For years the Vernet was a Belle Epoque
Sleeping Beauty lingering next to the
Champs Élysées. Now it’s back on top of its
game, following a stylish revamp by designer
François Champsaur – a champion of French
craftsmanship with an eye for hip details like
the undulating marble bar. The lobby is a
prime spot for people-watching, as is the
excellent restaurant (frequented by actual
Parisians as well as hotel guests), featuring a
period iron and glass roof by Gustave Eiffel.
Our high-ceilinged bedroom, meanwhile,
was the very picture of timeless Parisian chic.
Now run by a fourth generation of Gorings, this
Edwardian gem located just around the corner
from Buckingham Palace screams class. All
brass fittings and lush patterned carpets, it
was a favourite of the late Queen Mother, and
hosted the Middleton clan on the eve of Kate’s
wedding to Prince William. Yet luckily for us
non-royals, this five star avoids full-tilt stuffiness thanks to its unfailingly friendly yet discreet staff, the comfort of its suites (many of
which include a charming private terrace) and
the tasty British fare offered in its restaurant,
overseen by new chef Shay Cooper.
Why don’t we all go and live in a Yellow
Submarine? After a night spent in this B&B
near the MAS museum, you might be
tempted. Located in the trendy Eilandje
neighbourhood, on the north side of town,
this bordering-on-the-boutique gem has
three bright, pared-back bedrooms that look
out onto a lively little square. The comfy
rooms, superbly appointed bathrooms and
number of little services on offer (wi-fi,
Nespresso machine…) tick all the boxes. It is,
however, the careful attentions of owner Ilke
that will make you want come again.

Pendant des années, le Vernet était une belle
assoupie de la Belle Époque près des ChampsÉlysées. Sorti de sa torpeur, il est au mieux de
sa forme grâce à une cure de jouvence du designer François Champsaur, champion de l’artisanat français avec touche branchée, comme
l’illustre le bar en marbre ondulant. La réception est le spot idéal pour observer les allers
et venues, tout comme l’excellent restaurant
(fréquenté par de vrais Parisiens et les clients
de l’hôtel), à la verrière, historique, conçue
par Gustave Eiffel. Haute de plafond, notre
chambre était un modèle de chic parisien.
Tenu par quatre générations de Goring, ce bijou édouardien situé près de Buckingham
Palace exsude la classe avec ses cuivres rutilants et ses moelleuses moquettes à motifs.
Adoré par la défunte reine mère, il a accueilli
le clan Middleton la veille du mariage de Kate
avec le prince William. Heureusement pour le
commun des mortels, ce cinq étoiles évite le
guindé à tout crin grâce à son personnel aimable mais discret, au confort incomparable
de ses suites (beaucoup ont une charmante
terrasse privée) et aux savoureux plats british
du restaurant dirigé par le chef Shay Cooper.
Et si nous habitions tous au « Yellow Submarine » ? Après une nuit passée dans ce « bed
and breakfast » proche du MAS, difficile de ne
pas se poser la question. Nichée dans Eilandje,
quartier branché du nord d’Anvers, cette
adresse dispose de trois chambres aux couleurs lumineuses et aux matériaux bruts, qui
donnent sur une place aux faux airs de village.
Le confort des chambres, les superbes baignoires, et les services (wifi, machine à café
Nespresso…), mérite une mention très bien.
Mais ce sont les attentions d’Ilke, la propriétaire, qui donnent un goût de « reviens-y ».
