You’ll stop for dinner in Fernie before the scenic 3-hour drive to Fernie. Upon arrival you’ll meet your lead guide and check in to your room at the Elkview Lodge. Note: dinner is not included in the tour price. Day 2 A first day in Fernie town of 4000 people is surrounded by one of the best mountain bike trail networks in the world. A myriad of shuttle opportunities (using our van) will allow us to do up to 7 trails in this mountain bike paradise. Trails like the 11-mile long ‘Dewdney Trail’ on Record Ridge, 15-mile-long ‘Rubberhead’ (part of the festival course) and the 16-mile-long ‘Smugglers’ help justify this region's claim to be the 'Mountain Bike Capital of Canada'. One ride on any of the trails in Rossland and all will become clear! Our lodge is right in town, located close to all the singletrack! It is also within walking distance of the almost-as-legendary-as-itstrails Rossland nightlife! Day 6 Seven Summits. After a good sleep and hearty breakfast you'll build your bikes and we'll spend the 1st morning working on mountain bike skills with our instrcutors. More advanced riders will work on advanced skills, while less experinced riders will work on intermediate skills. After returning to the lodge for lunch, we'll head up to the Ridgemont area where a huge spiderweb of trails offers up plenty of options for singletrack fun! We'll return to the lodge at around 5:00 pm. Tonight's dinner will be a communal one, as we get to know each other around the kitchen! Day 3 Fun in Fernie After breakfast, we'll ride right from our lodge to the skills park for another morning of instruction. After a full morning of skills work, we'll stop for lunch and fuel up for a big afternoon of biking. We'll head out for another crack at the trails of Fernie, then we'll head back to the lodge for a late afternoon drink on the deck before dinner. Seven Summits is one of the best trails in Canada, and has recently been voted one of the ‘Top 10 trails in the world.’ The trail is an epic – up to 8 hours – and, like the name suggests, we visit 7 mountain tops in the Rossland area. This is alpine singletrack at its absolute best! After a great day’s riding, we’ll head into Rossland for dinner at a local restaurant before returning to our lodge. Day 7 Rest Day in the Kootenays Situated in the Selkirk Mountains, on the shores of Kootenay Lake and overlooking Kokanee Glacier, Nelson is one of the prettiest towns in all of British Columbia. We’ll spend the morning enjoying the sights and sounds of Nelson and have lunch in town before heading to Ainsworth Hot Springs (where you can swim through a cave with 44 degree water) to soak our tired legs. After the hot springs, we’ll drive to our hotel on the shores of Kootenay Lake. Day 8 Sweet Slocan Singletrack Day 4 Rest Day in Fernie After breakfast at the lodge, we'll have an optional morning ride up Dem Bones or another skills session. After returning to the lodge for lunch, you'll have the rest of the day off to explore the wonderful town of Fernie. There are myriad options for outdoor fun in this recreational paradise, including river tubing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, chairlift-assisted riding at Fernie Alpine Resort, fly fishing - you name it! Situated deep in the Slocan Valley, New Denver is the jewel of the Kootenays: a charming mountain town surrounded by massive peaks, on the shore of a spectacular lake. Singletrack surrounds the town on all side, including the awe-inspiring Wakefield trail, from the summit of Idaho Peak and the cruisy Galena Trail, with its cable-car crossings. We’ll spend the day exploring these trails before driving to our lodge in Revelstoke. Day 5 Rubberheads and Smugglers After a scenic 4-hour drive through Kootenay Pass, we arrive at the town of Rossland. This is home to the annual 'Rubberhead' mountain bike festival. It’s time to tackle another epic: the Keystone Standard Basin ride in Revelstoke. This incredible ride is an hour’s drive into the backcountry north of Revelstoke, alongside Lake Revelstoke. The ride itself is 6 hours of sheer alpine bliss: buffed singletrack and jaw-dropping scenery. After the ride, we’ll head back to our lodge for a BBQ dinner. Wichtige Reisedetails Treffpunkt und Transfer Day 10 Revelstoke riding/Roger’s Pass The singletrack on Mt. Macpherson is everything an avid mountain biker could want: challenging climbs, fun downhills, and a huge network to satisfy all levels. After the morning’s ride, we’ll hop in the van for the 90-minute drive to Golden via spectacular Roger’s Pass and the Illicilaweat Glacier. We’ll spend the next 2 nights at our deluxe lodge in the mountains. Day 11 Canyons and Campfires Today we ride in Golden on the ‘Moonraker’ trails. These smooth trails leave right from the campsite and feature spectacular 2000-ft-deep canyon scenery and challenging climbs. There are more trails to explore than you could shake a stick at, with some steeps and technical options for the stronger riders (like ‘Canyon Creek’), and plenty of easier stuff for the more laid-back. Generally the Moonraker Trail series is a network of intermediate level trails on a mix of singletrack and bush riding amongst cedar and fir forest interspersed with meadows, streams and beaver ponds. Again we’ll tailor something for the group but look out for great trails like ‘Moonraker’, ‘Bear Claw’, ‘Cedar Snag’ and ‘Devil’s Slide’! Day 12 Golden grins Definitely a big-grin day with some major vertical descent and technical delights on offer! We'll have breakfast at the camp, load our gear and bikes and then drive to the summit of ‘Mount Seven’, Golden’s premier ride, which rears 1300 metres (4000-ft) up above the Columbia Valley. This is a region of deep valleys and high peaks and includes some good technical riding, ridge rides and long wilderness exploration areas (as well as some mellow valley riding). The ‘Summit Trail’ snakes its way down the mountain, taking in spectacular views of the valley and the Kicking Horse and Columbia rivers as it switchbacks downwards. We'll definitely get the chance for another ride down (or two!) using the van and check out some of the other fantastic descent options on Mount Seven, such as ‘Snake Bite’ which is a fun, luge-style, downhill blast through the forest. When we’re done here we head into Golden for lunch and load up the van for the drive to Kananaskis. We take time out en route with a stopover in the beautiful and world-famous town of Banff. Tonight we’ll stay at a hotel in Canmore. Day 13 The best %*#@^!# trail ever !!! The ‘pot of gold’ ride, this is the incredible, amazing, scintillating and stunning (is that enough adjectives yet?) Jumping Pound / Cox Hill Ride. Rated in several guidebooks as one of the best rides in the whole of North America, this incredible trail will live on in your dreams for years after you ride it! Imagine a challenging, switchbacking, singletrack climb up the side of a mountain, followed by lunch at the top. We then do a ridge ride at 2185 metres (7000-ft) surrounded by the massive Rocky Mountains. But, that’s not all there’s more! Another challenging singletrack climb, then the icing on the cake, 7 kilometres of the most incredibly sweet singletrack, and almost 930 metres (3000-ft) of vertical descent. The standard response after riding this piece of singletrack heaven is "…that was the best %*#@^!# trail I have ever ridden!" – see for yourself! We finish riding in the early afternoon and with huge grins fixed on our faces and a sad tear in our eye, we'll hop in the van for a quick ride back to Calgary. Tonight we stay in a Calgary hotel and celebrate the best riding we’ve ever likely experienced, drink a beer (or two) with our new friends and relive the many, many highlights of a simply fantastic trip. RESPONSIBLE RIDING In 2006, we formulated and instituted a mandate for sustainable tourism entitled Responsible Riding. Based on the belief that mountain biking can make a positive difference in the world, Responsible Riding incorporates the following key elements: 1) All of our staff is local. They come from the communities where we ride and their wages go back into local communities. In British Columbia, all of our guides live full-time in the Fernie area, and their wages go directly back into the community. In Peru, we are working with local guides who are paid the same wages that our Canadian guides earn. This contrasts with many other companies who pay guides subsistence wages (many porters on the Inca trail are paid less than $3/day). 2) We use local suppliers and partners wherever possible. That means never using big box stores, purchasing local food and supplies, working with local sponsors and staying at locally owned campgrounds and hotels. In Peru, we are using local suppliers such as Joselo, who owns and runs a small van transport service. Using local suppliers keeps dollars in the communities where we ride and helps them stay strong and vibrant. 3) A portion of tour costs goes to local development and sustainability projects in the areas where we ride. In British Columbia, 2% of tour costs go to the environmental organization WildSight, which works hard to preserve the natural environment of southeastern British Columbia. In Peru, 2% of the tour price goes directly to local development projects, such as the building of schools or the construction of wells in communities that do not have access to clean water. We visit these communities as we ride and see how these projects are making a difference. 4) We contribute funds and time (e.g. trail-building) to the mountain biking communities in the areas where we ride. Every spring we visit communities such as Nelson and Golden and donate our time to local trail maintenance. We also donate money to their local mountain bike clubs. Food in Canada is naturally of the highest standard and plentiful! Metifex) Schmerztabletten z.B. 5) We have our own non-profit organization, Bicycles Without Borders, that distributes bicycles to families in developing countries. Next May, we will be taking a shipment of bicycles with us when we head to Peru. Bicycles form a vital form of transportation in communities where cars are rare and where distances to schools and other services are often large. If you wish to donate bicycles or money to Bicycles Without Borders, please call our office or visit www.ferniefattire.com/BWB.htm 6) We support local cultural projects and events. In Fernie and other BC communities, we help organize local mountain bike events and festivals. In Peru, we will visit 4 Inca archaeological sites, 3 of which are in remote areas that do not receive much tourism. Paying for entrance admissions and guides to these sites ensures their continued protection. 7) We have a stringent environmental code. We follow IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association) guidelines for reducing trail impact and these guidelines are passed on to our clients. 8) We have implemented a carbon offsets program. This is a relatively new concept aimed at offsetting the carbon emissions generated by business activity by investing in projects that reduce global carbon levels, such as treeplanting programs and renewable energy projects (e.g. wind farms). In 2007, Sacred Rides will be working with ZeroFootprint to calculate the total carbon emissions of its operations and will offset these emissions by investing in an equal amount of carbon offsetting programs. In addition, we will be instituting a voluntary program with our clients, encouraging them to offset the carbon impacts of their flights. We are working to design this program so that it is as easy to use and efficient as possible, thus encouraging its use. To Book your Holiday: Contact your local touroperater.
