Adjusting Halftones
EVALUATING
Verify that the image is Grayscale.
Using the Eyedropper Tool with the Sample Size set to 3 by 3 Average,
assess the lightest and darkest areas. Looking at the Info Pallete, the
highlights should be 2% and the shadows 94%. Flesh tones, if possible,
should be 23-28%.
If these percentages are not met the image could be adjusted to print better.
ADJUSTING
All areas that are not part of the image must be removed, white or black
borders from scanning the image, etc.
All of the steps outlined for adjusting a halftone will be available under
Image Adjustments on the Menu Bar.
Specific functions outlined below can be processed with the one key after
the attached Actions Set is imported into your Adobe Photoshop.
➊
Begin with Auto Contrast.
Second will be Levels.
Match the Levels Window below to set the 2% and 94% values.
Step 1 can be performed with the the Photo Finish 2% action (F1).
If after performing Step 1, a 94%
cannot be found try applying a Blur
from Filter on the Menu Bar
➋
Now we will focus on the flesh tones (mid tones).
Using Curves we can lighten or darken the midtones without changing the lightest and darkest
areas as much.
It is best to work in small increments. Use the curve sample below as a guide.
Use the Lighten Curve action (F3) and Darken Curve action (Shift+F3) to apply Curves.
After each Curve return to Step 1 and check the flesh tone (mid tone) values. This will create a
base to work from so the values are accurate.
➌
The proper flesh tones have been acheived, now we will add contrast to the image.
➍
In some rare instances, a 94% may not be found after all of the proper adjustments have been
made. In this case, place your cursor over the darkest area in the image. Using Levels increase
the number in the upper left box from 0 until the area under your cursor becomes 94%.
Again go to Curves and follow the guide image.
Notice that the dark areas beome slightly darker and the flesh tones stay the same.
