Abstract
The joining of metals with brittle materials like glass or glass-ceramic is usually not possible by
fusion welding. First investigations on ultrasonic-welding showed however, that this welding
technique is appropriate for bonding glass or glass-ceramic with metal without causing a critical
thermal strain in the welding parts. Systematic investigations concerning suitable materials and
the mechanical strength of the joining have scarely been performed. In the present work the
general weld ability, the developed welding zone and the attainable shear strength for different
glass (glass-ceramic)/aluminium-composites and glass (glass-ceramic)/Al-foil/metal-composites
were studied in dependence on important variables like welding time, welding force and welding
amplitude. Temperature measurements in the bonding zone during the welding process with an
infrared camera were correlated with results of microscopic investigations to get more
information's about the mechanisms of bonding. Furthermore it was possible for the first time to
join glasses directly by ultrasonic welding without a filler material.
