CEO’s Message
Team,
The summer period has been very busy for our team at Discovery Air. I continue to be very impressed with every one of
our divisions and the passion and pride that our people feel about their work. Our attention to safety and service really
is second to none. Each of the Discovery Air business units has a unique and refined service to offer. As a team, we
have an incredible wealth of knowledge and expertise to provide customers with truly customized solutions.
One of the things that the Senior Leadership Team has been doing over the past few months has been to focus our
efforts on our core capabilities:
“Providing safe and reliable aviation and logistic services in challenging environments.”
We want to continue to grow, and we want to ensure that our growth is guided by this principle.
In this issue of Flight Plan, you will see how this focus has played out. We have brought a number of new aircraft
online, while continuing to run our operations at the busiest season of the year. Adding aircraft to an Aircraft
Operating Certificate can be challenging, but we were able to add 4 new fleet types and a number of new aircraft in
the past two quarters.
You may have noticed the announcement of Bill Martin as our new Chief Financial Officer for Discovery Air; I want to
welcome him to our team. Bill is a chartered accountant and was the former CFO of Marsulex Inc. from 2006 until its
sale in 2011. He brings over 25 years of experience to the role having also served as the Vice President of Finance at
Toromont Industries and a partner at Ernst & Young LLP. Andy Min will continue to be a significant contributor to our
Financial Team as the Vice President of Corporate Accounting, and I would like to thank him for all of the hard work
that he has done for DA over the past few years.
This is a time of great change in our organization. As we grow, change can be a good thing because with change
comes new ideas and new ways to solve some of the old issues that hurt us. Don’t be afraid of change, in fact,
embrace it.
I would like to thank you all for your hard work this summer and would like to urge each of you to continue to focus
on our safe and reliable aviation and logistics operations. That is what we do and when we work as a team we do it
very well.

DA in the news: In the Hot Seat
An excerpt by Kenneth I. Swartz from the
July/August 2012 issue of Canadian Skies, a
magazine whose goal is to tell the story of
Canadian aviation:
to the Canadian Forest Service, about 7,400
wildfires occur in Canada annually, with an
average of 1.9 million hectares burned per year.
Fighting forest fires is a daunting task. Each
summer, more than 250 aircraft are contracted
to battle Canadian wildfires.
“Our business is changing. Whether you call
it climate change or global warming, it has
impacted the fire business,” said Jeff Berry,
superintendent of the BC Forest Service’s (BCFS)
provincial air tanker program. “The fire season
is longer, fires are more aggressive and spread
rates are up.
This “seasonal air force” includes the world’s
largest and most modern water bomber and air
tanker fleet; birddog, patrol and special-mission
fixed-wing aircraft; and contract helicopters
used for initial attack.
THE BIG PICTURE
Canada contains about 10 per cent of the
world’s forests and about nine per cent of the
world’s renewable water supply. According
OPERATING CLIMATE
AERIAL FIRE DETECTION
Flying aerial fire patrols is the oldest civil
aviation profession in Canada. In fact, Canadian
aviators have been providing firefighters with a
little extra help from the sky since 1919.
In 1924, the Ontario Provincial Air Service
(OPAS) was founded as the world’s first aerial
fire management organization. The RCAF also
operated a large fleet of fire detection aircraft
into the early 1930s.
Ontario currently dispatches 12 Cessna 337G
fire patrol aircraft, operated by Discovery Air
Fire Services. SOPFEU, the provincial firefighting
agency in Quebec, contracts 22 Cessna 182
RGs and six Cessna 337 aircraft for its patrols.
Saskatchewan hires three fire patrol aircraft
as well. Several other provinces employ patrol
aircraft as required to monitor remote areas and
cover gaps in fire tower networks.

Did you know that the Discovery Air Technical Services’ (DATS) Hockey Team has
new jerseys? The project was realized by employee Jonathan Dubé with full support
from DATS. DATS values its employees and promotes a sense of unity through team
activities, such as hockey. Encouraging and supporting its sports team and giving it
the tools and equipment to succeed only emphasizes this point.
For the hockey savvy, you may have noticed that the jersey’s design was inspired by
the vintage Winnipeg Jet’s jersey.

in the fifth annual Canada Army Run in Ottawa,
Ontario. The fastest growing run in Canada
hosted over 15,000 runners this year. The
Canada Army Run aims to honour and

Status of Air Tindi Limited and Discovery Air International
As there has been some discussion in regards
to the status of the two companies it is
worthwhile to give an update to the Discovery
Air family.
For those not familiar with Air Tindi Limited
(ATL), it is one of the largest fixed wing
operators in Canada with a fleet of 25
turbine aircraft and 200 staff. Established
approximately 20 years ago, ATL is based in
Yellowknife and has become a dominant player
in the Canadian North. ATL has an incredible
market presence in Northern Canada and
a long established relationship with various
stakeholders, local Governments, and not to
mention the extensive list of end user clients
a
3
company
from fishing lodges on up to large multinational
corporations. The ATL brand is so strong that it
is hard to imagine Yellowknife aviation without
Air Tindi, which is why you see it preserved in
the logo below. Further details can be found at
http://airtindi.com/.
As many are aware the initial plans to
establish a fixed wing base in Calgary under
the Discovery Air brand began to take place
in late 2011. By early 2012 Discovery Air
International (DAII) had been formed with a
mandate to serve the corporate, air ambulance
and domestic crew change markets South of
60. There is a second part to that mandate and
that is to pursue overseas opportunities for the
fixed wing fleet. As of September 2012 the
Calgary base has 4 aircraft and approximately
20 people working there. The Calgary based
aircraft operate on the ATL operating certificate.
Growth aspirations for this base include
additional aircraft and personnel as the market
warrants. DAII maintains a webpage at
http://www.discoveryair-intl.com/.
Regarding the current status, the operations of
both companies are gradually being merged
into one. The start of that process was initiated
when Sean Loutitt was made President of both
companies early in 2012. Currently, accounting,
maintenance and flight operations are among
the first departments to be merged. Ultimately
we will see full integration of both companies,
and there will be no separation between the
two companies other than to preserve the
marketing brand of each company in their
respective markets. The great work that ATL
has done in Yellowknife will continue to be
the foundation and main base for future
operations.
2012 Yellowknife Air Show
The Discovery Air Hawk One performed in
Yellowknife on July 14th to a large crowd of
appreciative spectators. On hand to welcome
team leader and demo pilot Dan Dempsey were
staff and families of Air Tindi who provided
outstanding support to the team during their
four day visit. Hundreds of spectators had the
opportunity to sit in the jet and have their
photos taken after the show. Also along to
support the team and meet the general public
were astronaut Maj. Jeremy Hansen and
aeroengine specialist Sgt. Bob Schwindt, both
members of the RCAF. Photo by Cpl Chelsey

Did you know that on August 2, 2012
Discovery Air International flew 2
snowy owls from Edmonton to their
original home in Inuvik, NWT? The
trip went extremely well and the two
beautiful owls are now back in their
natural environment after receiving
the care they needed from the Alberta
Institute for Wildlife Conservation.
A big thank you to Northern Cross

Air Tindi’s Dash 7 test flights
Did you know???
Did you know that on August 8th, 2012
a group of 9 summer camp children had
the chance to view Alpha Jet 082 at
the Bagotville base? After a morning at
the Bagotville Aviation Museum, Simon
Bouchard and Jerome Ouellet lead the
children into the hangar where they each
had their turn in the cockpit.
Air Tindi’s 4th DHC-7 (Dash 7) aircraft recently undertook test flights from Discovery Air
International’s new facility at the Calgary International Airport. The former Air Greenland
full-passenger configured aircraft, registration CPY, flew to Yellowknife on August 6th and
started operations on August 7th, 2012. CPY will compliment the existing fleet of the same
aircraft serving resource development and government customers in Northern Canada.

Discovery Air Fire Services attends the Great Lakes Forest Fire Compact Conference
Discovery Air Fire Services (DAFS) attended the Great
Lakes Forest Fire Compact Conference (GLFFC) in
Thunder Bay on September 17 - 20, 2012. As a sponsor
of the conference, DAFS had the opportunity to market
their services to OMNR, Manitoba and the Northern
States. It was a great forum to showcase their imagery
products and they garnered a great deal of interest in
them.
Pictured here is DAFS Program Manager, Mike Ciezadlo
(left) and President of DAFS, Mark Hill (right) with
GLFFC guest speaker Master Corporal (ret) Paul Franklin
(centre). Franklin, who lost his legs in Afghanistan
travels around the world to give motivational talks
about a book called “The Long Walk Home.” This
inspirational book discusses how to take the next step
when tough times challenge the body and spirit.
What is the GLFFC?
The GLFFC is made up of 3 U.S. States and 2 Canadian Provincial Natural Resources agencies. They have created a formal association in order to
promote effective prevention, pre-suppression and control of forest fires in the Great Lakes Region of the United States
and adjacent areas of Canada.

Nathan Blok, sponsored by GSH, seals back-to-back F1600 Championships
The track at Calabogie has been the scene
of several of Blok’s accomplishments; his first
race in a car (2009) which ended with his first
podium finish, his first race victory in a car
(2010) and his first clean sweep weekend –
both poles, both wins, which sealed his 2012
championship. Blok is now the youngest
champion and back-to-back winner.
Nathan Blok had a racer’s perfect weekend
at his home track of Calabogie, capturing the
Formula Tour F1600 Series’ first-ever back-

to-back titles. The 18-year old from nearby
Beachburg, Ontario placed first in practice,
took the pole position for both races and
won both races against drivers in two F1600
series competing on the annual Ted Powell
Memorial Weekend. The Ontario Formula
Ford Championship (OFFC) drivers had the
advantages of 15 lbs less racing weight, race
fuel instead of pump gas and an aerodynamic
rear diffuser.
“At the first of the season I would not have
thought that I would be the 2012 champion,
let alone secure the title with one full weekend
of racing to spare,” said Blok. “The Britain
West crew gave me an awesome car every
weekend and made my job look easy. They did
an incredible job all season, and I can’t thank
them enough. I would like to thank all of my
sponsors, (including GSH) because without
them I would not have been able to have such
an incredible season and achieve a back to back
championship.”
Pictured here are four
of Top Aces’ Alpha Jet
pilots (L to R), Dave
“Spiff” Whittal, Brad
“Bear” Dolan, Dave
“Barney” Reid and Jeff
“Beck” Beckett.
Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise
in the 1986 Hollywood movie, “Top Gun”
makes a cool, split-second decision during an
aerial dog fight between his F-14 Tomcat and a
Russian MiG fighter.
It’s the kind of response that comes from
expert, airborne training, like that provided
by the jet fighter pilots with Top Aces, a
Canadian subsidiary of Discovery Air based
in Montreal. Top Aces Vice President of
Standards and former F-18 (Hornet) jet fighter
pilot Jeff “Beck” Beckett – in North Bay on
an air combat training job – says the firm has
taken over where the Department of National
Defence has stepped aside.
“About 7 years ago the government put
a request for proposal (RFP) out for the
outsourcing of the airborne training assets.
Basically that is a capability they used to do
all within their own resources with the T-33
7
and the Challenger aircraft and they would
provide electronic warfare training, they would
provide a little bit of close-air support J-TAC
training. They mostly supported the Army and
prepared the Air Force and the Navy. About
2000 to 2001 they got rid of the T-bird (T-33)
and the Challenger, so basically that capability
went away as part of the cost-cutting within
the government at that time. However, it was
soon realized that that training was still crucial
to the everyday training of all our arms of the
military.”
So Top Aces got the job of playing the
“bogeys” or bad guys for Canadian Army, Air
Force and Navy personnel.
Beckett says his team provides a unique service
in Canada. Top Aces is the top gun when
it comes to scale as seen in the Canadian
operation.

Discovery Air announces
three year extension of
Top Aces’ Standing Offers

airborne training services
Discovery Air announced on September 28,
2012 that the Government of Canada has
extended Top Aces’ interim contracted airborne
training services (“ICATS”) Standing Offers for
a further three year term commencing in June
2013 and ending in June 2016.
Top Aces has been the exclusive supplier of

operations, and supports the Air Force
and Navy in adversary support and live fire
target practice. The program also includes
an electronic warfare simulation capability
supported by Department of National Defence
Electronic Warfare Officers.
lance en francais le pilote canadien.

Didier Toussaint, President of Top Aces, stated
“We are very pleased that Top Aces will
continue to deliver its “Canadian solution”
to the Canadian Forces. We have provided
over 34,000 hours of combat support to the
Canadian Forces over the past seven years
while maintaining an exemplary flight safety
record and a serviceability rate of over 98%.
We have permanent bases of operations in six
provinces, and have operated in every province
and territory across Canada, as well as several
locations in the U.S. Our high performance
team consists of retired CF-18 pilots, who
understand the training needs of the men
and women of the Canadian Forces. We really
believe that ‘Experience Matters,’ and this
extension demonstrates that.”
Earlier this year, Public Works and Government
Services Canada (“PWGSC”) commenced an
industry consultation process in anticipation of
the issuance of a solicitation for a long-term
airborne training services contract. Top Aces
intends to submit a proposal in response to
any future solicitation issued by PWGSC for
contracted airborne training services.
New aircraft recognition challenge
1.
Do you consider yourself an expert at spotting
and identifying airplanes? Have you been jolted
out of bed by the sound of a helicopter flying at
night? Are you constantly assessing whether that
aircraft that flew by was a model 100 or 200?
Well now is the time to put your plane spotting
skills to the test. Discovery Air has recently
purchased the following five aircraft. Can you
properly identify them? If so, send an e-mail to
[email protected]. The first four people
to correctly identify these aircraft will win a $25
gift card!
