PREVIEW : LOSC LILLE MÉTROPOLE - VALENCIENNES FC
LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC Feature Preview
Lille has been the place to be for goals this season and the champions need a result in the northern derby with Valenciennes, Ligue
1's second-worst away side, on Sunday to enhance their chances of finishing third.
Third in the table ever since beating Lyon 3-1 in Week 11, a run of three matches without a win has seen the chasing pack close in on
Rudi Garcia's side. In Week 27 Lille fell 2-1 at Lyon, all but putting an end to their hopes of retaining their Ligue 1 crown with the gap
between themselves and leaders Paris Saint-Germain up to 11 points before Week 28. Prior to the weekend play, four clubs were
stacked up within four points of Lille and midfielder Benoît Pedretti admits it's time to look over their shoulder.
"We drew with Auxerre and we lost to Lyon, so we had the chance to make up points and compete for a top two finish," said the
former French international. "Instead we're not collecting points and we've allowed the clubs behind to close up on us. It will be tight
right until the end of the season and we need to react and win this weekend."
The Lille-Valenciennes derby is traditionally a friendly rivalry, yet both sides are desperate for points. Garcia said: "What counts for us
is winning the next match as it's a derby against Valenciennes. It's very important for us to start a positive run and move on. Anything
other than a win against Valenciennes would be a damaging result for us."
VAFC have managed a single away win all campaign, a 2-1 victory at Dijon in Week 22, and lost nine times away from their Stade du
Hainaut fortress, which was penetrated in Week 27 by high-flying Saint-Etienne who came from behind to win 2-1 in a match both
sides finished with ten men. VAFC midfielder Carlos Sanchez received his marching orders in the fourth minute for a nasty challenge
on ASSE counterpart Fabien Lemoine and on Thursday the Colombian international was handed a nine-match ban.
Sanchez's suspension is a further blow for Valenciennes coach Daniel Sanchez, still coming to terms with the ASSE loss that left
VAFC in mid-table but an uncomfortable four points above the relegation places before the weekend play. Sanchez said: "Losing at
home is costly. All the clubs are hanging in there and it's a very tight league. Up until now we'd kept our heads above water because
of our home form. This defeat stopped us in our tracks but we'll keep on battling."
Lille centre-half Mauro Cetto serves the final match of a two-game ban and that will encourage VAFC forward Vincent Aboubakar in
his quest to score a first away goal for the club. Aboubakar is looking forward to facing his Cameroonian international team-mate
Aurélien Chedjou: "He's a really good lad. In the national set-up he has always backed me and given me advice. I've got a lot of
respect for him. He's one of the really good defenders around in Ligue 1 and is really strong. If I can dribble past him then that will
make me happy. I've got to try it!"
48 goals have flown in at the Stadium Lille Métropole this season - 24 of them in the last four LOSC home games - and yet another
sell-out crowd will be looking forward to more entertainment, although if there is to be another high-scoring thriller then the LOSC fans
will be hoping their side emerge on the right end of it, having lost 5-4 to Bordeaux in Week 23 and drawn 4-4 with Nice in Week 19.

Week 28
LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC
LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC
- HISTORY: Lille have hosted Valenciennes 18 times in the top division. LOSC have won 10, there have been two draws, and VAFC
have won six times at Lille.
- Lille were 2-1 winners in Week 27 last season, although they needed a late Eden Hazard winner (90+2') after Grégory Pujol (59')
had cancelled out Moussa Sow's 39th-minute opener.
- Lille have won each of their last four Ligue 1 hostings of VAFC.
- In Week 12 this season the sides played out a goalless draw at the Stade du Hainaut. The woodwork was struck on four occasions,
a figure beaten only by Valenciennes v Saint-Etienne (6) and Lyon v Ajaccio (5) this season.
- The clubs also met at the Stade du Hainaut in the Round of 16 of the French Cup on February 8 and VAFC won that one 2-1.
Mathieu Dossevi (71') and Vincent Aboubakar (78') scored for VA before Nolan Roux (88') replied.
- LILLE:
- GENERAL: Lille head into Week 28 third in Ligue 1 with 47 points from 27 games (12W, 11D, 4L). LOSC start the weekend 11
points behind second-placed Montpellier and a further point back from leaders PSG. LOSC had a one-point advantage over
fourth-placed Saint-Etienne before Week 28.
- LOSC have been third in the table ever since beating Lyon 3-1 in Week 11.
- In Week 27 LOSC fell 2-1 at Lyon. Alexandre Lacazette (12') and Lisandro Lopez (38') scored for OL. Aurélien Chedjou (45+1')
pulled one back for Lille. LOSC couldn't take advantage of OL going down to ten men when Dejan Lovren was sent off 20 minutes
from time. LOSC have not won any of their last three league games.
- LOSC had been unbeaten in four league games prior to the OL loss.
- Lille have suffered more defeats in all competitions (5) in 2012 than they did in the whole first half of the season, and have now
suffered more defeats in the current campaign than they did in the whole of the last one.
- Lille recorded their first league defeat in 18 matches when they were beaten 2-0 at Olympique de Marseille in their first game back
after the winter break - Loïc Rémy scored twice in the second half for the hosts (61', 83').
- Before losing in Marseille, LOSC had gone a club record 17 league games unbeaten since losing 1-0 at home to Montpellier Hérault
SC. Not since Rennes went 18 games unbeaten in 2008-09 had a Ligue 1 side enjoyed such a streak of invincibility.
- Rudi Garcia is the only Ligue 1 coach to have used all three substitutes in every league game to date.
- LOSC are third in the attack table with 46 goals scored.
- Hazard (11) is club top scorer. Nolan Roux has scored eight this season (four for Brest and four for Lille).
- Hazard is LOSC's leading assists provider with seven - only three L1 players have laid on more goals.
- Lille defenders have chipped in with 12 goals, more than any other L1 defence.
- LOSC have scored 22 goals from set-pieces this season. Chedjou's goal from a Benoît Pedretti corner at OL was their ninth from a
flag kick.
- LOSC are third in the fair-play table. Mauro Cetto (v Auxerre in Wk 26) and Mathieu Debuchy (v Sochaux in Wk 6) are the two red
cards they have collected.
- Mickaël Landreau, Eden Hazard and Rio Mavuba have featured in all 27 league games.
- Lille home games have seen more goals than any other stadium (48), with 24 of those scored in their last four home matches.
- HOME FORM: LOSC are ninth in the home form table with 23 points from 13 games (6W, 5D, 2L).
- Lille threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home to AJ Auxerre in Week 26. Eden Hazard (34', 63' pen) put the hosts in charge,
despite a 41st-minute red card shown to Mauro Cetto for a second bookable offence. The visitors' Anthony Le Tallec was then
dismissed (68'), but Ben Sahar (80') and Cédric Hengbart (84') earned the Burgundy club an unexpected point.
- Only Montpellier (30) have scored more than LOSC's 29 at home. Only Ajaccio and Sochaux (both 20) have conceded more often

LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC
than Lille's 19 at home.
- Hazard has scored seven L1 goals at home.
- Lille have won five and drawn four of the nine home games in which they've scored first.
- LOSC have scored in each of their last 12 home games, failing to score only in their first home game of the season (a 1-0 loss to
Montpellier in Week 2).
- LOSC other defeat was the crazy 5-4 home defeat to Bordeaux in Week 23.
- LOSC have scored in 30 of their last 31 L1 home games, the exception being the 1-0 loss to Montpellier in Week 2.
- Hazard has scored In each of his last five L1 home games, scoring six times in that run.
- COUPE DE LA LIGUE: In the quarter-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue on 11 January OL beat LOSC 2-1 at the Stade de Gerland,
despite having been reduced to ten men after just 11 minutes when Mouhamadou Dabo was shown a straight red card. Cole (28')
then put Lille in front before Kim Kallstrom (41') and Lisandro (65') edged OL through. Lille's Mathieu Debuchy was sent off eight
minutes from time for a second bookable offence.
- COUPE DE FRANCE: The holders were beaten 2-1 by northern neighbours Valenciennes FC in their Round of 16 tie on 8 February.
Mathieu Dossevi (71') and Vincent Aboubakar (78') scored for VA before Roux (88') replied.
- CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Lille were eliminated from all European competition after a goalless draw at home to Trabzonspor on
Matchday 6. Victory would have seen them into the knockout stages. They also missed out on the Europa League as a consequence
of CSKA Moscow's 2-1 win at Inter Milan on the same evening as the Ligue 1 champions ended bottom of Group B.
- TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: Lille lost 5-4 to Marseille in the traditional season-opener in Tangiers. Lille led 2-0 thanks to goals
from Florent Balmont (9') and Hazard (57'). André Ayew got one back for OM (71') only for Sow (72') to make it 3-1. In a crazy finish,
Jérémy Morel (85'), Rémy (87') and André Ayew (90+1', pen) had Marseille 4-3 up, Marko Basa (90+2') equalised, before another
André Ayew penalty (90+5') won it for Didier Deschamps' side. Aurélien Chedjou was sent off for Lille.
- SUSPENSIONS: Mauro Cetto serves the second match of a two-game ban.
- INJURIES: Franck Béria (calf), Ronny Rodelin (adductors), and Marko Basa (shoulder) remain sidelined. Basa has returned to
training, however. Mickaël Landreau (ankle) had to sit out training in midweek.
- TRIVIA: Sunday's match is a sell-out. It's the 13th sell-out crowd at Lille this season.
- Lille have now broken through 20,000 season ticket sales for next season when they'll play at their new Grand Stade.
- VALENCIENNES:
- GENERAL: Valenciennes are 11th in the table with 31 points from 27 games (8W, 7D, 12L).
- In Week 27 VAFC lost 2-1 at home to Saint-Etienne. Carlos Sanchez was sent off for VAFC in the fourth minute and was followed
off the park by ASSE defender Jean-Pascal Mignot in the 34th minute. Vincent Aboubakar (69') put VAFC in front but goals in quick
succession from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (73') and Bakary Sako (77') gave ASSE the points.
- Valenciennes had gone five L1 games unbeaten, their longest streak of the season, prior to losing to Les Verts. They had also won
five of their six previous L1 games at the Stade du Hainaut.
- VAFC are 15th in the attack table with 28 goals.
- Vincent Aboubakar, Renaud Cohade and Gaël Danic have all scored four times in L1. All of Aboubakar's goals have been scored in
home fixtures.
- Cohade has four assists to his name.
- VAFC have struck the woodwork on 18 occasions this season, more than any other club.
- VAFC are joint-seventh in the defensive table with 30 goals conceded.
- Goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau is the only VAFC player to have started all 27 games.
- VAFC are unbeaten in their last seven L1 games against France's champion club.

Week 28
LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC
- AWAY FORM: VAFC are 19th in the away form table with seven points from 14 games (1W, 4D, 9L).
- Only Brest (4) have scored fewer than VAFC's ten on their travels.
- Their 2-1 win at Dijon in Wk 22 (Thil 90+2' for Dijon, Cohade 3' and Danic 43') for VAFC was their first away win of the campaign.
- Only Nice can match VAFC's nine away defeats.
- VAFC have not kept a clean sheet away this season. Their last away clean sheet was in a 0-0 at Toulouse in May 2011.
- Since returning to L1 in 06-07, VAFC have won only 15 of their 109 away games, losing 61 and drawing 33 times.
- Danic has scored three away goals.
- COUPE DE LA LIGUE: VAFC went out 3-2 at the Round of 32 stage to fellow Ligue 1 club Dijon. Eric Bauthéac (29' pen.), Brice
Jovial (40') and Thomas Guerbert (52') scored for Dijon. Mathieu Dossevi (34') and Grégory Pujol (51') were on target for VAFC, who
had midfielder José Saez sent off ten minutes from time.
- COUPE DE FRANCE: VAFC beat holders Lille 2-1 at the Stade du Hainaut in the Round of 16. Mathieu Dossevi (71') and Vincent
Aboubakar (78') scored for VAFC. Nolan Roux (88')netted for LOSC.
- VAFC host Rennes in the quarter-finals on Wednesday March 21.
- VAFC qualified for the last 16 of the competition with a 3-1 home win over Ligue 2 side Bastia in the Round of 32. Foued Kadir (29'
and 61') and Gaël Danic (59') scored for VAFC. Ex-PSG and Monaco man Jérôme Rothen had given Bastia the lead (26' pen.).
Rothen was red carded seven minutes later.
- VAFC beat another Ligue 2 side, Le Mans, in the Round of 64 (Nicolas Isimat-Mirin 45+2', Vincent Aboubakar 73').
- SUSPENSIONS: Carlos Sanchez serves the first of a nine-game ban handed down on Thursday for his red card against
Saint-Etienne, collected for a foul on Carlos Sanchez.
- INJURIES: Gaëtan Bong hurt his foot against Saint-Etienne and was in the treatment room in midweek. Dusan Djuric (calf) is OK.
Jean-Louis Leca and Kenny Lala (both knee) are still absent.
LOSC Lille Métropole
- The 2010-11 season saw Lille break a host of club records as they swept to a Ligue1-French Cup double, bringing major silverware
to the north of France for the first time in over half a century.
- Lille had last won the league in 1954, and the Coupe de France in 1955, ending a trophy drought whose only consolations had been
four Ligue 2 titles (1964, '74, '78 and 2000) and an Intertoto Cup (2005).
- Lille have won two Ligue 1 crowns (1946, '54) and finished runners-up five times (1948, '49, '50, '51 and 2005). They have won the
French Cup five times (1946, '47, '48, '53, '55), and were beaten finalists twice (1945, '49).
- Their triumph sees them return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2006-07, when they finished second to AC
Milan in the group stage before being eliminated 2-0 on aggregate by Manchester United.
- In the 2005-06 Champions League campaign Lille played all their home matches at the Stade de France in Paris, because their
regular home - the Stadium Métropole Villeneuve d'Ascq - did not meet UEFA requirements. The club used neighbouring Lens' Stade
Bollaert for its European matches in the 2006-07 season.
- Lille earned an historic 1-0 win over Manchester United at the Stade de France in the 2005-06 Champions League and became the
first French side to register an away win over AC Milan (2-0) the following year.
- Lille finished season 2010-11 with the best attack in France (for the second year running), their 68 goals eclipsing second-placed
OM's tally of 62. Lille had two players in the top 10 of Ligue 1's goal scoring charts - Moussa Sow scoring 25 times to top the scoring
charts and Gervinho notching 15 of his own - plus ten assists.

Week 28
LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC
- Lille's Belgian prodigy Eden Hazard was voted Ligue 1 Player of the Year - the top individual honour in French football - after taking
out the Young Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010.
Valenciennes FC
- Valenciennes returned to the top flight in 2006-07 after finishing as Ligue 2 champions in 2006 - the second time in the club's history
after 1972.
- Valenciennes finished 12th last season on 48 points, but only secured their top division status in the final round of games in Week
38.
- Valenciennes drew 18 of their 38 Ligue 1 games in 2010-11. Only Auxerre (19) drew more.
- Former Nantes striker Grégory Pujol was club top scorer in 10-11 with a personal best season haul of 17 goals. Midfielder Gaël
Danic chipped in with nine.
- Coach Philippe Montanier left Valenciennes in the close season to join Real Sociedad.
- He was replaced by Daniel Sanchez who coached Tours between 2007 and 2011. He was Bordeaux's assistant coach (2001-03)
and general manager of Nagoya (JAP, 1997-99). Prior to that he was in charge of Nice's youth programme between 1988 and 1996
and had a brief spell in charge of the first team (Sep to Dec 96). Born on November 21 1953, Sanchez is hoping to complete a full
season in charge of a Ligue 1 club for the first time.
- Valenciennes have never won the French Cup or League Cup, although they did reach the French Cup final in 1951, when they lost
3-0 to Strasbourg.
- VA were relegated from Ligue 1 at the end of the 1992-93 season and the club's image was further tarnished by the match-fixing
scandal that erupted after their Week 36 match versus Marseille (a 0-0 draw). OM were subsequently stripped of the 1993 Ligue 1
crown and relegated to the second division.
- Having played at the Stade Nungesser since 1930, Valenciennes inaugurated the state of the art 25,000 capacity Stade du Hainaut
with a glamorous friendly against Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund on July 26 2011. Valenciennes lost 1-0 in front of a
crowd of 25,132.
