En 1925, lorsque le docteur Andreu inaugure cet hôtel,
il souhaite en faire le plus bel établissement de la ville,
à commencer par son emplacement. A quinze minutes
de Barcelone, sur la montagne du Tibidabo, la vue sur
la cité catalane est époustouflante.
In 1925, when Doctor Andreu inaugurated this hotel, he
wanted to make it the most beautiful establishment in
the city, starting with its location. Since it is only fifteen
minutes from Barcelona, on the Tibidabo mountain, the
view from here on the Catalonian city is breathtaking.

Andreu a confié les travaux à Ramon Raventos, un architecte espagnol
au style noucentiste (un mouvement catalan du début du XXe siècle).
En 1939, au moment de la guerre civile espagnole, l’établissement est
transformé en hôpital militaire. La décennie suivante, des rénovations
lui permettent de connaître une époque faste. L’équipe de football de
Barcelone s’y ressource entre deux matchs, côtoyant les familles aisées
comme les people, d’Ernest Hemingway à Rock Hudson, en passant par
James Stewart et le roi de Belgique. Dans les années 2000, nouvelle
vague de rénovations qui comprend la construction d’un nouveau
bâtiment. Désormais propriétaire, le groupe Stein (dernièrement
rebaptisé Franklyn Hotels and Resort) souhaite jouer sur le côté
historique tout en insufflant de la modernité.
Andreu entrusted the work site to Ramon Raventos, a new centrist
style Spanish architect (from the early 20th century movement). In 1939
during the Spanish civil war, the establishment was transformed into a
military hospital. In the next decade, renovations made for richer times.
The Barcelona soccer team rested there between matches, along with
wealthy families and celebrities like Ernest Hemingway, Rock Hudson,
James Stewart and the King of Belgium. In the years after 2000, a new
wave of renovations included the construction of a new building. The
current owner, the Stein Group (recently rebaptized Franklyn Hotels and
Resort), wanted to play on the historical side while giving it a breath of
modernity.

Résultat : le fer forgé côtoie l’acier inoxydable, les photos de l’hôtel
datant des années 1920 et 1930 jouxtent les œuvres de peintres
contemporains, comme Gabrielle Fettolini. Car l’art est omniprésent à
La Florida. Ici, des photos de Manuel Armengolet prises du toit de l’un
des célèbres bâtiments de Gaudi, la Casa Mila, plus loin, dans le lobby,
une sculpture de granit naturel et une fontaine en acier inoxydable,
du couple d’artistes anglais Ben Jakober et Yannick Vu. La décoration
intérieure a été confiée à un autre duo : le designer Dale Keller et sa
femme Patricia, auteurs notamment de l’Amanusa et du Four Seasons
de Bali. On retrouve cet univers arty dans les quelque soixantedix chambres, et tout particulièrement dans les huit Design Suites.
L’allemande Rebecca Horn a réalisé la Sky Terrace Suite, avec salle de
bains en marbre du Guatemala, baignoire Philippe Starck, sol en bois
wengé et terrasse spectaculaire. Dale Keller s’est chargé de la bien
nommée Japanese Suite avec son style minimaliste, et Cristina Macaya
de la Presidential Suite, où l’on peut admirer les trompe-l’œil du peintre
français Stéphane Guillemet.

The result: wrought iron beside stainless steel, with pictures of the hotel
from the 20s and 30s next to the works of modern painters like Gabrielle
Fettolini. Because art is everywhere at La Florida. The photos of Manuel
Armengolet taken from the roof of one of the famous Gaudi buildings,
the Casa Mila, and farther in the lobby, a natural granite sculpture and a
stainless steel fountain, by the English artists Ben Jakober and Yannick
Vu. The interior decoration was entrusted to another couple, the designer
Dale Keller and his wife Patricia, who also created the Amanusa and
Four Seasons in Bali. One can find this arty universe in the 70 rooms,
particularly in the eight Design Suites. The German Rebecca Horn created
the Sky Terrace Suite, with a bathroom made of marble from Guatemala,
a Philippe Starck bathtub and wenge floor and spectacular terrace. Dale
Keller was in charge of the aptly named Japanese Suite with its minimalist
style, and Cristina Macaya did the Presidential Suite, where one can admire
trompe-l’œil works by the French painter Stephane Guillement.
L’extérieur n’est pas en reste, à l’instar du ZenZone Spa de 500 m2 et de
la piscine de 37 mètres de longueur, avec ses effets visuels interactifs.
Un hôtel classé patrimoine historique mais résolument moderne.
The exterior was not neglected, with its Zen Zone Spa of 500 square
meters, and its 37-meter-long pool, with interactive visual effects. A
hotel classified as a historical monument but one that is entrenched in
modernity.
