Les lois de l’aérodynamique
Portance = P
Trainée = T
L’angle d’attaque (&) idéal serait de 45° mais d’autres facteurs , notamment aérodynamiques ,
font qu’il variera suivant les conditions atmosphériques .

THE FLIGHT OF THE DISCUS
ANGLE OF RELEASE
(Trajectory of centre of gravity and
horizontal)
ANGLE OF ATTITUDE
(Plane of Discus and horizontal)
ANGLE OF INCIDENCE
(Trajectory of centre of gravity and

- Technical Analysis
THE PREPARATION PHASE
THE GRIP
STARTING POSITION
•Hold Discus with end finger joint
• Face back of circle
•Discus rests against the base of the
throwing hand
•Balance
•Thumb rests on the Discus
•Body weight
on both feet
•Wide stance
•Concentration
•EASY preparatory
swings

Discus
- Technical Analysis
PRELIMINARY SPEED PHASE
•Pivot on ball of left foot
•Start the left side in one block
•Keep head and trunk straight
(Make the “T”)
•Large range of movement on the
left
•Right knee and leg well away
from body
•Slow motion
•Balance

BUILDING MOMENTUM PHASE
RIGHT FOOT LANDING
THE DRIVE



Left foot / Right knee drive
Keep throwing arm passive behind
body
Keep shoulder / head facing the
direction of throw as long as
possible




Right foot accelerate to land in
centre of the circle
Right foot “overtakes” the
implement
Land in “Power position” (Toes –
Knee-Nose) and make the “T”
Keep left shoulder closed

TRANSFER PHASE
“FROM POWER POSITION TO LEFT FOOT LANDING”



Right leg reaction makes the
left foot land
Right leg reaction maintains
horizontal speed
Right knee comes in direction
of throw



Upper body stays passive
Thrower keeps looking
backward
All left side under tension

THE DELIVERY




Opening of left arm and
shoulder
STRONG left side from leg to
shoulder
Right hip faces front
Right arm action



90o between shoulders / right
arm and body
Finish long in the throw
Keep head back left of foot
vertical

THE RECOVERY



Finish long and flat into the throw
Keep head and eyes on implement
Reverse feet to keep balance

The Most
Frequent Faults
The most important or dangerous faults are underlined
PREPARATION PHASE
•Poor grip – Poor position at the back of the circle
•Swings - Too many – “Ringing the salad dry
Activating a stretch reflex on the right
shoulder
Swaying out of control
PRELIMINARY SPEED PHASE (Run up)
•No body weight transfer to the left foot
•Poor pivoting technique on left foot pivot
•Pulling into the entry with head, left shoulder or even right arm
•Losing balance during pivot – No “T” position at the end of entry
•Lack of split between the knees during pivot

The Most
Frequent Faults
BULDING MOMENTUM PHASE
•Insufficient, too late or too early right knee drive
•Thrower keeps pivoting instead of driving
•Thrower “fall” down in circle
•Short range of movement – Lack of acceleration
•Left knee passes too far away from right knee
•Right foot landing” poor position, orientation or flat foot landing
•No “T” position at right foot landing
•Chin /knee/ toe line inclined too much or not enough
•Not keeping the right arm back – Low right arm

The Most
Frequent Faults
TRANSFER PHASE
•Right foot: passive – Does not keep pivoting
•Vertical action of right leg
•Left foot landing (Too late, too closed, too open)
•Premature opening of left shoulder
•Pulling with head – Premature action of right arm
•Dropping the right arm

The Most
Frequent Faults
DELIVERY PHASE
•Collapsing of left side – No left knee extension
•Pulling left shoulder too far back
•Pulling left or down with head or trunk
•Right hip does not lead right arm
•Right arm does not finish delivery at 90o from trunk
•Right arm is pulling inside circular trajectory – No follow through
•Too little range of movement
•Thrower’s body does not keep behind vertical of left foot
•Discus not delivered off index finger (Turn anti clock wise)
RECOVERY PHASE
•Start the recovery too early – Loosing balance

Un planeur, donc une habileté, des
"savoir faire"
Oublier les haies
Protocole d’échauffement
« Rentrer » vite dans le disque sans
stress
Tourner oui, mais avancer et terminer
solide
Plus d'amplitude du haut que de vitesse
de rotation
