ANNONCE D’UN NOUVEAU DVD ET UN CD CONSACRES A JEAN LANGLAIS

En célébration du centenaire de la naissance de Jean Langlais, un DVD et un CD
sont sortis aux Etats-Unis :
I.
L’American Guild of Organists à Los Angeles a financé la production d’un DVD
créé par Mist Media (dirigé par William Mistretta, Ed.D.) intitulé Life and Music of
Jean Langlais. Ce DVD fut conçu par Ann Labounsky, Ph.D., FAGO, organiste,
professeur, disciple et spécialiste de Jean Langlais (auteur du livre Jean Langlais:
The Man and His Music, Portland, Seattle, Amadeus Press, 2000). Enregistré en
2006 à l’église de Pasadena Presbyterian à Pasadena en Californie, il présente
des photos, partitions, extraits des concerts de sa musique, ainsi que les
entretiens avec ses élèves et collègues : Marilyn Mason, Charles Dodsley Walker,
Marilou Kratzenstein, Allen Hobbs, Paul Salamunovich… et, bien entendu, avec
Jean Langlais. Ce DVD est en le format de télévision NTSC, utilisé en Amérique
du Nord et sur la plupart de PAL européens. Il est disponible pour $28 chez
Emerson Music de Montclair en Californie.
II.
« Hommage à Jean Langlais », CD d’une sélection d’œuvres de Jean Langlais
jouées par Jean Langlais et Susan Ingrid Ferré sur le Grand Orgue de la Basilique
Sainte-Clotilde à Paris, enregistré par Walter Wm. Hofheinz, 2007, TBE
Productions.
Les sélections de CD furent enregistrées « live » en deux heures lors d’une soirée
en l’automne de 1969 avec Susan Ferré et Jean Langlais sur le Grand Orgue de la
Basilique Sainte-Clotilde. Susan Ferré fut une élève ancienne de Jean Langais
(diplômée en orgue et improvisation de la Schola Cantorum à Paris, ainsi que des
université de Texas Christian University, Eastman School of Music et un Doctrat
en Musique de l’Université de North Texas) et fut son guide pour sa tournée
américaine en 1967, avant de devenir un professeur et organiste qui a dirigé le
Texas Baroque Ensemble pour plusde vingt ans. Cet enregistrment fut réalisé
sans répétition préalable. Jean Langlais a tiré les jeux lorsque Susan Ferré a joué
ses œuvres suivants : Chant héroïque, Trio, Poem of Peace, Poem of Happiness .
Ensuite, Jean Langlais a improvisé sur le Kyrie, « Orbis Factor », le Salve Regina
(Mode V) et sur deux thèmes, l’un catholique, l’autre protestant : « Veni Creator
Spiritus et « Ein’ feste Burg ». Au lieu d’enlever les imperfections des bruits de la
rue, notamment des voitures, l’enregistrement fut conservé dans son intégralité,
afin de conserver sa fraîcheur. L’édition limité de ce CD est disponible chez Susan

The new DVD, sponsored by the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Guild of Organists,
entitled "Life and Music of Jean Langlais," was conceived and is narrated by Ann
Labounsky, PhD, FAGO, organist, professor at Duquesne University, disciple and
specialist in the music of her teacher, Jean Langlais. She is author of the book, "Jean
Langlais: The Man and His Music" (Portland, Seattle, Amadeus Press, 2000).

"Hommage à Jean Langlais," a CD containing selections of works by Jean Langlais played
by Susan Ferré and three improvisations by Jean Langlais, was recorded at the Grand
Orgue of the Basilique Sainte-Clotilde in Paris, and was remastered by Walter Wm.
Hofheinz, 2007, TBE Productions.
All tracks were recorded live without edit and without retakes during three hours on an
evening in the Fall of 1969 by and for the benefit of the literary society, Avant Quart. Jean
Langlais pulled stops and sometimes operated the Swell pedal for Susan Ferré, who
played four of his works, two of which were based on the theme of her name. He then
created three distinct improvisations on well-known themes. Walter Hofheinz reconstituted
some of the original tapes, now deteriorating from age, conserving the recording in its
entirety.
In addition to her studies with Jean Langais on a Fulbright Scholarship (Diplôme d'orgue et
improvisation from the Schola Cantorum in Paris), Susan Ferré holds degrees from Texas
Christian University, the Eastman School of Music, and the DMA degree from the
University of North Texas. She guided Jean Langlais during his American tour of 1967.
She has directed the Texas Baroque Ensemble for more than twenty years.
The playlist includes the following works of Jean Langlais : Chant héroïque, Trio, Poem of
Peace (dedicated to Susan Ferré), and Poem of Happiness, followed by improvisations of
Jean Langlais on the Kyrie, « Orbis Factor », the Salve Regina (Mode V), and on two
themes, one Catholic and one Protestant : « Veni Creator » and « Ein’ feste Burg ». The
playing by Susan Ferré, clear and virtuosic in the Chant héroïque, very animated in the
Trio, poetic and peaceful in the Poem of Peace, and vigorous and triumphant in the Poem
of Happiness – transmits faithfully the thoughts of the Master Jean Langlais. The
improvisations on this CD remind us of the heritage of this art faithfully transmitted from
César Franck and from Charles Tournemire, used by Langlais to animate the liturgical
celebrations at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde during his forty-two years.
