Welcome / Bienvenue
Dear friends and colleagues,
Chers amis et collègues,
Located between majestic mountains and the expanse of
the Pacific Ocean, the city of Vancouver is one of Canada’s
most beautiful maritime settings. As the linchpin of Canada’s
Pacific Gateway, Vancouver plays a vital role in the country’s
overall economic strategy. As marine pilots, whose role it is to
safeguard the marine environment and the efficient transit of
goods and people, it is appropriate that we should assemble
in this remarkable city.
Située entre de majestueuses montagnes et l’étendue de
l’océan Pacifique, la ville de Vancouver s’avère un des milieux
maritimes les plus enchanteurs du Canada. En tant que
composante essentielle de la Porte d’entrée du Pacifique,
Vancouver joue un rôle clé dans la stratégie économique du
pays et il est tout-à-fait approprié que les pilotes maritimes
qui, de par leur rôle, contribuent à la fois à la protection de
l’environnement et à l’efficacité du transport des biens et

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the
Second Congress of the Canadian Marine Pilots’ Association. Given the importance
of collaboration in attaining common objectives, it is our hope that you will take this
opportunity to meet with the other members of Canada’s marine community, as well as
our guests from abroad. The exchange of views, ideas and experiences will undoubtedly
make for a week of rich discussions. We are also delighted to have so many respected
panelists to share their perspectives on topics important to marine transportation.

Bienvenue
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my
warmest greetings to the organizers and delegates of the
Second Congress of the Canadian Marine Pilots’ Association.
Considering Vancouver’s fundamental role as the country’s
Pacific Gateway, it is appropriate that this event should take
place here, in one of Canada’s most enchanting maritime
settings.
The theme of this Congress – An Integrated Marine Community – reflects values that
the Government of Canada shares. Our vision is to foster collaboration among marine
stakeholders so as to ensure that Canada’s marine transportation system is recognized
as one of the safest and most efficient in the world. Delegates at this conference are
demonstrating the merits of such close collaboration and I am sure their discussions will
contribute to advance these objectives we all share.

On behalf of the residents of Vancouver, I welcome you to the
Second Congress of the Canadian Marine Pilots’ Association.
As the gateway to Asia-Pacific, and a city defined by a rich
maritime history, Vancouver is honoured to host you.
Vancouver’s natural beauty and marine life are prized by our
residents and we owe much to the marine pilots for their
contribution to protecting these areas through their expertise
and skill. Across the country, marine pilots contribute daily
to our economic and environmental vibrancy and are valued
members of the marine community.
This gathering represents a unique and exciting opportunity for
Canada’s marine community to meet, along with representatives
from other jurisdictions, to discuss ways of furthering collaboration
– a critical component for both safety and efficiency in marine
transportation.
In recent years, British Columbia has been proud to be at the fore of such collaborative efforts as the
province expanded its Pacific Gateway vision and initiatives. The marine component, including the
important role played by marine pilots, is vital to the Gateway’s success, and I look forward to hearing
the output of your discussions on an integrated marine community.
I am very pleased to welcome the marine pilots and their guests to British Columbia, and I wish you
the very best in your deliberations.

contributions that marine pilots make to the West Coast’s vibrancy
