What’s necessary for innovation to occur and proliferate? The C in the 2014 Ars Electronica Festival theme stands for change, and for confidence in life and for the craving for renewal that, in light of serial global crises, is stronger than ever. But at this year’s conclave at the nexus of art, technology and society, the focus won’t be on a question that’s been discussed so often over the years: What will the future be like? Art as Catalyst theme. As a festival in motion, it’s merging with the city itself—a savings bank, a shopping mall, a college prep school, the Bishop’s residence and the Cathedral are among the primary locations making up Festival City 2014. Accordingly, the C also stands for creativity and collaboration. And for catalysts, the agents necessary to provide energy and trigger a reaction that gets change underway—not only in chemistry experiments; in processes of social renewal too.Since time immemorial, art has been a superb catalyst. It can impart energy to an idea without exhausting itself. Artists as catalysts of change: this fascinating concept will be intensely scrutinized at the 2014 Ars Electronica Festival. The Festival as Experimental Array In pursuing this agenda, the festival is displaying the courage to make some changes to itself—putting itself to the test, and making itself a proving ground for its own Instead, we’ll be concentrating on how humankind can arrive at an eminently livable future, and, above all, which pioneers are already blazing trails in that direction and can make it accessible to all. The specific venues include display windows, lobbies, pubs, courtyards, classrooms, gymnasiums, wood & metal shops, underground garages, and downtown streets and squares. What await festivalgoers there are encounters, surprises, inspiration … and some things to shake them up a bit too. FESTIVAL TO WATCH AND LISTEN Den ganzen Tag auf Expedition gehen? TO EXPLORE Do some scouting, discover new things, see familiar stuff from a new point of view—and sometimes even come to doubt whether this is getting anywhere at all. There are several hundred projects to discover in Festival City, many exhibited in courtyards and passageways that are normally off-limits to the public. The display windows and boutiques in and around the Arkade shopping mall are morphing into a Change Gallery showcasing best-practice examples of how technical and social innovations can make life better, and encouraging festivalgoers to go for it. There’s also an array of media art from all over the world waiting to be discovered in and around the Change Gallery—for instance, works by featured artists shinseungback kimyonhun, and high-tech media art in the Linzer Arkade. FESTIVAL TO WATCH AND LISTEN Expeditions, day in and day out?!? Sometimes you just want to kick back, listen & watch, be entertained and amazed. Gotcha covered! For instance, check out the 100+ computer animated films in the Ars Electronica Animation Festival being screened in Central Linz. Or head over to Deep Space in the Ars Electronica Center for, among other things, interactive storytelling, gigapixel urban panoramas, joint gaming and a digital tour of artist Hermann Nitsch’s oeuvre. At the Big Concert Night featuring the Bruckner Orchester Linz conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, highlights include premieres of “Symphony of Sexual Songs” by Michael Nyman and of a commissioned work by composer Marco Lemke with accompanying visuals by Arotin & Serghei. “Sonotopia,” a sonic art project by Peter Androsch and Anatol Bogendorfer (Hörstadt) staged in the Bischofshof, combines acoustics and architecture. The festival’s grand musical finale is entitled Music Monday, which will include a contribution by the Spanish cultural organization LABoral. FESTIVAL TO PLAY Festival artists show how things really could be: people and users not limited to the role of consumer; instead, as DIYers taking responsibility for their own needs and full advantage of all their options. For example, at u19 – C REATE YOUR WORLD, the future festival of the next generation that’s turning the Akademisches Gymnasium’s courtyard into a creative and intellectual hotbed. Here, the point is to play your own music, shoot your own film, and use your smart devices not as digital fetishes but as tools to turn your ideas into reality. A playful spirit is called for on Domplatz where festivalgoers can make the Cathedral explode with colors or tag it with water-light graffiti. Rain or shine, put up a parasol on Hauptplatz to hear what Umbrella Radio is broadcasting. And in the Ars Electronica Center’s Lobby, you 5 © rubra Wasserlichtgraffiti zu sprühen. 6 © Florian Voggeneder FESTIVAL TO THINK AND TALK Kein Ars Electronica Festival ohne zahlreiche Symposien, Diskussionsrunden und Work shops. Zurücklehnen und genießen heißt es ebenso in © rubra can take a hands-on approach to rediscovering classics from the history of computer gaming. FESTIVAL THAT SHOWS Change doesn’t mean simply chucking all that’s been around for a while. “C … what it takes to change” is carrying on a few festival traditions too—like the exhibitions everybody always looks forward to at the AEC and the OK Center for Contemporary Art. Lots of artists and curators will be on hand to talk about their work. As always, CyberArts 2014 showcases Prix prizewinners. This year’s Campus exhibition presents works by students in the Linz Art University’s Interface Cultures program as well as guests from Arts2 – École Supériere des Arts in Belgium. The curators of Buddha on the Beach describe it as an apocalyptic show of media art from Taiwan. A more lighthearted approach is taken by Device Art in the Ars Electronica Center, an odd collection of equipment featuring sophisticated technology and whimsical design. In the Akademisches Gymnasium, the Ars Electronica’s R&D division—Futurelab and Solutions—is setting up the Future Playground to spotlight what the best and brightest have been up to lately. FESTIVAL TO THINK AND TALK Of course, no Ars Electronica would be complete without symposia, panel discussions and workshops. Keynotes, lecture-presentations, roundtables, thinka-thons, barcamps, classroom lectures and philosophical strolls provide for maximum diversity in an effort to configure an exchange of experience and knowledge in dialogic form that laughs in the face of the risk of abject failure! The centerpiece of this endeavor is the four-day Future Innovators Summit commuting between the Arkade and the Akademisches Gymnasium. Those who have staked out a niche on the leading edge worldwide will present their projects and concepts, and get valuable feedback from a lineup of leading lights including Hiroshi Ishii, Joachim Sauter and Oliviero Toscani. FESTIVAL TO CELEBRATE Needless to say, partying never gets short shrift around here. The celebratory opportunities include the voestalpine Klangwolke in honor of the Danube, the multicultural river par excellence, the Ars Electronica Gala in the Brucknerhaus, and the nightly Nightline. FESTIVAL TO RELAX Relaxation and enjoyment are served up at the food & beverage establishments in and around Festival City. Restaurants such as Arkadenhof, U.Hof, Paul’s and the Domcafé offer a respite from the hustle and bustle. A pleasurable way to round out each day is 7 TÄGLICH/DAILY © Anselmo Tumpic © Allison Godry © Jefta Hoekendijk © Ilja Hendel der Nightline des Festivals. How long have artists been creating media art, actually? What were the first digital works of art? How can historical technologies and edifices be put to new uses? Answers to these questions are provided by Linz’s Cathedral (as event venue) as well as by the 2014 Prix Ars Electronica, which awarded its first Golden Nica to a Visionary Pioneer of Media Art this year and thus focused attention on what is actually now the rather long history of this genre. The second approximately 40-minute-long auditory stroll with Peter Androsch in conjunction with the “Sonotopia” event resembles a walk in the clouds—after all, substantively as well as spatially, this is a matter of air. To be precise: air as a sea of sound waves ricocheting among and through the cityscape’s structures. Seen from this perspective, architects and city planners are the true sound designers. Androsch imparts this impressively. Treffpunkt/Meeting Point: WE GUIDE YOU Tourist Office, Arkade, Erdgeschoß mindestens 10 vor Beginn der Führung / at least 10 minutes before the tour starts Sa/Sat 6. 9. Within Festival City, katrinem (DE/AT) has marked out a Path of Awareness that makes walking in the city an intentional experience, and does so on multiple levels: motoric, acoustic, architectonic and atmospheric. In this spirit, katrinem invites festivalgoers to go on an approximately 40-minute-long walk down the Path of Awareness as a member of a small group and to thus partake of guided performances. And to don their most tonally expressive shoes for the occasion.
