Exemplar for internal assessment resource 2.2A German for Achievement Standard 91125
Exemplar for Internal Assessment Resource
German Level 2
Resource title: Love is in the air
This exemplar supports assessment against:
Achievement Standard 91125
Give a spoken presentation in German that communicates
information, ideas and opinions
Student and grade boundary specific exemplar
The material has been gathered from student material specific to an A or B assessment
resource.
Date version published by
Ministry of Education
December 2011
To support internal assessment from 2012
The resource requires the presentation to last about three minutes. Quality is more important
than length. Some of the sample presentations are nearer two minutes in length but
exemplify the particular borderline at which each student is working.
Some of the sample presentations do not relate directly to the resource Love is in the air but
are included because they exemplify the borderline nature of the presentation.

Grade Boundary: Low Excellence
1.
To achieve Excellence there needs to be development of the information, ideas and
opinions, which is controlled and integrated. The student needs to capably select and
successfully use a range of language and language features that is fit for the purpose
and audience. Communication is not hindered by inconsistencies.
Student 1 has given an outstanding speech. The beginning and ending are exactly fit
for a wedding speech and clearly address the target audience.
Student 1 develops the information about her best friend Mieke, for example, relating
past events they have shared then using these as advice to the new husband Klaus
(such as buying sweets as a way of getting Mieke's approval). She outlines Mieke's
good qualities then uses them as the basis for 'handing over' her friend over to him.
She uses humour effectively (for example, about the dream man who does not match
Klaus in appearance or rugby playing ability).
A wide range of language and language features are successfully used at a level which
is almost of native speaker quality, for example, the tightly controlled use of Sie to
address the audience, du for Mieke or Klaus separately and ihr when wishing them
both well. Imperfect and perfect tenses are capably selected and expertly used
depending on whether she is talking about more distant or more recent events.
Complex verb forms such as Ich erinnere mich an den Tag... or bestens zueinander
and expressions such as Tausendsassa give the flavour of a native speaker.
The few inconsistencies such as bei einer neuen Grundschule, hatten wir vielen
Abenteuer, unser Geld auf Süßigkeiten, wie ihr sehen könnte do not hinder
communication. A German equivalent might have been found or explained for the New
Zealand word 'gully.' At 2:40 minutes, it is short of the required length.
Overall the content of the presentation is already clearly at Excellence level. To reach
more secure Excellence, the presentation would need to reach the required length.

Grade Boundary: High Merit
2.
To achieve Merit, there needs to be development of the information, ideas and
opinions, which is generally credible and connected. The student needs to select and
use a range of language and language features that are fit for purpose and audience.
Communication is not significantly hindered by inconsistencies.
Student 2 develops the content of her presentation and integrates each section with the
next. Anecdotes, such as how they met at high school and were biology partners, are
related to Nora's future career as a vet, which in turn leads into how she met her
husband when he brought his dog to the vet practice.
Student 2 does not show the even, confident rhythm patterns of Students 1 or 3 and at
times her words are unclear. In some places she almost stumbles or hesitates, but in
other places she is remarkably fluent for Level 7, to the level of Excellence.
Student 2 uses complex sentences with a range of connectives such as wie, danach,
entweder...oder, sondern...auch. Her presentation shows confident and convincing use
of genders eine echte Freundin, meine Biologiepartnerin, Tierärztin, reflexive, perfect,
imperfect and conditional verb forms, superlatives and adjective endings. The speech
shows convincing use of typical German 'filler' words such as aber, which could be
indicative of Excellence.
There are inconsistencies such as und sie gab mir Deutschnachhilfe, die besten Notts
[Noten] gehabt, eine Tierärztin geworden, Arbeitszimmer [Praxis] but they do not
significantly hinder communication. The presentation begins appropriately for a
wedding speech Guten Abend meine Damen und Herren but the ending is weak and
the speech just stops after wishing the couple happiness and many children.
For the presentation to move into Excellence, Student 2 would need to sustain a more
even delivery speed and clearer audibility to support her Excellence level development
and integration of content. By speaking more slowly and clearly she could also
lengthen the presentation from the current 2:10 minutes to the required three minutes.
A more powerful ending would also ensure the presentation is more fit for the purpose
and audience.

Grade Boundary: Low Merit
3.
To achieve Merit, there needs to be development of the information, ideas and
opinions, which is generally credible and connected. The student needs to select and
use a range of language and language features that are fit for purpose and audience.
Communication is not significantly hindered by inconsistencies.
Student 3 begins and ends his wedding speech in a manner perfectly suited to the
purpose: Meine sehr geehrte Damen un Herren! ... Und nun trinken wir! Zum Wohl! He
tells in some detail how his friend Hans met the new wife Carla while working in a fast
food restaurant, and recounts an embarrassing episode in Auckland. The information is
developed and the episodes are connected by features such as deswegen, und nun...
A range of language is capably selected and successfully used such as perfect and
imperfect tenses, conditional form wäre er Carla nie begegnet and word order. The
repeated humorous phrase dessen Name ich aber nicht sagen möchte is especially
fitting for the audience at a wedding.
There are inconsistencies such as erste Mal, dann instead of denn, aber wenn Hans
dort nie gearbeiteten hätte..., hat mir gefragt, ob er die neue Kellnerin zum Essen
einladen sollen... , wenn sie nur zu McDonalds gegangen sind, wollte Carla Hans
wiedersehen... , ... über ihm erzählen... but they do not significantly hinder
communication. The pronunciation of schrecklich is not entirely successful. At 2:03
minutes, the presentation is well short of the required length.
For the presentation to move more securely into Merit, there would need to be more
substance and development, such as his friend's qualities, or any implications of the
Auckland incident. Such development could also bring the presentation up to the
required length.

Grade Boundary: High Achieved
4.
To achieve this standard, the student needs to communicate information and express
and justify ideas and opinions in culturally appropriate spoken German. Communication
is achieved overall despite inconsistencies.
This presentation was not originally designed as a wedding speech, but as a
presentation about 'A person whom I admire.' However, because it covers similar
requirements to Resource 2.2A, it exemplifies the requirements of the standard for the
spoken presentation as well as the borderline nature of the Achieved grade.
Student 4 introduces the German footballer Michael Ballach, whom she admires. She
covers his life events, appearance and personality, successes, family and the
generosity of his charity donations. Her opinion in each section is supported by
information and ideas mostly credibly expressed.
Student 4 has successfully used a range of language and language features: verb
forms with perfect hat getragen, imperfect wohnte, begann, studierte, schoss and
conditional ich würde, wir würden, relatives after Ballach,der..., Frau, die ... , Kinder,
die... , superlative der tollste Fußballer, genitive der tollste Fußballer der Welt, Mitglied
vieler Fußballmannschaften, and connectives with matching word order als, wenn, weil,
aber, denn, um...zu, nicht nur...sondern auch. Most adjective endings are successful,
even with multiple adjectives Sein erstes berühmtes Tor, and sentences are
constructed in a range of ways with successful word order: Mit 7 Jahren begann er... ,
Meiner Meinung nach ist er... ,Zum Beispiel studierte er..., um ein Autogramm bitten.
There are inconsistencies such as in the use of articles einer fleißiger Mann,
prepositions in Oktober, in die Englisch..., auf der Universität, Verhältnis mit. Some
words are not selected successfully er muss sehr trainiert sein and some compound
nouns are put together awkwardly die Chemnitz-Mannschaft, die EnglischFußballmannschaft, Sporttrainieren. None of these inconsistencies significantly hinder
communication. A greater threat to communication comes from the mispronunciation of
some vowel sounds jünger, kurze, für, Universität, Persönlichkeit, kämpft, würde, ei/ie
Mitglied, verdient, and influence from English Familie, Organisation. Three sections
could not be understood: he is rich but has..., we would practise football for... , I felt ...?
To move into Merit, Student 4 could use this speech as the basis for her wedding
speech. She would need to create a beginning and ending that were fit for the
audience of friend and family. By minimising the inconsistencies, it could be seen that
the range of language and language features that she has selected and used consist of
generally credible German.

Grade Boundary: Low Achieved
5.
To achieve this standard, the student needs to communicate information and express
and justify ideas and opinions in culturally appropriate spoken German. Communication
is achieved overall despite inconsistencies.
Student 5 begins his wedding speech with the appropriate greeting Sehr geehrete
Damen und Herren and introduction, then gives information about his friendship with
James. He communicates information about how James and he have been friends
since they were in the same class, and they have the same birthday. These facts are
neither developed nor connected to other parts of the speech. Then he tells how James
had a dog who died after four years and James cried, a fact that is connected to the
next information about Jessie the new bride: Jetzt weinet er nicht mehr, weil er Jessie
geheiratet hat. Further facts about James' abilities lead on without connection to wishes
for their future and many babies, as James would be a good father. The speech stops
abruptly here.
Student 5 correctly uses future, perfect and imperfect tenses, some appropriate
connectives with matching word order such as Am Anfang gab es keine
Freundschaft..., Überraschend haben wir am gleichen Tag Geburtstag.
There are inconsistencies of pronunciation in words such as wie, weil, ge/weinet,
traurig, Zeit and some language features typical of Level 7 are attempted
unsuccessfully, such as prepositions seit unser Kindheit, relatives ein Bruder, das ich
nie..., nouns and separable verbs ... die gleichen interessant und sie sehen glücklich
aus zusammen. Communication is achieved overall despite these.
To demonstrate more securely that Student 5 is working at Achieved level, he would
need to minimise the inconsistencies in language use, organise the information to
justify his ideas and opinions, develop some of the statements, and create a more
powerful ending. This could enable him to extend the current 2:04 minutes to the
required length of about three minutes.

Grade Boundary: High Not Achieved
6.
To achieve this standard, the student needs to communicate information and express
and justify ideas and opinions in culturally appropriate spoken German. Communication
is achieved overall despite inconsistencies.
In her presentation, Student 6 lists a series of unconnected facts about her best friend
Stephanie, with little development. She does cover some of the suggested points, such
as a description, her qualities and two facts about her childhood, but these are not
used to justify or support any other information.
The presentation successfully uses some imperfect tense sammelte, spielte, a relative
der Chris heißt, connectives dass, als, weil , some correct word order Jeden Tag bringt
Steph mich... , Ich fahre nächstes Jahr mir Steph... and some language typical of Level
7 hat sie Streit mit ihren Eltern.
There are inconsistencies in language typical of Levels 4 to 6, such as verb endings,
connectives als sie supercool ist, deshalb manchmal sie ist..., and simple expressions
such as weil sie viel Spaß hat. Incorrect pronunciation of einen Bruder and wäre make
communication difficult, and some sections do not make sense sie ist sehr herrsch (?),
mich mit ihrem Z... (?), manchmal wenn er sie Zimmer, Steph G. sehr wichtig sind.
Overall it is border line that Student 6 is working above Level 6. The delivery speed of
the presentation is disrupted by long pauses and what follows does not always
connect.
