Located in the heart of the growing Prado business center, next to the Vélodrome stadium and the Marseille Chanot exhibition center, this 9 story hotel has 126 modern rooms. Its contemporary decor makes quite an impression, inspired by the major architectural elements of Marseille, such as Corbusier’s “Radiant City” or the Mucem. Located steps from the Vieux-Port, the Grand Hotel Beauvau-MGallery by Sofitel (4 stars) is the ideal embarkation point for a Mediterranean port of call. This historic Marseille hotel, opened in 1816, was completely renovated in 2015. The 73 room hotel has nevertheless maintained its authentic and timeless spirit, just as the famous people who have stayed there (Georges Sand, Alphonse de Lamartine, Frédéric Chopin, etc.). They accomplish all this while creating a contemporary atmosphere. In addition to the luxury offered by its Deluxe rooms and the charm of the Duplex or terrace rooms, the hotel offers a breathtaking view of the Vieux-Port. Ideally located (in the center of the VieuxPort, near the metro and parking), the Carré Vieux-Port Hotel (3 stars) is the largest independently owned hotel in Marseille, and is family owned, which explains its success both in quality and in hospitality. Opened in 1991 with 49 rooms, the GuyotDosson family bought the adjoining building and added 12 new rooms, bringing the capacity to 61 rooms. Completely renovated in 2014-2015, this contemporary facility has a modern style, with trompe-l’œil on the facade, decor designed by Marseillaise artists and a glass elevator serving all of the rooms. The comfortable, fully equipped rooms have been tastefully renovated with care, and attention to detail. The strength of family and independence has allowed this hotel facility to remain unique. In 2015, 8.26 million passengers (+1% /2014) traveled through Marseille Provence Airport (AMP) which places it as the 4th airport in terms of passenger traffic. This increase is largely due to international traffic (+2.3%) and the MP2 terminal for low cost airlines, which saw a record 2.2 million passengers (+10%) this year. These increases compensate for the decrease in activity by the Air France Group and the fall in traffic to Paris following the November 2015 attacks. In 2015, Marseille’s municipal museums welcomed a total of 447,572 visitors, of which 195,766 were for temporary exhibitions. In 2014, these museums had 605,475 visitors, a decrease of -26%, which is primarily explained by the Paris attacks and a socio-economic environment that was not favorable to growth in leisure activities. Despite continued programs, the MuCEM also had reduced visitor numbers of -26% over the 2014 numbers. Visits to other institutions held steady thanks to temporary exhibits and programs (Regards de Provence) and even increased, as at Buzine Castle (ancillary activities) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Andy Warhol exhibit). Once again this year, the Château d’If, the Museum of Roman Docks and the Botanical Garden received the most visitors. 2,129 Museum Passes were sold in 2015. Private mansion built in 1694 by the Cap Nègre Company, it was the property of Jules Cantini, great art connoisseur who gave it to the City in 1916, with the intention that it become a museum devoted to today’s art. The Cantini museum holds one of the most beautiful French public collections of modern art from 1900 to the sixties, offering beautiful examples of fauvism, the first cubist experiments and various post cubist trends. The richly represented surrealist revolution, collected by André Breton, which passes through Marseille on the route of the exiles to the United States in 1940-1941, is another major focus of the collection, in addition to the various trends in lyric or gestural abstraction of the years from 1950 to 1970. The collection includes the great stars that influenced the twentieth century (Picasso, Matisse, etc.) and a photographic collection. In 1640, following a royal edict on “the imprisonment of the poor and beggars”, the city decided to construct the Vieille Charité to accommodate the destitute. This exceptional architectural complex, built in 1670 by Pierre Puget, the King’s architect and a native of the area, was classified as a historic Monument. It is made up of four wings surrounding a rectangular court, in the center of which is a chapel with an oval cupola in the baroque style, a work of art in and of itself.
