Mieux connu par ses voisins et habitants sous le nom de
Swisha; le très beau village de Rapides des Joachims est situé
dans le comté du Pontiac.
Le village occupe une île d’une
superficie d’environ 5 milles situé à mi-chemin entre Pembroke
et Mattawa, au milieu de la rivière des Outaouais.
En quittant la transcanadienne par la route 635 de Rolphton
en Ontario, une randonnée de cinq minutes vous conduira à un
des très rare pont interprovincial à une seul voie. Puis, un
autre deux minutes et vous voilà aux quais municipaux de
Swisha et de la rampe de mise à l’eau.
De la rive une très belle vue de la rivière encadrée par les
Laurentides.
Les montagnes riveraines sert d’habitat et de
réserve pour les rare aigles à tête blanche qui pêchent dans les
eaux tumultueuses de la rivière.
Vous pouvez mettre votre bateau à l’eau, acheter des
provisions, de l’essence, de la glace ou des appâts et pêcher
dans la rivière des Outaouais avec un permis de pêche soit du
Québec, soit de l’Ontario. Vous pouvez amarrer votre bateaux
aux quais municipaux ou bien prendre arrangement avec la
voie navigable pour faire transporter votre bateau en amont du
barrage hydro électrique pour ensuite naviguer en toute
tranquillité jusqu’à Mattawa. Notre village est un paradis de
tranquillité où, il fait bon de se reposer et de découvrir la vallée
de L’Outaouais.
Originellement Rapides des Joachims était une mission pour
ensuite devenir un poste de traite de la Hudson’s Bay Company.
En 1871 il est devenu un petit village avec un important
commerce pour le bois d’oeuvre. Autour de 1872 des bateaux
à vapeur assuraient le transport sur la rivière qui est devenue
une importante voie navigable. Il y avait même La Compagnie
de Télégraphe de Montréal. En 1886 les frères Oblats ont fait
construire la première église du village qui fut remplacée en
1922 par l‘église actuelle. C’est en 1955 que Rapides des
Joachims fut incorporé et J. H. Madore est devenu son tout
premier maire. Aujourd’hui Swisha est reconnu pour un endroit
de prédilection pour le chasse, la pêche et la villégiature. A
cause de la richesse des forêts, c’est également l’endroit que la
Commonwealth Plywood à choisit pour y installer un moulin
pour le bois d’oeuvre.

Better known to its neighbours and inhabitants as
“Des Swisha”, the beautiful Village of Rapides-des-Joachims is
situated in Pontiac County’s scenic Aberdeen Township.
The
Village occupies a five mile long island in the Ottawa River,
midway between Pembroke and Mattawa.
A five minute drive from where County Route 635 leaves
Trans-Canada Highway 17 in Rolphton Ontario will bring you
to one of Canada’s few remaining single-lane Interprovincial
bridges. Another two minutes puts you at the Swisha waterfront,
boat launch and our free public docking facilities.
From the waterfront there is an unparalleled vista looking
down the Ottawa River, framed by the Laurentian Hills. The
mountain side opposite the waterfront hosts one of Canada’s
rare eagle preserves, where these majestic birds gather to fish in
the waters of the mighty Ottawa River.
You can launch your boat here, purchase supplies, fuel, ice
or bait - and fish in the Ottawa River using either your Ontario
or your Québec fishing license. Tie up at the free daily docking
provided by the municipality, or arrange for the Ottawa
Navigable Waterways services to trailer your larger boat around
the Hydro dams and launch you back into the river where you
can cruise the Ottawa worry-free as far northwest as Mattawa.
Our Village remains a quiet haven where you can take a moment
to relax and get to know the real Ottawa Valley.
Although originally a mission post on the Upper Ottawa
River when a Hudson's Bay Post was built at the foot of the long
rapids, by 1871 Rapides des Joachims had become a small
village doing a considerable lumber business.
River steamers
called here because at that time it was the head of Ottawa River
navigation. There was a Montreal Telegraph Company office
here, and a steamer began to make the run 18 miles upriver to
Roch Capitaine by the early 1870's. In 1886 the Oblate Fathers
built a frame church in the village, replacing it with a new
church in 1922. J H Madore became mayor when Rapides des
Joachims was incorporated in 1955, and later Aberdeen
township was added. Today, "The Swisha" is known for good
hunting and fishing, and is home to a Commonwealth Plywood
mill.
