Présentation
This season, students have attended GIF art workshops to learn the art of making animated GIFs, which will be
presented during the festival. This has also inspired a GIF art contest open to all.
Quick history lesson: well known among Internet users, the GIF is a format that also brought us the cinemagraph.
==> The cinemagraph is an image showing a small and repeated animation. Generally made in animated GIF format,
the effect is like watching a video.
The term ‘cinemagraph’ was coined by Americans Kevin Burg and Jamie Beck, photographer and animator
respectively, who used the technique to animate their fashion shots during Fashion Week in early 2011.
==> GIF : Graphics Interchange Format (pronounced ‘jif’).
A format created in 1987 for simple images and extended to the moving image in 1989, GIFs became popular on the
Internet in the early 2000s.
