ZAGREB, YUGOSLAVIA, GREGORIJANCEVA 38 TRENDS IN THE CONTENT OF HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS IN THE UNITED STATES MYRON F. ROSSKOPF During the nineteenth century the teaching of mathematics in the high schools of the United States was greatly influenced by German practices, and high school textbooks followed their English counterparts. However, the organization of the mathematics courses in high schools developed along quite independent lines. The separation of organization and methods of teaching from European influences has been particularly sharp since 1900. The educational program of the high schools developed in the twentieth century under the influence of researches in educational psychology, the growth of the organization of labor in the United States, and the impact of John Dewey's philosophy of education. Each of these three disparate influences had its effect on the schools. Committees representative of colleges, universities, and secondary schools studied the mathematics program of the high schools. The reports of these committees recommended a grade placement of topics. Since teacher training institutions and textbook authors followed the recommendations of the committees, there was fastened on the high schools a rigid sequence of topics in mathematics. At present a mild revolt is taking place among United States teachers of mathematics. On the one hand, teachers are dissatisfied with the traditional organization of the present mathematics program. On the other hand, there are a few leaders who would like to replace the classical approach to certain topics in mathematics by a contemporary approach to these topics; this procedure implies a complete reorganization of the mathematics program of the secondary school. Less emphasis is being placed on developing mathematical skills; more 424 emphasis than earlier is being placed on teaching for meaning and understanding of mathematical processes. TEACHERS COLLEGE, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, U.S.A. BIELEFELD, BANDELSTRASS 3. 425
