After almost a year on the job, I
can’t say that sentiment has changed at all. Just the opposite: I am constantly
amazed at the wealth of potential when it comes to relations - people-topeople, economic, cultural, academic - between Canada and Italy.
On the trade front, we’ve signed a historic agreement-in-principle with the
European Union: the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
Bilateral trade between Canada and Italy is already flourishing, in fact, Italy is
one of Canada’s leading trading partners in the EU. Once CETA comes into
force, these essential economic ties will be further solidified and strengthened,
to the benefit of both of our countries.
There is so much to celebrate when it comes to the Canada-Italy relationship.
And you - Canadians who have made Italy your home and friends of Canada
here in Italy - are at the heart of it all. So thank you, and a very Happy Canada
Day to you all.

This year Canada is represented by an exceptional project entitled “Arctic
Adaptations: Nunavut at 15.” It marks the 15th anniversary of the founding of
Canada’s newest territory, Nunavut, and is a tribute to Canadian innovation
and to the people who inhabit our Northern lands.

Chers Canadiens et amis du Canada,
La dernière fois que je me suis adressé à vous date du mois d’octobre, à
l’occasion de l’Action de Grâce du Canada. Je venais de revenir en Italie en
tant qu’Ambassadeur du Canada (ayant été dans le passé Consul Général
à Milan) et j’exprimais ma reconnaissance d’avoir l’opportunité de travailler
à nouveau ici pour renforcer les déjà étroites relations qui existent entre le
Canada et l’Italie.
Après presque un an de travail, mes sentiments n’ont point changé, au
contraire! Je suis constamment stupéfait de la richesse du potentiel des
relations interpersonnelles, économiques, culturelles et académiques entre le
Canada et l’Italie.
Sur le plan commercial, nous avons signé un accord de principe historique
avec l’Union Européenne: L’Accord économique et commercial global
(AECG). Le commerce bilatéral entre le Canada et l’Italie est déjà florissant et
en effet l’Italie est l’un des partenaires clés au sein de l’UE. Dès que l’AECG
sera en vigueur, ces liens économiques fondamentaux seront d’autant plus
consolidés et renforcés au bénéfice de nos deux pays.
Il y a beaucoup de chose à fêter lorsque l’on parle des relations entre le
Canada et l’Italie et vous, Canadiens qui avez choisi l’Italie et amis du Canada
en Italie, en êtes partie intégrante. Un grand merci alors et Joyeuse Fête du
Canada à vous tous.
Et pour ceux d’entre vous qui désirent vivre un peu de Canada en Italie, ne
manquez pas de visiter le Pavillon du Canada à la Biennale d’architecture
de Venise. Cette année, le Canada est représenté par un projet exceptionnel
intitulé « Arctic Adaptations : Nunavut at 15 » qui marque le 15ème
anniversaire de la fondation du plus récent territoire canadien, le Nunavut et
rend hommage à l’innovation canadienne ainsi qu’au peuple qui habite les
terres du Nord.
