AIFF turns 20!!
After enjoying movies under the stars all summer get ready for a film bonanza at the Athens
International Film Festival starting September 17 until September 28. Featuring over 100 feature
films from all over the world in three competition sections, special tributes, documentaries and more
than 60 homegrown shorts. Here are Insider’s picks of two brilliant Canadian productions.
THE GRAND SEDUCTION, a Don McKellar Film starring Brendan Gleeson, Taylor Kitsch, Gordon
Pinsent, Liane Balaban, and Mark Critch.
Murray (Brendan Gleeson) is a once proud fisherman who now, along with his former colleagues in
the tiny fishing village of Tickle Head, is out of work and forced to live off welfare. With the
community spirit having faded and the town left with no Mayor, Murray takes charge and comes up
with a plan – allow the building of a factory that will employ the entire village. But there’s one issue
– they must have a doctor in residence.
Chance brings along Dr. Paul Lewis (Taylor Kitsch), who is convinced to do a one-month stint as the
local physician. With Tickle Head’s future resting in the doctor’s hands, the townsfolk acquaint
themselves with his favourite sport with hilarious consequences, tap his phone to discern his
likes/dislikes, and do everything in their power to make him feel at home. What ensues is an all-out
seduction with Murray enthusiastically encouraging the elaborate deception that is Tickle Head’s
only way back to a happier way of life.
The Grand Seduction premieres at the AIFF on Friday, September 19 (20:00) at DANAOS 1. Q&A

WHAT IF, a Michael Dowse Film starring Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan, Megan Park and Adam Driver.
Newly single Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) forms an instant bond with Chantry (Zoe Kazan,
granddaughter of director Elia Kazan) while reading refrigerator magnet poetry at a party. They
have great chemistry, but there’s an issue – Chantry has a serious boyfriend. Not one who’d break a
happy relationship, Wallace starts hanging out with Chantry in strictly platonic fashion. They talk
about everything from movies to illnesses to disappointing Christmas presents.
Told through their many meetings over the course of a year and interwoven with both Wallace and
Chantry’s hyperactive imagination, What If hilariously demonstrates the complications of timing. All
of their insecurities, regrets and victories are exposed.
What if premieres at the AIFF on Thursday September 25 (20:00) at Cinema Ideal. Q&A with the
