THE BEACH CODE
For your safety, choose the areas supervised
by a lifeguard and keep an eye on the
warning flags and signs on the beaches.
• These areas are organised and
supervised by a team of lifeguards who
can be found in the first-aid posts every day
from 11am to 6.30pm. If an accident occurs
while they are on duty (flag flying over the
first-aid post), alert them immediately. At
other times, telephone the emergency
services (sapeurs-pompiers) on 18 or 112.
• Don’t rush into the sea, particularly after
spending a long time in the sun.
• Keep a close eye on your children while
they are in or near the water and help them
to remember your position on the beach by
pointing out landmarks, such as the totem
poles on Richelieu and Le Grau d’Agde
beaches, put there for that purpose.
• Access for people with reduced mobility
is made easier with the wooden boards
found at 7 of the beaches in the region from
the beginning of June to 15 September.
Also special wheelchairs adapted for
bathing (“tiralo” type) are available at Le
Grau d’Agde, Saint-Vincent, Richelieu West
and East, La Roquille and the Port Nature
naturist beach, during opening periods for
life-guard stations.
• Use the marked-out "beach access"
paths and stay within the wooden fences, to
protect the vegetation and avoid trampling on
the dunes.
• To preserve the quality and cleanliness of
the coastline, a public order prohibits access
to the beaches by dogs and horses between 1
May and 31 October, access by motor vehicles
and the flying of kites from 9.30am to 7.30pm
from 1 May to 31 October, and selling, camping
or camp fires at any time.

the oldest working canal in Europe.

The Natura 2000 site covers a marine area of 6113
hectares, from Port Ambonne to Le Grau d’Agde, and up to
3 miles off shore. This area shelters a wealth of important
natural life, such as Posidonia (seagrass) and Coralligène,
as well as valuable heritage sites such as the Ile de
Brescou, the rocky seabed of la Grande Conque and Roche
Notre-Dame. It is also an area where most of the maritime
activities take place, such as boating, diving, and fishing,
etc.
The Natura 2000 charter encourages the businesses,
residents and visitors to adopt the eco-citizen principles,
to respect the fragile natural habitats and the water

Through the underwater trail near the coast, and thanks to
the diving clubs who signed the Diving Quality Charter, you
can discover the life forms on the rocky sea-bed and help

Starting from la Plagette in Le Cap d’Agde, in the heart
of the “Posidonies du Cap d’Agde” Natura 2000 site, this
trail allows you to discover the easily accessible fauna,
flora and underwater seascapes, on the seabed of
volcanic origin.
The trail, marked for a distance of 200 m, allows you to
dive freely and approach five different types of
underwater environments at depths between 0 and 5 m.

This ancient volcano was the last to emerge in the Puys
d’Auvergne mountain range. Its eruption in 750,000 BC,

led to the formation of Le Cap d’Agde. Evidence can be

Môle, Rochelongue, Mont Saint-Martin and the islet of

Where fresh and salt waters meet, at the crossroads of the
Herault River, the Canal du Midi and the Mediterranean,
Agde is one of the oldest cities in France.
The town of Greek origin is located on the Herault River at
the foot of the Mont Saint-Loup, an extinct volcano. This
particular geology gave Agde an original style due to the
basalt traditionally used for construction, and a rare
environment in Languedoc-Roussillon.

BRESCOU FORTRESS
The volcanic island of Brescou lies less than 2 km off Cap
d’Agde. It was fortified in the 16th century, during the Wars
of Religion. The current fort, with its 4 bastions, was
restored in 1680, probably from plans drawn up by the
great military architect, Vauban. It became a state prison in
the 18th Century, until 1851.
NOTRE-DAME-DU-GRAU
Notre-Dame-du-Grau sanctuary was built in ancient times
and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the fifth or sixth
century.
It groups together two religious monuments, namely:
◆ Notre-Dame-du-Grau Church, the original holy shrine.
This priory was founded by Saint-Sever, then used by the
Benedictines, before finally becoming the church of a
Capuchin convent built by the Constable of Montmorency,
the Governor of Languedoc.
◆ The Genouillade Chapel.
This was also built by the Constable in the 16th century and
commemorates a medieval miracle (authentic or legendary),
which is reported inside the chapel. It is a refreshing,
spiritual place to visit.

THE ÉPHÈBE STATUE
Discovered in 1964 in the Herault River,
the Éphèbe statue has become the
symbol of Agde’s past. Greatly inspired
by portraits of Alexander the Great and
attributed to the School of Lysippus,
this 2,300 year old Greek bronze statue
is the showpiece of the Musée de
l’Ephèbe, a museum devoted to
underwater archaeology, which also
possesses an extremely rare collection
of ancient amphorae and bronzes.

History of Agde
• 580 BC: Agathé or Agathé Tyché (meaning good
fortune) was founded by sailors from Phocaea in
Asia Minor.
• 4th century BC: Agathé Tyché was colonised by
Marseilles and became France’s second Grecian
city.
• 5th century: Agde was converted to Christianity and
became the seat of a powerful bishopric until 1790.
• 12th century: Agde’s fortified Cathedral was built of
basalt, in the Romanesque style.
• 1632 : Cardinal Richelieu chose Le Cap d’Agde as
the site for a major new port in the Gulf of Lions.
• 1960 : the French government’s Mission Interministérielle
d’Aménagement du Territoire decided to create a
holiday resort at Le Cap d’Agde.
• 1964 : the Éphèbe d’Agde – an ancient Greek bronze
statue – was discovered in the Herault.
• 1969 : construction of Le Cap d’Agde began with
Port Saint-Martin, with the first works being inaugurated on 1st July 1970.
• 1999 : at the last census, Agde had 20,303
inhabitants.
• 2001 : two bronze Roman bronze statuettes were
discovered off the coast of Le Cap d’Agde. Today,
the Musée de l’Ephèbe has the largest French
collection of ancient bronze artefacts found on site.

GETTING THERE BY BOAT
When approaching from the North-East and the East, take the
southward route around the Lauze beacon then follow a
heading of 357° towards the summit of Mont Saint-Loup,
between the two channel lighthouses. When approaching
from the South or the West, take a wide berth around the islet
of Brescou (with the South Cardinal buoy to port), then follow
a heading of 357° towards the summit of Mont Saint-Loup, as
before. Do not take the route north of Brescou. Lauze
lighthouse: Flashing green light (4 seconds). South Cardinal:
Six quick-flashing white lights + flashing white light (15s).
Islet of Brescou: Two flashing lights, red and white (6s).
