year. The Great Barrier
Reef is more than 10,000 years old.
Thousands of different types of fi
sh live in the Great Barrier Reef.
Do you know the
movie “Finding Nemo”? Nemo is
a clownfish and lives in the Great
Barrier Reef.
There are turtles, whales, starfish
and seahorses, too.
You can take a trip in a glass-bottomed
boat to look at the reef or book a
snorkeling tour.
