Origins of fly fishing
Conclusions
From the earliest times fly fishing was was based on the concept of
imitation of insects. Anglers are fathers of entomology

Fly fishing during emergence of mayfly Oligoneuriella
Origins of fly fishing
Conclusions
Hungry man observed trout feeding at water surface
He tried to catch trout with a natural bait
This didn’t work!!!
Tried a natural mayfly
- Insect is to soft
- Night time
Cannot catch the insect
Cannot see the insect or hook
This didn’t work!!!

Origins of fly fishing
Conclusions
The ancient fly angler learned that an imitation is better
than a natural
Origins of fly fishing
Argument:
The angling technique was highly developed in
antiquity
La technique de la pêche avec l’hameçon dans les temps
anciens était bien développé
La tecnica di pesca col amo nei tempi antici é stata
molto sviluppata
W starożytności technika połowu ryb była wysoko
rozwinięta

Origins of fly fishing
Conclusions
The development of fly fishing in Europe
was based on the mayfly Oligoneuriella

Management of River San
River San
Solina dam constructed in the years 1961-1968
Characteristics:
- Depth 60 m (deepest reservoir in Poland)
- Lake area 2100 ha
River San
Myczkowce dam
- 23 m high
- Hypolimnion drain
- Winter temperature 4˚C
- Summer temperature 10˚C
River San
Ante 1968:
Chub
Dominated by Cyprinidae
Barbel
No trout or grayling
Nase
River San
Brown trout
Post 1970:
Stocking with Salmonids:
Grayling
Sea trout
Huchen
Management:
Stocking
Brown trout, grayling, sea trout and huchen
Marking and studying fish
injecting elastomer
Protection
From poachers
Problem with predators
No-Kill section

Poaching is not allowed!!!!!
No illegal
Uninvited guests
No Kill section
Created in 2004
Parameteres:
- From the outlet of the power plant in Zwierzyń
-To the inflow of the tributary Hoczewka
-Length 7 km
-Fly-fishing-only with barbless hooks
- Maximum of 50 annual licenses (expensive – 1400 PLN)
- Maximum of 15 day tickets (70 PLN)
x
No Kill section
Goals
- To increase the population of Salmonids
- To obtain material for artificial reproduction
- To create conditions for fly angling and development of tourism
Effects:
- In 2006: 3200 day-tickets sold, of which 1500 to foreigners
- Foreigners: Mainly from France.
Next: Italy, United Kingdom,
Also: Czech Rep., Slovakia, Netherlands, Hungary,
Germany, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Lithuania, even USA and Japan
- In 2006 total direct income from angling tourism: ca 1.5 million PLN
(ca 400.000 EUR)
- Local population realized that protecting the river is good
business
Effects:
- Many fish available for natural and artificial reproduction (for
San and other rivers, even in other parts of Poland)
- No-Kill anglers have a water full of fish
- Yes-Kill anglers have many fish in the section downstream
(the overproduction drift downstream)
- Biodiversity is increased (more predators and wildlife)
No Kill section
