Get the Blessing, Chlorine Free & Soweto Kinch. For almost twenty-five years, history of jazz in Dudelange is written and rewritten in terms of live concerts. It realizes itself in the present and keeps a living account of collective musical memory. The reputation of Dudelange as Luxembourg’s City of Jazz is firmly established by now. By crea ting the festival “Like a Jazz Machine” in 2012, the founders have started a powerful generator of energies, visions and jazz moods. Relying on their ultimate commitment to jazz, the CCRD opderschmelz and the cultural department of the City have amplified their efforts in the third edition of their international jazz festival by organizing with refueled fervor an impressing common platform for the artists, the public, the professionals and cultural workers, as well as the associations and societies interested in partnership. After the big success of the previous two editions, “Like a Jazz Machine” 2014 offers an even wider range of the actual currents in contemporary jazz, by highlighting original creations and young talents, as well as focusing on cross-border incursions in other musical genres and styles. 17 bands and ensembles, assembling 78 musicians, are going to share the stage of the CCRD opderschmelz during a period of four consecutive days. The performances will be of generous length, so that the artists are given great opportunity to present their live shows with all the intensity and sheer power of their underlying visions and concepts. While honouring the achievements of the big names and living legends of jazz, such as Joachim Kühn, Daniel Humair, John Taylor or Billy Cobham, the program of the festival also features remarkable artists experimenting new music trends, such as Arve Henriksen, Jan Bang, Sylvain Rifflet, Stéphane Kerecki, Mark Turner, as well as emerging talents and prize-winning young artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Marius Neset, Giovanni Guidi, Gianluca Petrella, Céline Bonacina. A lot of emphasis is deservedly given to Jazz from Luxembourg which more than ever is in full swing not only in this country but also on the international scale. The most brilliant musicians of Luxembourgish origins and residents of the country prepare themselves to take giant steps during the festival, either in trio (Michel Reis, David Laborier, Marc Mangen) or in big bands (The Grand Cosmic Journey, Rubrica Art Ensemble). And finally, the festival also partakes in its own cause of ce lebration and wants to have a party with its public during the late hours, in the company of such steaming hot jazz squads as the bands of Lakecia Benjamin, Get the Blessing, Chlorine Free & Soweto Kinch. Throughout the event, in a spirit of exchange and convivia lity, creations and encounters are to take place around the convergence of various cultures, generations and styles in a large melting pot. “Like a Jazz Machine” is an urban festival for all ages, worthy of a big city’s renown, dedicated to enhance various moods and keep on turning the resourceful machineries of today’s jazz all over the city of Dudelange, the whole of Luxembourg and the large European borderland. David Laborier founded his trio in 2003 and recorded his first original album titled “David Laborier Trio”. Thanks to regular performances with various formations and top bills such as the Orchestre National de Jazz Luxembourg (ONJL) with George Duke, Randy Brecker a.o. He has made a name for himself as a great new talent in jazz guitar. Laborier’s second album “Tease” is a highly individual musical statement made up of fusion, cool and modern jazz. His third and latest solo album “Ye Ole Truckstop” features a strong group sound, heavily influenced by the ‘70’s rock music. Considered early on as a successor to the great Eric Dolphy, Michel Pilz has dedicated his career exclusively to the mastery of the bass clarinet. The great Norwegian trumpet player has made his marks in the famous group Supersilent, and with his distinctive solo work. Henriksen’s fascination for the meditative and expressive quality of the Japanese shakuhachi flute had him work in a new direction. The musical spheres of Jan Bang revolve around such luminaries as Jon Hassell, David Sylvian, Nils Petter Molvaer. His pioneering work in developing the concept of live remiximprovising with electronics makes him a dream partner for innovative projects. Stian Westerhus is a guitarist with an enviable technique and a vast creative imagination. Ingar Zach is one of the leading percussionists from Norway, known for the wide range of sounds he uses. Pianist and composer Michel Reis started his musical training at an early age. He began studying at the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, and moved to Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. Reis studied, worked and performed a.o. with Joe Lovano, Danilo Perez, Dave Holland, Esperanza Spalding. As a leader he released four albums: A Young Mind (2005), Fairytale (2009), Point of No Return (2011) and Hidden Meaning (2012). Currently based in New York City, Michel Reis has performed in many of the world’s most famous jazz clubs and festivals, including the Blue Note Jazz Club, the Knitting Factory, the Panama Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival. “A very exceptional pianist and composer” Joe Lovano “A musician of outstanding talent, discipline and seriousness.” Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is a forward-thinking musician with a bent toward atmospheric post-bob. In 2007 Akinmusire won the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition and the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. He was named Rising Star Jazz Artist and Rising Star Trumpet in Down Beat Magazine’s 2011 Critics Poll, graduating to Trumpet Player of the Year in 2012. He was awarded Germany’s ECHO Award as Instrumentalist of the Year. Akinmusire has already staked his place at the vanguard of jazz and artistic expression and is considered one of the most exciting young jazz musicians in the world. » Télérama “The brightest beacon on the trumpet, the sharpest in a few decades” Billboard “A fiercely gifted young trumpeter” New York Times AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE, trumpet MARK TURNER, tenor saxophone SAM HARRIS, piano, Fender Rhodes HARISH RAGHAVAN, double bass JUSTIN BROWN, drums © Elizabeth Leitzell LAKECIA BENJAMIN AND SOUL SQUAD 23h00, Grand Auditoire La toute jeune Lakecia Benjamin a déjà collaboré avec Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys et Blitz The Ambassador. Charismatic and dynamic young saxophonist/bandleader Lakecia Benjamin, who has played with Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots and Macy Gray, but also with jazz greats such as Clark Terry, David Murray and Reggie Workman, has taken center stage in her own right with the release of her unconventional soul/ funk album “Retox”, on which she shows off her jazz skills with an ingeniously arranged mix of original old school soul and funk songs. “I call my band Soul Squad because, even as a kid, I always wanted to play like I was in an army of funky musicians,” says Benjamin. Immersed in the vintage sounds of James Brown, Maceo Parker, Curtis Mayfield, Sly and the Family Stone, the Meters, as well as classic jazz, Benjamin’s soaring, dance floor-friendly grooves take the classic vibe to a whole new level. “Each song feels like it is a stand alone artistic masterpiece. This album ‘Retox,’ very much has the feel of what Black radio should sound like today.” Marc Mangen is a pianist of international reputation, working in the field of jazz as well as in Funk and Fusion. His very personal style is based upon tradition, but also strongly shaped by his constant research on new harmonic and melodic possibilities. He received his musical education in the conservatories of Luxembourg and Strasbourg. In 1986 and 1994 he toured with former Mingus trumpet player Ted Curson. He plays regularly in trio with changing rhythm sections. He has been invited to several important jazz festivals: Gaume Jazz Festival in 1986 and 1999; Strasbourg 1989; Jazz im Brunnenhof (Trier) 1998, 2000, 2002; Weimar 1998; Jazz au Chardon/Fallais 1998; Jazz Clervaux 2001 and 2002. Marc Mangen has played concerts all over the world. He composes modern classical music and jazz tunes, as well as longer compositions for jazz bands. He is also a commissioned composer for other bands. In a very short time, Marius Neset has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting young jazz talents, one of today’s most talked-about saxophonists since the release of his premier album “Golden Xplosion”. The recent, even more ambitious followup “Birds”, offered confirmation of the arrival of a phenomenal talent. His soprano solos of extraordinary power and inventiveness are topped only by his adventurous tenor playing. Neset is a brilliant technician with a high degree of musical intelligence behind his dazzling displays of instrumental prowess. Stéphane Kerecki made a name for himself by playing with Daniel Humair, Sheila Jordan, Michel Portal, Jacky Terrasson. He is leading his own trio, with saxophonist Matthieu Donarier and drummer Thomas Grimmonprez. His recordings received many awards, including the Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros, Disque d’Emoi de l’année 2007 (Jazz Magazine), Choc du Monde de la Musique a.o. Kerecki’s most ambitious project to date, “Nouvelle Vague”, an homage to the movies of Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Louis Malle, Jacques Demy, and the music it generated, features re-adapted works by Miles Davis, Martial Solal, Georges Delerue, Antoine Duhamel and Michel Legrand. Through the years, drummer Benoit Martiny developed with his bandmates an original musical style influenced by the mid-1960s. The Benoît Martiny Band was First Prize Winner of the 2008 Amersfoort Jazz Talent Award, and has been performing in many different venues in large parts of Europe. Powered by the internationally recognized musical talents of clarinetist Michel Pilz, saxophonist Roby Glod and keyboardist Leon den Engelsen, The Grand Cosmic Journey extends the Benoit Martiny Band experience. The project is an attempt to revisit these golden years where music broke the boundaries of art and cultures imagined by the most innovative composers and sound designers of these last decades, such as Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Jimi Hendrix, Hermeto Pascoal and Frank Zappa. One of the most original and exciting bands to emerge in years, Get The Blessing was formed by drummer Clive Deamer and bassist Jim Barr, rhythm section of trip-hop’s legendary band Portishead. Get The Blessing have stormed onto the scene, taking riffs and rhythms from rock, punk and dance music and artfully welding them onto inventive wild jazz improvisations. With trumpeter Pete Judge and saxophonist Jake McMurchie from Superfurry Animals completing the line-up, Get The Blessing’s rocking tunes and snappy arrangements create a genre-bending blend of sounds that is all their own, flirting slyly with jazz while pounding the dancefloor with their “gloriously powerful sound” (BBC Music Magazine). Get The Blessing wear their jazz credentials lightly but defiantly. “Get the Blessing fait le buzz post-jazz. The jazz pianist Giovanni Guidi is well known on Europe’s jazz scene, as a solo performer and a collaborator with celebrated trumpeter Enrico Rava. He has also been a member of Gianluca Petrella’s Cosmic Band, and plays with his own quartet to great acclaim. In 2010, he released his debut big-band offering, The Unknown Rebel Band. Gianluca Petrella is internationally considered one of the best young jazz trombonists. In 2001 he won Italy’s Django d’Or Award as well as Musica Jazz’s annual critics poll as Best Young Talent. In 2006 and 2007 he was featured in Down Beat magazine as “Best Emerging Artist” in the category for Best Trombonist. Céline studied music at the “conservatoires” in Belfort, Besançon and Paris, then specialised in baritone saxophone and played in big bands from 1996 to 1998. In 2005, she released her first album, « Vue d’en haut ». Her compositions, interpreted with baritone, alto and soprano saxophones, are universally praised in the press. With her 2010 album “Way of Life”, Bonacina had an impressive debut on ACT featuring Nguyên Lê as a guest. Her new album “Open Heart” was released in 2013. She performs most often in trio, but also in quartet, quintet or sextet in many festivals in France and abroad. Recently she has played in concert with a.o. Leszek Mozder, Wolfgang Haffner, Michel Benita, Gwilym Simcock. Joachim Kühn is one of the great piano virtuosos of our time. His playing defies all categorization, and has earned him a place as a world class musician. He has already left his mark on contemporary jazz and given it a new direction. He displays vehemence and sensibility, a virtuoso technique and imagination and an unfailing sense of dynamics. He formed a legendary trio with Jean-François JennyClarke and Daniel Humair and played with such diverse musicians as Don Cherry, Phil Woods, Michel Portal, Billy Cobham, Michael Brecker, Ornette Coleman, Albert Mangelsdorff, Joe Lovano. Be it in his interaction with long-time musical partners such as Daniel Humair, one of the best drummers in the world, or Bruno Chevillon, one of the foremost bassists of the younger generation, in ever new and challenging musical constellations, or alone in his solo performances, Kühn always manages to make his concerts into a unique experience. The French saxophonist, clarinettist and multi-reed player Sylvain Rifflet came to wider public attention with the album Rockingchair fronted by himself and trumpeter Airelle Besson, a critically praised début recording which received the Django d’Or 2008. Rifflet’s new inventive project Alphabet presents an ensemble using electronics, sound manipulation, classical ideals, trance music and jazz. Rifflet’s pieces are hypnotic and inventive sound collages for quartet. This engaging blend of influences ranging from minimalism to art-rock and film scores creates memorable compositions, coming to bright life in the group’s compelling performance on stage. A big newcomer on the national jazz scene, the Rubrica Art Ensemble aims at promoting creative contemporary jazz in Luxembourg, interpreting works by native composers at a high level, and experimenting with the creative resources of improvised music. Of variable geometry and with open structures, this ensemble created in 2013 by Marc Mangen, Maxime Bender and Pol Belardi, has the vocation to interpret music creations by Luxembourg born or resident composers. The cultural center opderschmelz in Dudelange offers the ensemble artistic residence and lasting support and will host its premiere presentation to the public. In the future, the Rubrica Art Ensemble, while maintaining strong bounds with the CCRD opderschmelz, aspires to become a point of convergence for Luxembourg’s jazz composers as well as musicians who want to explore in common a vast creative potential. From one project to another, the ensemble intends to change as to instrumentation and size and give room for great width in the repertory. The alto-saxophonist and MC Soweto Kinch is one of the most exciting young musicians in both the British jazz and hip hop scenes. Generally acclaimed as fusion’s greatest drummer, Billy Cobham’s explosive technique powered some of the genre’s most important early recordings – including groundbreaking efforts by Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra – before he became an accomplished bandleader in his own right. With Mahavishnu, Cobham’s fiery intensity was given its fullest airing yet, and his extraordinary technique influenced countless fusioneer and prog-rock drummers. By the mid-’80s, Cobham was de-emphasizing his own bands in favor of session and sideman work. Even so, he continued to record for various labels with some regularity. At his best, Cobham shows off his amazing dexterity with thundering, high-octane hybrids of jazz complexity and rock & roll aggression. He is capable of subtler, funkier grooves but also awe-inspiring solo improvisations, and his technical virtuosity is overwhelming.
