Chardonnay (White Burgundy) I know many people gravitate toward California for Chardonnay, but why not try one from the grape's homestead? If you like bright, crisp styles with more mineral and less oak, try a Chablis, Viré-Clessé, a Mâcon, or Saint Aubin (not to mention anything from Oregon)… and if you're into bigger styles with more weight and oak presence, try something from Meursault or Montrachet! I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty." ~ Lily Bollinger Bubbles Much like Lily (see above quote), I also believe that bubbles should be drunk on more than just special occasions. They can be fun, easy, and refreshing; or they can be layered, complex, and intricate. Either way, they deserve to be enjoyed way more frequently than they are. I have more bubbles in my cellar at home than anything else... because why not? They have fruit and body but also have restraint, acidity, and terroir. I've been to Oregon several times and am a huge fan of their wines. For more lush, dark fruit, go Shiraz. For earth, pepper, and terroir, try a French Syrah. For more concentrated fruit with a backbone of jerky spice, try something from California or Washington. Italy Italy can be a daunting wine region to delve into, mainly because there are thousands of grapes indigenous to the country that are often found nowhere else. A whirlwind tour for where to start: for big, dry wines with flavors and aromas reminiscent of potpourri, spice, and earth, try something from Piedmont. If you're a fan of Cabernet blends, try something from Tuscany. If you're a Zin drinker or like wines with a bit more concentration of fruit, try something from Sicily or the Veneto.
