▲ Europa Nostra was born in 1963, upon the initiative of Italia
Nostra, in response to the many threats to cultural heritage,
including the threat to Venice. Europa Nostra’s Golden Jubilee
Year therefore started on 15/03/2013 with a public debate,
organised in cooperation with Italia Nostra, at the UNESCO
Office in Venice. | Europa Nostra est née en 1963, à l’initiative
d’Italia Nostra, en réponse aux nombreuses menaces qui pèsent
sur le patrimoine culturel, y compris la menace sur Venise.
L’année du jubilé d’or d’Europa Nostra a donc été inaugurée
le 15/03/2013 avec un débat public, organisé en coopération
avec Italia Nostra, au Bureau de l’UNESCO à Venise.

I N
Europa Nostra represents a rapidly growing citizens’ movement for
the safeguarding of Europe’s cultural and natural heritage. Our
pan-European network is composed of 250 member organisations
(heritage associations and foundations with a combined membership of more than 5 million people), 150 associated organisations
(governmental bodies, local authorities and corporations) and also
1300 individual members who directly support our mission. In 2013,
Europa Nostra celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
Together,
we form an important lobby for cultural heritage in Europe;
■ we celebrate excellence through the European Heritage Awards
organised by Europa Nostra in partnership with the European
Union; and
■ we campaign to save Europe’s endangered historic monuments,
sites and cultural landscapes.

Europa Nostra représente le mouvement en plein essor pour la
sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel et naturel de l’Europe. Notre vaste
réseau européen regroupe 250 organisations membres (associations et
fondations pour la préservation du patrimoine avec un nombre total de
plus de 5 millions d’adhérents), 150 organisations associées (organismes
gouvernementaux, villes et collectivités locales, et entreprises), et
également 1300 membres individuels qui apportent leur soutien direct
à notre mission. En 2013, Europa Nostra a célébré son 50e Anniversaire.
Ensemble,
■ nous formons un important lobby pour le patrimoine culturel
en Europe ;
■ nous célébrons l’excellence par le biais du Concours européen
du patrimoine organisé par Europa Nostra en partenariat avec
l’Union européenne ; et

Europe is a Symphony of Cultures

I was delighted to be the President of Europa Nostra in the year
during which we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our organisation.
This Jubilee Year was a perfect occasion to measure the progress which
we have made, but also to become fully aware of the relevance and
importance of our mission for Europe today. Especially in times when
the core values which lies at the heart of the European project are
questioned, both from inside and outside Europe’s borders.

Last December, I was also very pleased to visit Brussels. I was indeed deeply
moved to be in the heart of Europe’s capital city, together with Europa
Nostra’s numerous members and partners, for the closing events of our
Jubilee Year: from the conference at the Solvay Library - a proud laureate
of one of our Awards, to the Citizens’ dialogue and concert held at BOZAR,
and with high level meetings, with President Barroso and Commissioner
Vassiliou and the exhibition on our Awards held at the Berlaymont, the
EC headquarters in Brussels. There also, we could not have imagined a
better choreography for placing the spotlight on the key role played by
Europa Nostra for the advancement of the Europe of Culture.
I keep a great memory of Athens. Special thanks to our Vice-President,
Costa Carras and the entire team at Elliniki Etairia! We could not have
dreamt of a more majestic stage for the Awards-giving ceremony under
the Acropolis: 4000 persons were gathered that night at the Odeon of
Herodes Atticus to celebrate – with Europa Nostra and with the
European Union – the Europe of Culture. That evening, we were all
united by the feeling of pride to be the citizens of our Europe: a Europe
which is much more than an internal market, a common currency or a
military alliance; a Europe which is a wonderful symphony of cultures!
And we were carried by the hope that it is this Europe which will be able
to draw from the power of its cultures in order to win – yet another time
in its long history – a victory over all the difficulties with which its
citizens are struggling today.
In order to successfully fulfill this role, Europa Nostra cannot act alone.
It must build many alliances and fruitful partnerships, not only with
other organisations active in the field of heritage, but also with artists,
intellectuals, scientists, in brief with the wider world of culture. This
approach lies at the heart of the ‘New Narrative for Europe’ initiative
which has been launched to stimulate our quest to for formulating the
right arguments and finding the right words to help Europeans reconnect with the European ideal. We were glad to actively contribute to
this initiative which I discussed, at length, with President Barroso
during our very friendly meeting in Brussels. Let us hope that in the
future, European leaders will listen more closely and more openly to all
those voices which speak on behalf of the Europe of Culture. This is, in
our view, indispensible for the survival of the European project.
Speaking about challenges and victories, I am especially pleased with
the launch of our new programme ‘The 7 Most Endangered’. This
programme reflects our resolution to join forces to save the gems of our
shared heritage which are facing degradation or are at risk of being lost
forever. It also reflects our conviction that we should never accept a
defeat: together we can change the course of events. The first results of
this new programme are encouraging; they prove that if we have a shared
determination and if we pool our expertise, endangered monuments
and sites in Europe can be saved.
If we wish to speak in a convincing way about Europe, we must find a new
language and we must strive to provide Europe with a new impetus.
And in order to find the necessary inspiration and strength, we must
imperatively draw on the treasures of our culture and our cultural heritage.
They indeed constitute the fertile soil which feeds our vitality and our
creativity.

The year 2013 was marked by an unprecedented level of activity. I wish
to congratulate all those who were the architects of this Jubilee
programme, and especially our Board and our Council, under the visionary
and inspiring leadership of our Executive President, Denis de Kergorlay,
as well as to our hard-working Secretariat, led by our enthusiastic and

of our team and the harmony with which this team works are among
the greatest assets of our organisation. I also wish to give thanks
personally to all our donors, public and private, for their confidence
and generosity. Together, we must make sure that the level of our
resources matches the level of our ambitions.

En parlant des défis et des victoires, je suis particulièrement heureux du
lancement de notre nouveau programme « Les 7 sites les plus menacés ».
Ce programme reflète notre détermination à agir ensemble pour sauver
des joyaux de notre patrimoine commun menacés de dégradation et
même de disparition. Il reflète aussi notre volonté de ne jamais nous
résigner à la défaite : ensemble nous pouvons changer le cours des choses.
Les premiers résultats obtenus sont encourageants et montrent qu’avec
conviction et mise en commun de nos compétences, des sites et des
monuments d’Europe peuvent être sauvés.
Pour parler de l’Europe, il faut trouver un nouveau langage et être
animé d’un nouveau souffle. Et pour trouver l’inspiration et la force
nécessaires, nous devons impérativement puiser dans les trésors de
notre culture et de notre patrimoine culturel qui sont le grand vivier de
notre vitalité et de notre créativité.

Je garde un souvenir inoubliable d’Athènes. Un très grand merci à notre
Vice-président, Costa Carras et à toute l’équipe d’Elliniki Etairia! Nous
n’aurions pas pu rêver d’une mise en scène plus majestueuse pour la
Cérémonie de remise de nos Prix au pied de l’Acropole : 4000 personnes
étaient ce soir-là rassemblées à l’Odéon de Herodes Atticus pour
célébrer - avec Europa Nostra et avec l’Union européenne - l’Europe de
la Culture. Ce soir-là, nous étions tous unis par un sentiment de fierté
d’être citoyens de notre Europe : une Europe qui est bien plus qu’un
marché intérieur, une monnaie commune ou une alliance militaire ;
une Europe qui est une merveilleuse symphonie de cultures ! Et nous
étions habités par l’espoir que cette Europe-là saurait puiser dans la
force de ses cultures pour remporter - une nouvelle fois dans sa longue
histoire - la victoire sur tant de difficultés dont les Européens se
sentent assaillis.
Et pour bien remplir ce rôle, Europa Nostra ne peut pas agir seule. Elle
doit nouer de nombreuses alliances et de fructueux partenariats, non
seulement avec d’autres organisations actives dans le domaine du
patrimoine, mais aussi avec les artistes, les intellectuels, les scientifiques,
bref avec l’ensemble du monde de la culture. Ceci est le sens même de
l’initiative du « Nouveau Récit pour l’Europe » qui a pour objet de trouver les arguments et les mots justes qui permettront aux Européens de
renouer avec l’idéal européen. Nous avons été heureux de contribuer
activement à cette initiative dont j’ai eu l’occasion de parler longuement
avec le Président Barroso lors de notre rencontre fort amicale à Bruxelles.
Espérons qu’à l’avenir, les dirigeants européens sauront être plus
étroitement et plus sincèrement à l’écoute des voix qui s’expriment au
nom de l’Europe de la Culture. Il en va de la survie du projet européen.

L’année 2013 fut marquée par un nombre d’activités sans précédent. Je
tiens à féliciter tous ceux et celles qui en étaient les architectes, et
particulièrement notre Comité exécutif et notre Conseil, sous le leadership
inspiré et inspirant de notre Président exécutif, Denis de Kergorlay, ainsi
que notre Secrétariat, sous la direction enthousiaste et efficace de notre
˘ Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic.
´ En effet, la qualité

de notre équipe et l’entente qui règne en son sein sont parmi les
plus grands atouts de notre organisation. Je tiens aussi à remercier
personnellement tous nos mécènes, publics ou privés, pour leur confiance
et leur générosité. Ensemble, nous devons faire en sorte que les
ressources de notre organisation soient à la hauteur de nos ambitions.
En décembre dernier, j’ai également été très heureux de me rendre à
Bruxelles. J’ai été profondément ému d’être au cœur de la capitale de
l’Europe, avec de nombreux membres et partenaires d’Europa Nostra, pour
la clôture de l’année de notre jubilé : de la conférence à la Bibliothèque
Solvay, lauréat d’un de nos Prix, au dialogue citoyen et au concert qui
s’en est suivi au Palais des Beaux-Arts, en passant par des rencontres à
haut niveau avec le President Barroso et la Commissaire Vassiliou et le
vernissage de l’exposition sur nos Prix au Berlaymont, le siège de la
Commission européenne. Encore une fois, nous n’aurions pas pu rêver
d’une meilleure chorégraphie pour témoigner de la place incontournable
que notre organisation joue à présent pour la promotion d’une Europe
de la Culture.

J’ai été très heureux d’être le Président d’Europa Nostra durant l’année de
son 50ème anniversaire. Cette année nous a permis de mesurer le chemin
parcouru mais aussi de prendre pleinement conscience de l’actualité de
notre mission si importante pour l’Europe. Surtout au moment où les
valeurs sur lesquelles repose le projet européen se voient mises en
cause, tant de l’intérieur que de l’extérieur des frontières de l’Europe.

2013 was a year in which we were proud to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of Europa Nostra. This was indeed a year of celebration…Celebration of 50 years of continuous action in support of
Europe’s heritage, both cultural and natural. Celebration of our
founding fathers and of all those women and men who have
generously given to Europa Nostra their expertise, time and also
their financial support; it is thanks to all of them that Europa Nostra
has grown - over the years - into a leading European organisation
promoting and defending the interests of our cultural heritage.
Celebration also of our fruitful cooperation and dialogue with the EU
Institutions... Finally, celebration of new achievements and new
partnerships, such as the ‘7 Most Endangered’ programme launched
this year with the support of the European Investment Bank
Institute or the European cooperation project ‘Cultural Heritage
Counts for Europe’ supported by the EU ‘Culture Programme’ and
run in partnership with members of the European Heritage Alliance

In 2013, we organised a true ‘European marathon’ of events, small
and large, in Venice, London, Athens, Dubrovnik, Lisbon, Cologne,
Paris, Brussels and Berlin. We have strengthened the ties with our
member organisations in various European countries, and especially
in Greece, Italy and Portugal. We took active part in a wider
discussion on the future of Europe through our involvement in the
‘New Narrative for Europe’ process, initiated by the European
Parliament and run under the leadership of President Barroso.
Finally, from the communication point of view, this Golden Jubilee
Year was also a great success: with exceptional media coverage of our
Congress in Athens; with an ever growing presence in social media
and the launch of a new partnership with the Google Cultural
Institute; with numerous articles published in the magazines of our
members, and with a very large audience of 4000 persons at the
unforgettable awards-giving ceremony at the foot of the Acropolis.

Our respectful and warm thanks go to our President, Maestro Plácido
Domingo. His active participation in key Jubilee events – in Athens
(in June) and in Brussels (in December) – as well as his profound
commitment to our cause have contributed decisively to Europa
Nostra’s rayonnement and to its continous growth in impact and
influence. We also wish to pay special tribute to our award winners;
their creativity, passion, expertise and perseverance serve as a
source of inspiration for our ongoing work.
In regards to our finances, we are very proud that thanks to the generosity of our numerous members and donors, especially from
Greece, combined with the vital financial support which we receive
from the European Union, the year 2013 ended with a modest surplus.
Working to further develop our organisation while ensuring that
its finances are in good health is a top priority of our Board, as
indicated in the report of our new Treasurer, Mrs Truze Lodder (see
page 42).
Today, we stand ready to face, with confidence and imagination, the
new decade ahead of us, beginning with the year 2014 which will be

l’Institut culturel de Google ; avec de nombreux articles publiés dans
les revues de nos membres, et avec la participation du grand public

Nos remerciements respectueux et chaleureux vont à notre

évènements majeurs de notre Jubilé - à Athènes (en juin) et à
Bruxelles (en décembre) - ainsi que son profond dévouement à notre
cause, ont contribué de façon décisive au rayonnement d’Europa
Nostra et à l’accroissement de l’impact et de l’influence de notre
action. Notre hommage va aussi aux lauréats de nos prix dont la
créativité, la passion, l’expertise et la persévérance servent de
source d’inspiration pour notre travail en cours.

En 2013 nous avons été fiers de célébrer le 50ème anniversaire
d’Europa Nostra. Ce fut en effet une année de célébration... La
célébration de nos 50 années d’action continue en faveur du
patrimoine culturel et naturel de l’Europe. La célébration de nos
pères fondateurs et de toutes ces femmes et ces hommes qui ont
généreusement mis au service d’Europa Nostra leur expertise, leur
engagement et leurs moyens financiers. C’est bien grâce à toutes ces
personnes qu’Europa Nostra a pu devenir – au fil des années – la
principale organisation européenne qui défend les intérêts de notre
patrimoine culturel. La célébration également de notre dialogue
fructueux avec les institutions de l’Union européenne. Et enfin, la
célébration de nouvelles initiatives et de nouveaux partenariats,
tels que le programme des « 7 sites les plus menacés », lancé en
2013 avec le soutien de l’Institut de la Banque européenne
d’investissement, ou le projet de coopération européenne « Le
Patrimoine culturel compte pour l’Europe » soutenu par le
« Programme Culture » de l’Union européenne et mené ensemble
avec les membres de l’Alliance européenne pour le patrimoine 3.3.

L’Europe gagnera... grâce à son patrimoine !
Du côté des ressources financières, nous sommes particulièrement
fiers d’annoncer que grâce à la générosité de nombreux adhérents et
mécènes privés – notamment en Grèce –, conjugués avec le soutien
financier vital qui nous est apporté par les institutions européennes,
nous avons pu terminer l’année avec un léger surplus financier.
Faire avancer notre organisation tout en lui assurant une bonne
santé financière figure parmi les priorités de notre Comité exécutif

very important for Europe. This year will be marked by the start of
the new EU Programmes based on the current 7 year EU budget for
2014-2020. We must make sure that heritage concerns and interests
are duly considered in these programmes. Irrespective of the results
of the European elections in May 2014, we shall also need to invest
special efforts in developing fruitful relations with new members of
the European Parliament and the new leaders of various EU
Institutions.

The present-day crisis cannot be reduced to an economic crisis
alone; we are in fact facing a crisis of trust. Not only between
Europe’s Institutions and Europe’s citizens, but above all, a crisis of
trust within ourselves. Therefore, the European Institutions and also
the European citizens must invest more efforts into rediscovering
and reaffirming the core cultural values which are embedded in the
European project. As for Europa Nostra, together with our numerous
member organisations, our task is to provide a structure and leadership to Europe’s heritage ‘lobby’ advocating for a true European policy in regards to cultural heritage. We also must further mobilise
Europe’s civil society to oppose, whenever and wherever necessary,
political or economic developments which are detrimental to
Europe’s monuments, sites and landscapes.

In conclusion, we wish to thank all members of our vast network,
and in particular members of our various governing bodies and
committees, as well as our competent and committed staff, for their
vital contribution and support. Our networks’ good performance and
impact depend, to a large extent, on this team effort. We therefore
invite you to become even more actively involved – as members,
volunteers, experts or donors – in the many different activities
which we shall undertaken in 2014 and beyond.

Nous voilà à présent prêts à affronter – avec confiance et imagination –
la prochaine décennie de la vie d’Europa Nostra. Pour commencer,
l’année 2014 sera particulièrement importante pour l’Europe. Elle sera,
entre autres, marquée par l’entrée en vigueur de nouveaux programmes
de l’UE adoptés sur la base du nouveau budget européen pour 20142020. Nous devons veiller à ce que ces programmes prennent dûment
en compte les intérêts du patrimoine. Et puis, quels que soient les
résultats des élections européennes du mois de mai, il nous faudra
nouer de fructueux rapports avec les nouveaux parlementaires et
les nouveaux dirigeants des différentes institutions de l’Union
européenne.
La crise actuelle va au delà d’une simple crise économique ; il s’agit
d’une crise de confiance. Pas seulement entre les institutions et les
citoyens de l’Europe, mais surtout une crise de confiance en
nous-mêmes. Les Institutions européennes - mais également les
citoyens - doivent donc s’investir davantage dans la redécouverte et
la réaffirmation des principales valeurs culturelles qui sont à la base
du projet européen. Quant à Europa Nostra, ensemble avec nos
nombreuses organisations membres, notre tâche est de structurer et

développement politique ou économique qui soit préjudiciable pour
les monuments, les sites et les paysages en Europe.

The Policy Conference ‘Cultural Heritage for Europe, Europe for Cultural
Heritage’, organised in cooperation with our corporate friend, Edificio, at
Bibliothèque Solvay, gave the floor to eminent experts, decision-makers
and high-level representatives from EU institutions. It demonstrated
the multiple values of heritage and outlined the future EU strategy
for cultural heritage. The morning session consisted of three panel
discussions: ‘Contributing to a Sustainable Development’, ‘Engaging
Communities’ and ‘The 7 Most Endangered: the way forward’. In
addition, Europa Nostra’s project ‘Cultural Heritage Counts for Europe’,
supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union, was
publicly launched (see also below). In the afternoon, after the panel
discussion ‘Heritage Movement without Borders’, the final session was
introduced by a major policy speech by EN President, Plácido Domingo.
High-level representatives of all EU Institutions and bodies took the
floor in this concluding session, when we also viewed a video message
from Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament. They all
agreed that cultural heritage is a resource for Europe and that the EU
should develop a true policy with regard to heritage.
After the Conference, Commissioner Vassiliou and Maestro Domingo
opened the photo exhibition ‘Europe: Our Past, our Future’ about the
EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards at the EC headquarters. The exhibition featured 33 outstanding achievements in
Conservation, Research, Dedicated Service, and Education, Training
and Awareness-Raising which were awarded since 2002. The President
of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, attended the
vernissage and made an inspiring speech, praising the fruitful partnership between the European Commission and Europa Nostra and
highlighting the key role of civil society players in strengthening the
cultural dimension of the European project.
In the evening, during a Citizens’ Dialogue held at BOZAR, the future
of Europe and the role of culture as a catalyst for European integration
were debated by a distinguished panel composed of Maestro Domingo,
Commissioner Vassiliou, Isabelle Durant (Vice-President of the
European Parliament), Michelangelo Pistoletto (renowned Italian
visual artist), and Paul Dujardin (Director of the Palais des Beaux-Arts).
700 people participated in this live-streamed event, which was
organised by the Representation of the European Commission in
Belgium and the Chancellery of the Prime Minister in partnership with
BOZAR and Europa Nostra, and which ended with the concert entitled
‘European Inspirations’ by four beautiful European voices: Alexandra
Gravas, mezzo-soprano from Greece, Katia Guerreiro, fado singer from
Portugal, Ivan Thirion, baritone from Belgium and Kakhader Shavidze,
bass from Georgia.

La conférence politique « Patrimoine pour l’Europe, l’Europe pour le
Patrimoine », organisée en coopération avec Edificio, notre entreprise
amie, à la Bibliothèque Solvay, a fourni une plateforme de débat entre

de l’UE. Elle a démontré les multiples bénéfices du patrimoine et

CULTURAL HERITAGE COUNTS FOR EUROPE
On 3-4 July, the European cooperation project ‘Cultural Heritage
Counts for Europe: Towards a European Index for Valuing Cultural
Heritage’ supported by the EU Culture Programme, held its first
Steering Committee meeting in Brussels. The project partners are
Heritage Europe, ENCATC, International Cultural Centre in Krakow,
Raymond Lemaire Institute from Leuven, Heritage Alliance from London
and Europa Nostra, acting as project coordinator. This project was also
discussed with members of the European Heritage Alliance 3.3 on
4 December before being publicly launched on 5 December at the
occasion of the Europa Nostra Policy Conference in Brussels. The
“Cultural Heritage Counts for Europe” project aims to present strong and
convincing arguments for developing an EU policy for cultural heritage.
In order to achieve this goal, a broad mapping project has been
designed to collect evidence-based research conducted in the EU Member
States on the social, economic, cultural and environmental impact of
immovable cultural heritage and on its multiple benefits for the society.

to steer the ‘New Narrative for Europe’ project. The aim of this initiative
was to bring together Europe’s artists, intellectuals, scientists and
cultural practitioners to debate on the values and symbols that unite
European citizens (major public events were organised in July in
Warsaw and in December in Milan) and to draft an inspiring text with
a new vision for Europe based on the strength of Europe’s culture and
heritage (this text was launched on 1 March 2014 in Berlin in the
presence of President Barroso and Chancellor Merkel).

Les 3-4 juillet dernier, le projet de coopération européenne
« Patrimoine culturel compte pour l’Europe : vers l’élaboration d’un
index européen pour mesurer la valeur du patrimoine culturel », soutenu
par le programme Culture de l’UE, a tenu la première réunion de son
comité directeur à Bruxelles. Les partenaires du projet sont Heritage
Europe, ENCATC, le Centre Culturel International de Cracovie,
Institut Raymond Lemaire de Louvain, Heritage Alliance de Londres
et Europa Nostra qui agit comme coordinateur du projet. Ce projet a
également fait l’objet de discussions avec les membres de l’Alliance
européenne pour le patrimoine 3.3, le 4 décembre, avant d’être
inauguré le 5 décembre à l’occasion de la conférence d’Europa Nostra
à Bruxelles. Le projet « Patrimoine culturel compte pour l’Europe »
vise à rassembler des arguments solides et convaincants pour
l’élaboration d’une politique de l’UE en faveur du patrimoine culturel.

On 16 June 2013, at the Odeion of Herodes Atticus located at the
foot of the Acropolis, the European Union and Europa Nostra
celebrated the 30 Award winning achievements of the EU Prize for
Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards 2013, chosen from
among 197 submitted entries from 30 European countries. During
the ceremony, the 7 Grand Prix Laureates were announced, each
receiving the highest accolade and a monetary reward of Z 10,000.
The winner of the Public Choice Award 2013 was the restoration
project of the Propylaea Central Building at the Athenian Acropolis.

Commissioner responsible for Education, Culture, Multilingualism
and Youth, together with Plácido Domingo, President of Europa

SPOTLIGHT ON THE 2013 EUROPEAN HERITAGE AWARDS CEREMONY:
A TRULY MAJESTIC EVENT UNDER THE ACROPOLIS
The 2013 European Heritage Awards Ceremony which was organised
with the invaluable cooperation of Elliniki Etairia - the Greek Society
for the Environment and Cultural Heritage, brought together some
4000 people from Greece and all over Europe. On this memorable
occasion, we honoured “the best of the best” achievements in the
heritage field. This evening was a true celebration of “Europe of Culture”
in the breathtaking setting of the Roman Odeion of Herodes Atticus.
In recognition of 40 years of his visionary leadership, generous
dedication and tireless efforts in promoting Europa Nostra’s mission
and in enhancing the organisation’s growth and development, Costa
Carras received from Plácido Domingo a Medal of Honour, the highest
distinction conferred by Europa Nostra to an individual member who
has made an exceptional contribution to our work.
The Awards Ceremony was enhanced by the 15-year-old singer
Yiorgos Ioannou from Cyprus, and by the renowned Greek singer
Mario Frangoulis with his moving interpretation of the song
‘Imagine’ by John Lennon. The evening ended with an impressive
artistic performance entitled ‘The Greek and Nature - from Homer to
Elytis’, which was conceived for this occasion by Lydia and Costa
Carras, co-founders of Elliniki Etairia, working closely with a series of
prominent artists, among them Lydia Koniordou, Maria Farantouri
and Dionysis Savvopoulos from Greece as well as Alkidis Ioannidis
from Cyprus. This performance highlighted the symbolic and creative
interaction between man and nature in Greek culture, a true cornerstone of our European civilization.

In his speech, Plácido Domingo called for a New Deal for Culture in
Europe, stating that “Our Culture is what makes Europe - Europe”.
Androulla Vassiliou highlighted the importance of investing in heritage:
“It is in times of crisis that culture is most needed”. Costa Carras - a leading
figure of Europa Nostra and Elliniki Etairia, Europa Nostra’s country
representation in Greece - underlined the legacy of Greece to
Europe’s fundamental values and principles, and reminded us that the
beauty of our natural environment together with the breadth and
depth of our cultural heritage represent Europe’s chief comparative
advantages at a global scale.

La Cérémonie européenne de remise des Prix du patrimoine culturel,
organisée avec la précieuse collaboration d’Elliniki Etairia - la Société
grecque pour l’environnement et le patrimoine culturel, a réuni quelque
4000 personnes venant de Grèce et de toute l’Europe. En cette occasion
inoubliable, nous avons honoré « les meilleures des meilleures »
réalisations dans le domaine du patrimoine. Cette soirée fut une véritable célébration de «l’Europe de la culture » dans le cadre exceptionnel
du site romain de l’Odéon d’Hérode Atticus.
Dans son discours, Plácido Domingo a plaidé en faveur du lancement
d’un véritable New Deal pour la culture en Europe, affirmant que « notre
culture est ce qui fait de l’Europe - l’Europe ». Androulla Vassiliou a souligné
qu’il était important d’investir dans le patrimoine : « C’est en temps de
crise que la culture devient encore plus fondamentale ».
Costa Carras – une personnalité clé d’Europa Nostra d’Elliniki Etairia,
délégation nationale d’Europa Nostra en Grèce – a souligné que
le patrimoine grec était incorporé parmi les valeurs et principes
fondamentaux de l’Europe. Il nous a aussi rappelé que la beauté de
notre environnement naturel, ainsi que l’ampleur et l’importance de
notre patrimoine culturel, représentaient des atouts comparatifs majeurs
pour l’Europe à l’échelle mondiale.
En reconnaissance des 40 ans de son leadership visionnaire, de sa
générosité, et de son dévouement inlassable au service de la mission, de
la croissance et du développement d’Europa Nostra, Plácido Domingo a
décerné à Costa Carras la Médaille d’honneur d’Europa Nostra, la plus
haute distinction conférée par Europa Nostra à un membre individuel
ayant contribué de manière exceptionnelle à l’œuvre de l’organisation.

7 lauréats du Grand Prix ont été annoncés, chacun recevant la plus
haute distinction et une récompense monétaire de 10.000 Z. Le
gagnant du Prix du Public 2013 fut le projet de restauration du
bâtiment central des Propylées à l’Acropole d’Athènes.

Danger
Europa Nostra’s new flagship programme ‘The 7 Most Endangered’, developed in partnership with the European Investment Bank Institute, was launched in January 2013. The programme
identifies the most endangered monuments and sites in Europe and seeks to mobilize public and private partners on a local, national and European level to find a sustainable future for those

Saving endangered historic monuments and sites lies at the heart
of Europa Nostra’s mission. We campaign side by side our member
organisations and strategic partners to oppose threats to specific
monuments, sites and landscapes throughout Europe.

Roman amphitheatre of Dürres in Albania
This early 2nd century AD Roman amphitheatre remained unknown
until its excavation in 1960s. Located in the very centre of Dürres, it
is one of the most remarkable heritage sites not only in Albania but
in the whole Balkan region. Due to its late discovery, the monument
is confronted with chaotic urban planning, which has affected its
structure, and it has suffered from continued deterioration.

Buffer zone in the historic centre of Nicosia in Cyprus
The Cyprus conflict led to the division of the island and the creation
of the Nicosia buffer zone in 1974, cutting through the historic
centre and disrupting the city’s cohesion. Decades of abandonment
have undermined the high architectural value of the buildings
located in the buffer zone, among which are medieval and neoclassical
monuments. The buffer zone also has a devastating impact on the
quality of the environment and living conditions of the entire city
centre.

Vauban’s 17th century fortifications in Briançon in France
This 17th century masterpiece of mountain fortifications, considered
to be one of the finest in the world and recognised by UNESCO in
2008 as part of the network of 12 fortified ensembles designed by
Vauban in France, is today seriously threatened by the degradation
of the rocky foundations, severe frost and a general lack of maintenance.

Spotlight on the launch of the ‘7 Most Endangered’ programme
To mark its 50th anniversary, Europa Nostra decided to launch a new
flagship programme ‘The 7 Most Endangered’, with the European
Investment Bank Institute as a founding partner. This programme
was developed to identify a priority list of heritage sites in danger,
with the aim to mobilize support from public and private partners on
local, national and European levels, and develop sustainable plans
for safeguarding those sites. In April, an international Advisory
Panel selected the short list of 14 most threatened landmarks of
Europe. The final list of 7 sites was decided by the Europa Nostra
Board and announced during the Congress in Athens, on 12 June.
From September to November, visits to the 7 sites were organised by
delegations composed of heritage experts appointed by Europa
Nostra, as well as of financial experts appointed by the EIB Institute
and the Council of Europe Development Bank, as an associate partner
of the programme. Their reports with recommendations for concrete
rescue plans were presented during the Council meeting in Brussels,
on 6 December. In December, Europa Nostra also started a partnership
with the Google Cultural Institute, with the launch of the online
exhibition ‘The 7 Most Endangered: Campaigning to save Europe’s
most threatened sites’, which will help raise wider awareness about
the endangered sites identified by this new programme.

Coup de projecteur sur le lancement des « 7 sites les plus menacés »
Pour marquer son 50ème anniversaire, Europa Nostra a décidé de
lancer son nouveau programme phare des « 7 sites les plus menacés »,
avec l’Institut de la Banque européenne d’investissement comme
partenaire fondateur. Ce programme a été développé pour établir
une liste prioritaire de sites du patrimoine en danger, dans le but de
mobiliser le soutien de partenaires publics et privés aux niveaux
local, national et européen, et d’élaborer des plans de développement
durable pour la sauvegarde de ces sites. En avril, un comité consultatif
international a présélectionné 14 des sites les plus menacés en
Europe. La liste finale des 7 sites a été choisie par le Comité exécutif
d’Europa Nostra et annoncée lors du Congrès à Athènes, le 12 juin
dernier. De septembre à novembre, des visites des 7 sites ont été
menées par des délégations composées d’experts du patrimoine
désignés par Europa Nostra, ainsi que d’experts financiers désignés
par l’Institut de la BEI ainsi que par la Banque de développement du
Conseil de l’Europe, partenaire associé de ce nouveau programme.
Leurs rapports avec des recommandations pour l’élaboration de
plans concrets de sauvegarde ont été présentés lors de la réunion du
Conseil le 6 décembre à Bruxelles. En décembre, Europa Nostra a
également inauguré un nouveau partenariat avec l’Institut Culturel
Les 7 sites et monuments les plus menacés, sélectionnés pour
2013 sont :
■ Amphithéâtre romain à Durrës en Albanie
Cet amphithéâtre romain datant du début du 2ème siècle après J.C.
est resté inconnu jusqu’aux années 60. Situé dans le centre de la
ville de Dürres, il est l’un des sites patrimoniaux les plus significatifs
non seulement en Albanie, mais dans toute la région des Balkans.
Du fait de sa découverte tardive, le monument a souffert d’une
détérioration constante et de l’aménagement urbain chaotique
qui a dégradé sa structure.
■ La zone tampon du centre historique de Nicosie à Chypre
Au lendemain du conflit chypriote, en 1974, la zone tampon de
Nicosie qui traverse le centre historique fut créée, ce qui a bouleversé
la cohésion de la ville. Suite à des décennies d’abandon, la valeur
architecturale des bâtiments de cette zone – parmi lesquels se
trouvent des monuments médiévaux et néoclassiques – s’est
appauvrie. La zone tampon a également eu un effet dévastateur
sur la qualité de l’environnement ainsi que sur les conditions de
vie de l’ensemble du centre-ville.
■ Les fortifications du 17ème siècle de Vauban à Briançon à France
Ce chef-d’œuvre de fortifications du 17ème siècle situé dans les
montagnes, considéré comme l’une des citadelles les plus abouties
dans le monde et reconnue par l’UNESCO en 2008 parmi le réseau

Renaissance monastery of San Benedetto Po in Italy
During the last decade, an extensive and costly restoration had
returned the 16th century San Benedetto Po monastery to its former
splendour. Alas, the earthquakes of 20 and 29 May 2012 severely
damaged the monument and affected the entire conservation process.
Since then, large parts of the complex have become inaccessible
to the public due to the risks of falling debris or collapse.
15th Century monastery in Setúbal in Portugal
The monastery of Jesus in Setúbal is one of the first examples of
the Portuguese Late Gothic style, known as Manueline, and has
been recognised – by the attribution of an European Heritage
Label - as a tangible witness of Europe’s shared history. Despite its
rare historic and heritage value, the monument has been closed
to the public for more than 20 years, due to the fact that the
Portuguese State lacked funds to cover the extensive and costly
conservation project.
Historic mining landscape of Rosia Montana in Romania
The landscape of Rosia Montana has been masterfully transformed
by mining activities for more than three millennia. The remnants
of surface habitation demonstrate an intense interaction between
man and the environment throughout the centuries. However,
this historic mining landscape, one of the most representatives in
Europe, is today seriously threatened by a large-scale, open-cast
gold mining project.

For 15 centuries the Church of St. George was the spiritual home
of the large Armenian community in the Turkish city of Mardin.
This historical building was founded in 420 AD and was in use
until 1915, when the Armenian population was forced to leave the
city. In spite of its outstanding historical and cultural importance,
this monument is currently in an advanced state of decay.

Paysage minier historique de Ro∫ia Montan„ en Roumanie
Le paysage de Ro∫ia Montan„ a été profondément transformé par
les activités minières depuis plus de trois millénaires. A la surface,
les vestiges urbains démontrent qu’une forte interaction entre
l’homme et son environnement a eu lieu tout au long des siècles.
Cependant, ce paysage minier historique, l’un des plus significatifs
en Europe, est aujourd’hui sérieusement menacé par un très grand
projet de mine d’or à ciel ouvert.
Eglise arménienne de Saint-Georges à Mardin en Turquie
Pendant 15 siècles, l’Église de Saint-Georges fut le foyer spirituel
d’une très large communauté arménienne dans la ville turque de
Mardin. Ce bâtiment historique a été fondé en 420 après JC et a
été lié à la population arménienne jusqu’en 1915, lorsque celle-ci a
été forcée de quitter la ville. En dépit de son importance historique
et culturelle, ce monument se trouve actuellement dans un état
de délabrement avancé.

heritage professionals, volunteers and supporters from throughout Europe to meet, debate and inspire each other. We also engage

European or international networks related to heritage, students

world or the public at large. Throughout the year, we communicate
with our members and stakeholders through social media, our

SPOTLIGHT ON ATHENS: 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONGRESS,
13 – 17 JUNE 2013
The 2013 Congress, which took place in Athens and celebrated Europa
Nostra’s Golden Jubilee, was made possible thanks to the major
assistance and dedication of our Country Representation in Greece,
Elliniki Etairia, led by EN Vice-President Costa Carras. Invaluable
financial support was received from a wide range of public and private
bodies in Greece, thus enabling a varied and most attractive programme.
The Congress and the Awards Ceremony received extensive media
coverage in the press, on TV and by online media.

THE CONGRESS WAS COMPOSED OF A SERIES OF EVENTS:
■ Following the Council meeting held in the impressive Acropolis
Museum, the Local Award Ceremony for the Averoff Building – a 2012
Grand Prix winner of an EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra
Award – took place at the National Technical University of Athens.

The Heritage Excellence Fair with presentations by the 2013 Award
Winners, organised at the Benaki Museum Pireos, served as a platform
for creative exchanges and attracted a large interested public.
The participants also took part in an inspiring pilgrimage to Ancient
Athenian Democracy, which ended with a memorable visit to the
National Observatory of Athens where Androulla Vassiliou, European
Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth,
and Plácido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra, made meaningful
and poetic speeches to the large audience of 400 people from Greece
and the rest of Europe.
The 50th anniversary General Assembly was the occasion to pay
tribute to all women and men who have contributed over the years
to the development of Europa Nostra. Many of them were present
in Athens, including HRH the Prince Consort of Denmark, former
President of Europa Nostra. Costa Carras made an inspiring
overview of Europa Nostra’s achievements over 50 years of action,
while Plácido Domingo, the current President, also spoke about the
many challenges ahead of us.
A panel discussion on ‘Europe-wide mobilisation for saving Europe’s
endangered heritage’ took place at the General Assembly, with the
active participation of Commissioner Vassiliou, and representatives
of the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the
Council of Europe, the EIB Institute, the EEA Funding Mechanism
and INTO. There was a consensus that various European partners,
public and private, should work closer together to save Europe’s
heritage which continuously faces many threats.

Le succès du Congrès 2013, qui s’est tenu à Athènes et a célébré le Jubilé
d’Europa Nostra, a été rendu possible grâce à la collaboration et au
dévouement de notre délégation nationale en Grèce, Elliniki Etairia, sous
la direction du Vice-président d’Europa Nostra Costa Carras. Un précieux
soutien financier a été reçu de la part d’un large éventail d’organismes
publics et privés en Grèce, permettant ainsi l’élaboration d’un programme
des plus variés et attrayants. Le Congrès et la Cérémonie de remise des

SELECTION OF OTHER NETWORK ACTIVITIES:
A public debate entitled ‘For the Renaissance of Europe’s cultural
and natural heritage’ took place on 15 March at the UNESCO Regional
Office in Venice. The renowned Italian art critic, TV presentator and
Professor Philippe Daverio made an inspiring introductory speech
followed by contributions of European and Italian representatives of
public and private bodies concerned with heritage.
■ From 19 to 21 September, ‘The Best in Heritage’ conference, was
held in partnership with Europa Nostra in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and
marked the launch of the Global Heritage Forum, jointly convened
by Europa Nostra and the International National Trusts Organisation.
■ The Exponatec Cologne, one of Europe’s most important trade fairs
for the museum, conservation and restoration sectors, took place
from 20 to 22 November in Cologne, Germany. On 21 November,
Europa Nostra Deutschland, the German Foundation for Monument
Protection and the German Castles Association organised a colloquium
about the limits of public monuments protection and the necessity
for public bodies to cooperate closely with private stakeholders.

ET BIEN D’AUTRES ACTIVITÉS DE RÉSEAU, TELLES QUE :
Le débat public « Pour la Renaissance du patrimoine culturel et
naturel de l’Europe » s’est déroulé le 15 mars au Bureau régional de
l’UNESCO à Venise. Le critique d’art italien, présentateur TV et
professeur Philippe Daverio, personnage très médiatique en Italie,
a prononcé un discours d’introduction inspirant, et plusieurs
représentants européens et italiens des organismes publics et
privés concernés ont contribué à la discussion.
■ La conférence « The Best in Heritage », organisée en partenariat avec
Europa Nostra à Dubrovnik, en Croatie, du 19 au 21 septembre, a
marqué le lancement du « Global Heritage Forum ». Cette rencontre
au sommet a été organisée conjointement par Europa Nostra et

The renowned Italian writer Claudio Magris received from the President of the Portuguese Republic Anibal Cavaco Silva the
very first European Award for Raising Public Awareness on Cultural Heritage, named after the late Portuguese journalist,
cultural activist and politician Helena Vaz da Silva. This new Award was instituted by Centro Nacional de Cultura in
cooperation with Europa Nostra. The award ceremony was held at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (21/10). | L’écrivain
italien renommé, Claudio Magris, a reçu de la part du Président de la République portugaise, Anibal Cavaco Silva, le tout
premier Prix européen pour la sensibilisation du public au patrimoine culturel dont le nom rend hommage à la journaliste
portugaise, activiste culturelle et femme politique feue Helena Vaz da Silva. Le Prix a été créé par le Centro Nacional de
Cultura en collaboration avec Europa Nostra. La remise du Prix a eu lieu à la Fondation Gulbenkian à Lisbonne (21/10).

A growing number of Country Representations has been, or is in the process of being
established to represent and promote the interests of Europa Nostra in individual
countries. They seek to ensure the best possible two-way communication
between members in their country and Europa Nostra’s main decision-making
bodies and the International Secretariat in The Hague and in Brussels. Country
representations provide valuable support to the various aspects of Europa Nostra’s
work (Policy matters, Heritage in Danger, Heritage Awards) and they contribute to
an increased visibility of Europa Nostra through effective membership drives,
successful fundraising efforts, and by organising local Europa Nostra events
(lectures, debates, local award ceremonies, visits).

Nous avons un réseau croissant de délégations nationales (existantes ou en cours de
formation) qui ont la tâche de représenter et de promouvoir les intérêts d’Europa Nostra
dans leur propre pays. Elles s’emploient à assurer une communication efficace entre
les membres d’Europa Nostra qui sont basés dans leur pays et les principaux organes
décisionnels d’Europa Nostra ainsi qu’avec notre Secrétariat international à La Haye et
à Bruxelles. Les délégations nationales apportent leur soutien précieux aux différentes
activités d’Europa Nostra (questions relatives aux politiques européennes, patrimoine
en danger, Prix) et contribuent à l’accroissement de notre visibilité en recrutant de

On the occasion of Europa Nostra’s 50th anniversary, the Belgium-based rose hybridizer and grower ‘Rosa Mundo’ decided to honour the mission of Europa Nostra and support its action
towards saving Europe’s most threatened monuments and sites with the launch of the ‘Rosa Europa Nostra’. The ‘Rosa Europa Nostra’ is a perfect addition to any garden, it has an average
height of 140 cm and continued flowering; it has the pleasant fragrance of wild roses and is easy to care for. The rose can be ordered online and delivered anywhere in Europe. For the sale
of every rose, which costs v 22,50, Rosa Mundo is making a donation of v 9 to Europa Nostra. ‘Rosa Europa Nostra’ is therefore an imaginative and most welcome tool of crowd-funding.

Europa Nostra’s vibrant Jubilee year 2013, a celebration of its 50th
anniversary, ended with a modest positive financial result. An
unprecedented level of activities has been achieved, for the financing
of which we were able to substantially raise our total income in
comparison to 2012 (over Euro 267.000). Total expenditure for all
activities in 2013 increased by over Euro 100.000 compared to cost of
activities in 2012, however general expenses did not grow, thanks to
very rigid cost control and an improved activities/overhead ratio.

The positive financial result for the year 2013 of 78.900 Euro stems
mainly from the successful fundraising activities by Elliniki Etairia,
our Greek co-organiser for the annual Congress and Awards
Ceremony in June 2013 in Athens. Europa Nostra decided in advance
that any money raised in Greece would not be used for activities
elsewhere in Europe. In other words, a surplus, if any, would be used
only for future Europa Nostra activities taking place in Greece. To
that effect, a designated reserve for future activities in Greece has
been created in our balance sheet, which shows that Euro 65.504
from the surplus is still available for these activities, the specifics of
which Europa Nostra will decide and on which Elliniki Etairia - acting
on behalf of Europa Nostra - will keep due records.
The income from annual membership fees declined in 2013, which
is a worrying trend. In the course of 2014, the International
Secretariat will develop action plans to further update the membership administration and to recruit new members with the help of
Board and Council Members. A positive development is that
donations by Individual Members, Organisations and Foundations as
well as by President’s Circle Members increased in 2013.
In the past, due to the fact that the Awards Scheme programme,
executed in partnership with the European Union, was only partly
(60%) funded by the EC, an Awards Scheme Fund was created in our
balance sheet. In recent years, this fund became negative, due to the
insufficient amount of funding raised annually to cover the remaining
40% of the Awards Scheme budget. In the course of 2013, the Board
decided to discontinue this practice, because it is not realistic to
presume that fundraising for future years will ever be able to cover

the Awards Scheme’s deficits from previous years. As a result, our
General Reserve at the end of 2013 decreased, now amounting to
Euro 123.312. This gives a more realistic picture of our overall
financial position. The Board is fully committed to structurally
improving the situation, in line with the recommendations made by
the Council, the Audit Committee and the General Assembly. For
the first time in 2013, we have invited the Audit Committee to our
annual meeting with the external auditors KPMG, which was
appreciated by both KPMG and the Audit Committee.
The augmented visibility and reputation of Europa Nostra created in
2013 - thanks to the impressive Congress and Awards Ceremony in
Athens, the launch of “The 7 Most Endangered” in partnership with
the European Investment Bank Institute, and as well as our active
involvement in the “New Narrative for Europe” initiative and our
coordinating role in the European cooperation project “Cultural
Heritage counts for Europe” - places us in the best possible position
for future fundraising, new EC grant applications and membership
recruitment activities.
Our sincere gratitude goes in particular to our small, dedicated staff
led by our Secretary General, our loyal members and volunteers, our
country representations, and to our partners and donors. Thank you
all for your dedication, expertise, time and support. The future
continues to be challenging; together we have great potential, to be
deployed with enthusiasm for Europe and its cultural heritage.

Le revenu des cotisations annuelles de nos membres a diminué en
2013, ce qui est une tendance inquiétante. Au cours de l’année 2014,
le Secrétariat international a l’intention d’élaborer des plans d’action
pour améliorer la gestion des adhésions, et aussi pour recruter de
nouveaux membres avec l’aide de membres du Comité exécutif et du
Conseil. Une évolution positive est que les dons provenant des membres
individuels, d’associations et de fondations, ainsi que de membres du
Cercle du Président, ont augmenté en 2013.
Dans le passé, en réponse au fait que le programme des Prix, exécuté
en partenariat avec l’Union européenne, n’était que partiellement
(60%) financé par la CE, un fonds destiné au programme des Prix a
été créé dans notre bilan. Au cours des dernières années, ce fonds est

La visibilité et la réputation d’Europa Nostra ont continué à croître
en 2013 – grâce à l’impressionnante Cérémonie de remise des Prix et
au Congrès à Athènes, au lancement du programme des « 7 sites les
plus menacés » en partenariat avec l’Institut de la Banque européenne
d’investissement, ainsi qu’à notre participation active dans le
« Nouveau récit pour l’Europe » et notre rôle de coordinateur dans le
projet de coopération européenne « Le Patrimoine culturel compte
pour l’Europe ». Un tel résultat nous met en excellente position
pour mener avec succès de futures récoltes de fonds, de nouvelles
demandes de subventions de la CE et diverses activités de recrutement
de membres.

Le résultat financier positif de 78.900 euros pour l’année 2013 provient
en grande partie des activités de récolte de fonds, menées avec succès
par nos collègues grecs d’Elliniki Etairia ayant co-organisé notre
Congrès annuel et la Cérémonie de remise des Prix en juin 2013 à
Athènes. Europa Nostra avait décidé à l’avance que tous les fonds
recueillis en Grèce ne seraient pas utilisés pour des activités menées
ailleurs en Europe. En d’autres termes, tout excédent, le cas échéant,
serait utilisé pour les activités futures d’Europa Nostra en Grèce. A
cet effet, une réserve dédiée aux activités futures en Grèce a été
créée dans notre bilan, montrant que les 65.504 euros provenant de
l’excédent sont toujours disponibles pour les activités qu’Europa
Nostra décidera d’organiser dans ce pays et qu’Elliniki Etairia contrôlera
au nom d’Europa Nostra.

L’année 2013, qui fut particulièrement intense pour Europa Nostra en
raison de la célébration de son 50ème anniversaire, s’est conclue par
un résultat financier positif modeste. Un nombre d’activités sans
précédent a été réalisé, pour le financement desquelles nous avons
pu sensiblement augmenter notre revenu total par rapport à 2012
(un peu plus de 267.000 euros de revenu supplémentaire). Les
dépenses totales pour l’ensemble des activités 2013 ont augmenté
d’un peu plus de 100.000 euros par rapport au coût des activités
2012, mais les frais généraux n’ont pas augmenté grâce au contrôle
strict des coûts et grâce à un meilleur rapport activités/frais généraux.

From May 2013 to May 2014, the International Secretariat has worked
on the preparation of Europa Nostra’s Annual Congress in Vienna.
De mai 2013 à mai 2014, le Secrétariat international a travaillé sur la
préparation du Congrès annuel d’Europa Nostra à Vienne
Thanks to the dedication of our International Secretariat in The Hague
and Brussels, as well as of our committed team in Vienna led by our
Council member Alexander Kottulinsky, Europa Nostra has prepared a
most interesting Congress programme from 2-6 May in Austria.
The Congress, under the patronage of the Federal President of
Austria, Heinz Fischer, will include a General Assembly and a paneldiscussion on the “New Narrative for Europe” at Dorotheum (4 May)
and will culminate with the European Heritage Awards Ceremony at
the Burgtheater (5 May). The Ceremony will be co-hosted by EU
Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou and Plácido Domingo, President of
Europa Nostra. The traditional industrial heritage visit will be organised
by Europa Nostra’s Industrial and Engineering Heritage Committee
IEHC. The post-congress excursion to the Wachau Valley, UNESCO
World Heritage Site, was organised by Europa Nostra Austria with the
kind support of the Land Lower Austria, the Danube University in
Krems, the Melk Monastery and the City of Krems. The 2014 Congress
is supported by the Federal Ministry for the Arts and Culture and by
other public and private bodies from Austria.
Grâce au dévouement de notre Secrétariat international de La Haye,
notre Bureau de Bruxelles, ainsi que notre équipe à Vienne, avec en
tête notre membre du Conseil, Alexander Kottulinsky, Europa Nostra a
élaboré un programme des plus intéressants pour le Congrès qui se
tiendra du 2 au 6 mai en Autriche. Le Congrès qui bénéficie du haut
patronage du Président fédéral de la République d’Autriche, Heinz
Fischer, comprendra une Assemblée générale et une table ronde sur le
« Nouveau récit pour l’Europe » au Dorotheum (4 mai) et se conclura
par la Cérémonie européenne de remise des Prix du patrimoine culturel
au Burgtheater (5 mai). La cérémonie sera présidée par la Commissaire
européenne Androulla Vassiliou et Plácido Domingo, Président d’Europa
Nostra. Notre Comité pour le patrimoine industriel et d’ingénierie va
aussi organiser, comme pendant les Congrès précédents, des visites du
patrimoine industriel à Vienne. L’excursion post-Congrès dans la

été organisée par Europa Nostra Autriche avec l’aimable soutien de
la région de Basse-Autriche, l’Université du Danube à Krems, le

le ministère fédéral des arts et de la culture, et par d’autres organismes
publics et privés en Autriche.
