The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the
Archdiocese of Keewatin-LePas (Canada) presented by Archbishop Sylvain
Lavoie, O.M.I., in conformity with Can. 401 § 2 of the Code of Canon Law,
and has named Rev. Fr. William Stang, O.M.I., until now the Vicar General of
the same See, as Apostolic Administrator sede vacante and at the disposition
of the Holy See for the Archdiocese of Keewatin-LePas.

Father General’s letter for February 17, 2012
Happy Feast Day!
This year we celebrate 186 years since Pope Leo XII approved our Constitutions and Rules. We celebrate this grace with great joy, thanksgiving and a
fraternal spirit among us. The Founder saw the Constitutions and Rules as
uniting the Oblates in a society in which we would become holy missionaries and be dedicated to the salvation of God’s poor. We see this expressed
in the Preface to the CC&RR.
These two dimensions of our vocation strike me in the Preface. First of all,
there is the strong expression of what burned in Eugene de Mazenod’s
missionary heart: the urgent need to evangelize, to preach the Gospel and
reawaken the faith. He reached out in bold new ways to those who had lost
the faith and had been neglected by the clergy of the time. This young
missionary was busy reaching out to those not being touched by parish
structures. He was aware of those who were being overlooked and whose
faith was dying. He sought ways to speak to them in their language and to
gather them. He met them on their own ground and took the Word to them.
He longed to bring them into contact with the Church and to reawaken
their faith so that they would come to know Jesus and become his disciples.
In the Chapter of 2010, the call made for us to Conversion in the area of
Mission asked us if we are merely satisfied with what we are doing and
whether we are simply caring for those who are already believers. We are
invited to become uncomfortable and to question ourselves. Are we seeking
to bring Jesus to those who are missing out on his Good News and to work
creatively with them? As missionaries, it is not our vocation to be content
in doing good pastoral work for the people who come to us. Like Eugene,
moved by love for Christ and the Church, we are called to notice people
who don’t get touched by the pastoral structures, those on the fringes and
those who suffer in poverty in its many faces. We seek them out and communicate the Gospel in their language so that God’s grace might draw them
to his Son and to the Church.
The other dimension which strongly appears in the Preface is the holiness

of the missionaries who will be preachers of the Good News. To accomplish
the great mission before them, the missionaries must be true disciples of
Jesus Christ and transformed by the Word they preach. The call to conversion is a commitment to give ourselves in an ongoing, disciplined way
to the transforming process of God’s grace. Over a lifelong journey, the
Spirit will fashion us into truer images and likenesses of God. What does
holiness mean for us today? How do we live the Founder’s mandate: “They
must strive to be saints”?
Our CC&RR guide us in an understanding of Oblate holiness, a lifelong
journey into Jesus, the Savior. Prayer, individual and communal; a life
founded on the sacraments and the Word of God; apostolic communal life;
a relationship to Mary; living the fullness of our four vows; and qualities
like generosity, joy, humility, forgiveness and hospitality are essential to
our growth in holiness found in our CC&RR. Also part of Oblate holiness
expressed in our CC&RR are compassion; solidarity with the poor; hunger
for justice; a capacity for dialog, mutual respect and responsibility; a simple
life that respects the environment. We return to our OMI CC&RR to deepen
this sense of holiness which is lived in relation to God, to our neighbor,
to our very self and to creation . Do you have a copy readily accessible?
This February 17th let us ask for the grace to renew our missionary vision
and our thirst for holiness. Together, let us give thanks for the Congregation
and celebrate this day by renewing our commitment as Missionary Oblates
of Mary Immaculate. I invite us to take some time together to share “signs
of life” that we see in the Congregation.

Avec joie et action de grâce
Lettre du Père Général pour le 17 février 2012
Bonne fête!
Cette année, nous célébrons la 186e année de l’approbation de nos
Constitutions et Règles, par le Pape Léon XII. Nous célébrons cette grâce
avec grande joie et action de grâce, dans un esprit fraternel entre nous. Le
Fondateur a compris que les Constitutions et Règles devaient unir les Oblats
dans une société dans laquelle ils deviendraient de saints missionnaires
et s’engageraient au salut des pauvres de Dieu. C’est ce qui est exprimé
dans la Préface des Constitutions et Règles.
Dans la Préface, je suis frappé par ces deux dimensions de notre vocation.
Tout d’abord, ce qui brûlait dans le cœur missionnaire d’Eugène de
Mazenod : le besoin urgent d’évangéliser, de prêcher l’Evangile, de
réveiller la foi, y est exprimé avec force. Il a rejoint de façon audacieuse
et nouvelle ceux qui avaient perdu la foi et qui étaient négligés par le
clergé de l’époque. Le jeune missionnaire s’employait à rejoindre ceux
que les structures paroissiales ne touchaient plus. Il avait conscience de
ceux qu’on oubliait et qui perdaient la foi. Il a cherché des moyens pour
leur parler dans leur langue et les rassembler. Il les a rencontrés sur leur
terrain et leur a apporté la Parole. Il avait hâte de les mettre en contact avec
l’Eglise et de réveiller leur foi, afin qu’ils en viennent à connaître Jésus et
à devenir ses disciples.
Au Chapitre de 2010, l’appel à nous convertir dans le domaine de la Mission
demande si nous nous contentons simplement de ce que nous faisons et
si nous nous occupons seulement de ceux qui sont déjà croyants. Nous
sommes invités à nous sentir mal à l’aise et à nous remettre en question.
Cherchons-nous à apporter Jésus à ceux que la Bonne Nouvelle n’atteint
pas et à nous montrer créatifs avec eux ? Comme missionnaires, ce n’est
pas notre vocation de nous contenter de faire un bon travail pastoral pour
des gens qui viennent à nous. À l’exemple d’Eugène, animés par l’amour
du Christ et de l’Eglise, nous sommes appelés à faire attention à ceux qui
ne sont pas touchés par les structures pastorales, à ceux qui sont sur les
marges, à ceux qui souffrent de la pauvreté aux multiples visages. Nous les
rechercherons pour leur communiquer l’Evangile dans leur langue, afin

que la grâce de Dieu puisse les attirer à son Fils et à l’Eglise.
L’autre dimension fortement exprimée dans la Préface est la sainteté des
missionnaires, prédicateurs de la Bonne Nouvelle. Pour remplir cette grande
mission, les missionnaires doivent être de vrais disciples de Jésus Christ
et être transformés par la Parole qu’ils annoncent. L’appel à la conversion
est un engagement à nous donner nous-mêmes de façon permanente et
disciplinée au processus transformateur de la grâce de Dieu. Dans un
voyage de toute une vie, l’Esprit nous façonnera toujours davantage à
l’image et à la ressemblance de Dieu. Que signifie la sainteté pour nous
aujourd’hui ? Comment vivons-nous la recommandation du Fondateur: « Ils
doivent s’efforcer à devenir des saints ? »
Nos CC&RR nous guident dans la compréhension de la sainteté oblate
comme itinéraire de toute une vie vers Jésus, le Sauveur. Prière personnelle
et communautaire, une vie fondée sur les sacrements et la Parole de Dieu,
vie apostolique communautaire, relation à Marie, vivre nos quatre vœux
à fond, enfin, des qualités telles que générosité, joie, humilité, pardon et
hospitalité sont essentielles à la croissance de notre sainteté selon nos
CC&RR. De plus, font aussi partie de la sainteté telle qu’exprimée dans
les CC&RR : la compassion, la solidarité avec les pauvres, la soif de justice,
la capacité de dialogue, le respect et la responsabilité mutuelle, une vie
simple qui respecte l’environnement. Revenons à nos CC&RR OMI afin
d’approfondir ce sens de sainteté vécu en relation à Dieu, à notre prochain, à
notre moi intime et à la création. En avez-vous un exemplaire sous la main ?
Ce 17 février, demandons la grâce de renouveler notre vision missionnaire
et notre aspiration à la sainteté. Ensemble, rendons grâce pour la
Congrégation et célébrons cette journée en renouvelant notre engagement
de Missionnaires Oblats de Marie Immaculée. Je nous invite à prendre
quelque temps ensemble pour échanger sur les « signes de vie » que nous
voyons dans la Congrégation.

“We must spare no effort…”

“We must spare no effort” (Nihil linquendum inausum…) wrote our
Founder in a manuscript of the Preface of our first Constitutions and Rules
in 1825. (CCRR, 2000, p. 22) I am sure that this recommendation of our
Founder was present in the hearts all of the General Council members
during the last Plenary Session, because we did spare no effort in revising
and planning our service to the Congregation.
The Main Theme of our Plenary Session was planning the future years,
without forgetting the usual Oblate issues that the Superior General has to
decide in Plenary Session. The five following Oblates were invited to our
Plenary Session to share their experience and wisdom: Eugene King, omi,
on Leadership; Gregorio Iriarte, omi, on Community Life; Bernard Keradec,
omi, on Formation; Robert Wright, omi, on Mission and Tim Coonen, omi,
on Finances. Each one of them shared their reflections and suggestions
with the Superior General and Council members. Together we delineated
the path to follow during the coming years, taking into account the many
upcoming Oblate happenings. This sharing brought all of us to a greater
understanding and appreciation of the urgency to take seriously the Five
Chapter Calls to Conversion and the enduring value of our Charism,
expressed in our Constitutions and Rules.
We are pleased to have named a new Provincial Superior for the Anglo-Irish
Province and confirmed the election for a second term of the Provincial
Superior and Council of the Argentina-Chile Province. We wish them
a very fruitful Oblate ministry. We are glad that everything is falling in
place concerning our next General Government Meeting which will be a
Joint-Session with the Africa-Madagascar Region in Yaounde, Cameroun.We
are filled with “holy” pride, to announce the restructuring of the Provinces
of Italy and Spain, becoming one Oblate Unit, the Mediterranean Province.
We congratulate them, as they officially become one on May 21, 2012. We
even share an inner peace, in spite of the global financial crisis, having
approved the Yearly Budgets for the General Administration, General House
and the International Roman Scholasticate.We heartily thank all the Oblate
Units that have contributed with generous solidarity to the Congregation,

making it possible that all Oblates wherever we may be “ will spare no
effort to awaken or to reawaken the faith in the people to whom we are sent,
and we will help them to discover ‘who Christ is’.” C7
Restructuring
Establishment of the Mediterranean Province
The Superior General, with the consent of his Council, has adopted the
following resolutions to establish the Mediterranean Province, in accordance
with C. 98:
• He has suppressed the Provinces of Italy and Spain.
• He has erected the Mediterranean Province composed of the union
of the two former provinces mentioned above, including their
Delegations and Missions.
• He has approved, “ad experimentum” for three years, the Statutes
of the Mediterranean Province.
All of these decisions will be operative as of May 21, 2012, date on which will
be in effect the newly named provincial administration which the Superior
General in Council will appoint during the next plenary session, after having
consulted the Oblates who will form the new Province. We congratulate all
those who, with effort and enthusiasm, have committed themselves in recent
years to this process of restructuring and have made it possible.

Provincial Superiors
Anglo-Irish: Named to be the next Provincial of the Anglo-Irish Province
is Father Raymond Warren. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1963, he entered
the Pre-novitiate at Belmont in 1982. The following year he was admitted
to the Novitiate and professed his first vows in 1984. On December 8, 1987,
he made his perpetual vows at Belmont House in Dublin, and was ordained
to the priesthood in November 1989.
Upon receiving his first obedience to the Anglo - Irish Province, Father
Warren worked for many years in parish ministry, starting with the Parish
of Sacred Heart in London, England. He also served as Provincial Councillor
from 1997 to 2006 and as Vicar Provincial from 2006 to the present.
Argentina-Chile: Elected to a second term as Provincial of the ArgentinaChile Province is Fr. Wladimir Rojas.

Approvals and Decisions
Interchapter meeting
Following Rule 128e as modified at our last General Chapter, the Superior
General in Council in plenary session has called a meeting of the Provincials
with the Central Government. A letter of consultation is being sent out to
all Provincials, in order to establish the agenda of such meeting, which will
take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from April 22 to May 3, 2013. The Superior
General has also decided to invite to this meeting all the Delegation
Superiors in the Congregation as well as the Superiors of the three Missions
of Asia-Oceania, the Region which will host the Interchapter meeting.
According to R 128e “The principal purpose of such a meeting is to evaluate
the extent to which decisions taken in Chapter have been carried out, to
encourage further implementation of such decisions, and to provide for
the remote preparation of the next Chapter.” We would like to invite all the
Oblates and the whole Oblate Family to pray for this event, which will be of
particular importance, given that it will start preparing the Chapter which
will mark the 200 years of our foundation.

Session plénière – Rome

« Il faut mettre tout en œuvre… » (Nihil linquendum inausum…) écrivait notre
Fondateur dans le manuscrit de la Préface de nos Constitutions et Règles
de 1825 (CCRR de 2000, p. 18). Je suis certain que cette recommandation
de notre Fondateur était présente dans le cœur des membres du conseil
général au cours de la dernière Session plénière, parce que nous n’avons
omis aucun effort à réviser et à planifier notre service de la Congrégation.
Le principal sujet de notre session plénière a été la planification des années
à venir, sans oublier les questions à traiter par le Supérieur général lors
d’une session plénière. Les cinq Oblats suivants ont été invités à nous faire
part, durant la session, de leur expérience et de leur sagesse : Eugene King,
o.m.i., sur le leadership, Gregorio Iriarte, o.m.i., sur la vie communautaire ;
Bernard Keradec, o.m.i., sur la formation ; Robert Wright, o.m.i., sur la
mission et Timothy Coonen, o.m.i., sur les finances. Chacun d’eux a présenté
ses réflexions et ses suggestions au Supérieur général et aux membres du
Conseil. Nous avons ensemble défini la voie à suivre au cours des années
à venir, en tenant compte des nombreux événements prochains dans la
vie oblate. Ce partage nous a conduits à une meilleure compréhension du
besoin pressant que nous avons de prendre au sérieux les cinq appels du
Chapitre à la conversion et de la valeur toujours actuelle de notre charisme,
tel que l’expriment nos Constitutions et Règles.
Nous sommes heureux d’avoir nommé un nouveau Provincial pour la
Province Anglo-Irlandaise et confirmé l’élection, pour un second mandat,
du Provincial et des membres du conseil de la Province d’Argentine-Chili.
Nous leur souhaitons un très fructueux ministère. Nous nous réjouissons
aussi de voir que tout est en place pour notre prochaine réunion conjointe
du Gouvernement central avec la Région d’Afrique-Madagascar, à Yaoundé,
Cameroun. L’annonce de la restructuration des Provinces d’Italie et
d’Espagne suscite en nous une «sainte» fierté; elles formeront une seule
Province, la Province de Méditerranée. Nous les félicitons pour leur union
qui entrera officiellement en vigueur le 21 mai 2012. L’approbation des
budgets annuels de l’Administration générale, de la Maison générale et

du Scolasticat international de Rome, malgré la crise financière mondiale,
a même été pour nous source d’apaisement. Nous remercions de tout
cœur les Provinces qui, dans un geste généreux de solidarité à l’endroit
de la Congrégation, ont apporté leur contribution, rendant possible que
tous les Oblats, où qu’ils soient «mettent tout en œuvre pour éveiller ou
réveiller la foi de ceux à qui ils sont envoyés et leur faire découvrir «qui
est le Christ» (C 7).
Restructuration
Création de la Province de Méditerranée
Le Supérieur général en conseil a pris les résolutions suivantes en vue de
l’établissement de la Province de Méditerranée, selon la constitution 98 :
• Il a supprimé les Provinces d’Italie et d’Espagne.
• Il a érigé la Province de Méditerranée, qui sera formée de l’union
de ces deux anciennes Provinces, incluant leurs Délégations et
leurs Missions.
• Il a approuvé, à titre d’expérience pour trois ans, les statuts de la
Province de Méditerranée.
Toutes ces décisions entreront en vigueur le 21 mai 2012, date à laquelle
entrera aussi en vigueur la nomination de la nouvelle administration
provinciale que le Supérieur général en conseil fera lors de la prochaine
session plénière, après avoir consulté les Oblats qui formeront la nouvelle
Province. Félicitations à tous ceux qui, au cours des dernières années,
se sont engagés avec énergie et enthousiasme dans ce processus de
restructuration et l’ont rendu possible.

Angleterre-Irlande: Le prochain Provincial de la Province Anglo-Irlandaise
sera le père Raymond Warren. Né à Dublin, Irlande, en 1963, il est entré au
prénoviciat de Belmont en 1982. L’année suivante, il était admis au noviciat,
où il a prononcé ses premiers vœux en 1984. Le 8 décembre 1987, il faisait
son oblation perpétuelle à Belmont House, à Dublin. Il a été ordonné prêtre
en novembre 1989.
Après avoir reçu sa première obédience pour la Province Anglo-Irlandaise,
le père Warren a travaillé pendant de nombreuses années en paroisse, à

commencer par la paroisse Sacré-Cœur, à Londres, Angleterre. Il a, aussi,
été conseiller provincial de 1997 à 2006 et vicaire provincial de 2006 à
nos jours.
Argentine-Chili: Le père Wladimir Rojas a été élu Provincial de la
Province d’Argentine-Chili pour un second mandat.

Réunion intercapitulaire
Suivant la règle 128e, telle que modifiée au cours du dernier Chapitre
général, le Supérieur général en conseil, en session plénière, a convoqué
des Provinciaux à une rencontre avec le Gouvernement central. Une lettre
de consultation a été envoyée à tous les Provinciaux dans le but d’établir
le programme de cette rencontre, qui aura lieu du 22 avril au 3 mai 2013,

«Le but d'une telle rencontre, rappelle la règle 128e, est avant tout d'évaluer
la mise en application des décisions prises par le Chapitre précédent,
d'encourager la mise en pratique ultérieure de ces décisions, et d'assurer
la préparation éloignée du Chapitre suivant.» Nous invitons tous les Oblats
et toute la famille oblate à prier pour cet événement qui revêt une grande
importance, étant donné qu’on y entreprendra la préparation du Chapitre
qui marquera le 200e anniversaire de notre fondation.

Rethinking the Mission and Oblate Presence in Africa
in light of the Chapter of 2010.

The Plenary Session of the Central Government, followed by a Joint Session
between the Superiors of the sixteen Oblate Units of Africa-Madagascar
with the members of the Central Government, took place in Yaoundé,
Cameroun, from 22 -28 April 2012. The Joint Session is a privileged moment
where the members of the Central Government come together with the
leadership of a Region to review the actual state of Oblate life and mission
in the Region, to explore together how best to deepen and live the Oblate
charism and to know each other better as brother Oblates. The theme of the
Joint Session was “Rethinking the Mission and Oblate Presence in Africa
in light of the Chapter of 2010.” These days of prayer, reflection, study,
assessment of challenges and questions to one another were evaluated as
a successful encounter between the Oblate Superiors of the Region and
the twelve members of the Central Government.
The journey of the General Administration started at least a week before
the Joint Session with visits to the Oblate Units of the Region. We had
wonderful experiences being close to Oblates in mission and to the poor
whom they serve. Everywhere we were warmly welcomed in the tradition
of Oblate hospitality. As we lived with Oblates in the midst of ministry and
apostolic community, we sought to listen carefully to their joys and struggles
in mission. We regret that it was not possible to visit the Mission of Angola
because of difficulties in obtaining the visa to that country.
Throughout the Joint Session, the conversation was focused on the reality
and the mission of the Oblates in the Africa-Madagascar Region in light
of the Call to Conversion from the Chapter of 2010. Each of the Calls, viz.,
Community, Mission, Service of Leadership and Authority, Formation and
Financial Stewardship provided a point of departure from which to discuss
areas of grace and challenges. Our time together was immersed in prayer
and the Breaking of the Bread in a joyous spirit. The weather was fine with

much rain, and in African understanding, a sign of blessings. When we
parted, there was a great bonding that had taken place. The hospitality of
the Oblates of Cameroun was excellent.We thank the Provincial, Fr Raymond
Nani, OMI and all the Oblates of the Province very much for their attention
and assistance.
The Joint Session helped members of the Central Government to know the
reality of the Region of Africa-Madagascar and all the participants gained
a better understanding of the Oblate mission. We pray it will bring many
Blessings to the Congregation and to the Africa – Madagascar Region, as we
look forward to celebrate 200 years of our existence as Missionary Oblates
of Mary Immaculate in 2016.
Provincial Superior
Mediterranean: Named to be the first Provincial of the Mediterranean
Province is Father Alberto Gnemmi. He was born in Fara Novarese, in the
diocese of Novara, Italy, on August 13, 1964. Before applying to join the
prenovitiate community in Marino, in 1988, he finished his studies in Milan,
achieving a PhD in Church history, and was elected a local councilor in his
home town. In 1989 he was admitted to the Novitiate and professed his first
vows the following year. On May 21, 1994, he made his perpetual vows, and
was ordained to the priesthood in April 1995. Fr. Gnemmi also graduated
from the Gregorian University in Rome, receiving a master's degree in
Christology. Upon receiving his first obedience to the Italian Province, Father
Alberto worked in parish ministry in Aosta. He also served as Provincial
Councillor from 2004 to 2007, as Superior of the Provincial House in Frascati,
and as Provincial Treasurer from 2006 to the present.

A new edition of our Constitutions and Rules
A new edition of our Constitutions and Rule will soon see the light of day.
It will include the changes made by the General Chapters of 2004 and
2010 and will be printed in English, French and Spanish. A copy for each
Oblate is planned, as well as copies for all of our novitiates. We would like
to make this occasion a significant event for our personal and community
lives. To that end, we would like to suggest that the handing over of this
new edition of the Constitutions and Rules take place in the context of a
community celebration. Therefore, we will be proposing the outline of a
celebration that could be adopted as is or adapted according to the place
and circumstances.We hope that the reception of this text will help us enter
into the preparation of the second centennial of our hisotry and will renew
us in the spirit of our vocation, according to the invitation that comes from
our holy Founder (see the Preface of the Constitutions and Rules.)

The Superior General in Council received and approved the audited
financial statements of the General Administration. They also reviewed
the financial statements of the Trusts which were received and approved
by their respective Trustees. As part of this process, the external auditor,
Mr. Donal O'Brien, partner in O'Brien Harnett and Associates met with the
Superior General and Council.

La Session plénière du Gouvernement central, qui a précédé la session
conjointe des Supérieurs des seize provinces et délégations oblates
d’Afrique-Madagascar avec les membres du Gouvernement central, a eu
lieu à Yaoundé, au Cameroun, du 22 au 28 avril 2012. La session conjointe est
un moment privilégié où les membres du Gouvernement central s’unissent
aux responsables d’une Région pour faire l’examen de la vie et de la mission
des Oblats dans la Région, découvrir ensemble comment approfondir
et vivre pleinement le charisme, et mieux se connaître les uns les autres
comme des frères. La Session conjointe avait pour thème : «Repenser la
mission et la présence des Oblats en Afrique à la lumière du Chapitre de
2010.» Ces journées de prière, de réflexion, d’étude, d’évaluation des
défis à relever et de questionnement réciproque ont contribué au succès
de cette rencontre des supérieurs de la Région avec les douze membres
du Gouvernement central.
Le voyage de l’Administration générale avait commencé plus d’une semaine
auparavant par la visite des Provinces et des Délégations de la Région. Le
fait d’être près des Oblats en mission et près des pauvres qu’ils servent a
été pour nous source d’expériences merveilleuses. Partout nous avons été
accueillis chaleureusement selon la tradition d’hospitalité oblate. En vivant
avec les Oblats dans leur ministère et leur communauté apostolique, nous
avons voulu porter une oreille attentive à leurs joies et à leurs difficultés
missionnaires. C’est à regret que nous n’avons pas pu visiter la mission
d’Angola en raison de la difficulté d’obtenir des visas pour ce pays.
Tout au cours de la Session conjointe, les échanges ont porté sur la réalité
de la vie et de la mission des Oblats dans la Région d’Afrique et de
Madagascar, à la lumière de l’appel à la conversion lancé par le Chapitre
de 2010. Chacun des appels, à savoir, la communauté, la mission, le service

de l’autorité, la formation, la gestion des finances, a servi de point de
départ à des discussions sur la grâce et les défis. Le temps passé ensemble
a été baigné d’un esprit de joie dans la prière et le partage du pain. La
température était clémente, avec beaucoup de pluie, ce qui est, dans le
contexte africain, un signe de bénédiction. Lors de notre départ, des liens
véritables s’étaient noués. L’hospitalité des Oblats du Cameroun a été
excellente. Nous remercions grandement le Provincial, le père Raymond
Nani, o.m.i., et tous les Oblats de la Province pour leur accueil et l’aide
qu’ils nous ont apportée.
La Session conjointe a permis aux membres du Gouvernement central
de saisir la réalité de la Région d’Afrique et de Madagascar; tous les
participants ont acquis une meilleure perception de la mission des
Oblats. Nous prions pour que cela soit une source de bénédictions pour
la Congrégation et pour la Région d’Afrique et de Madagascar, alors que
nous nous préparons à célébrer, en 2016. le deux centième anniversaire de
notre existence comme Missionnaires Oblats de Marie Immaculée.

Provincial
Méditerranée: Le père Alberto Gnemmi a été nommé premier provincial
de la Province Méditerranée. Il est né à Fara Novarese, dans le diocèse de
Novara, Italie, le 13 août 1964. Avant de demander à entrer au prénoviciat de
Marino en 1988, il a terminé ses études à Milan avec un doctorat en histoire
de l’Église et a été élu conseiller municipal de sa ville natale. En 1989, il
était admis au noviciat. Il a prononcé ses premiers vœux l’année suivante.
Il faisait son oblation perpétuelle le 21 mai 1994 et a été ordonné prêtre en
avril 1995. Le père Gnemmi est aussi diplômé de l’université Grégorienne
de Rome avec une maîtrise en christologie. Après avoir reçu sa première
obédience pour la Province d’Italie, le père Gnemmi a travaillé en paroisse
à Aoste. Il a été aussi conseiller provincial de 2004 à 2007, supérieur de la
maison provinciale à Frascati et trésorier provincial de 2006 à nos jours.

Plenary Session – Rome
September 11 -- October 9
Planning the future of the JPIC General Service
The Main Theme for this plenary session was the presentation and
evaluation of the General Service of OMI JPIC. “To develop suitable
directives and provide the necessary support to promote JPIC ministry”
was one of the resolutions from the 2010 General Chapter, an expression
of the call to conversion. Facilitating the Central Government’s discussions
and evaluation during two full days was Fr. Francisco O'Conaire, OFM, who
serves as the JPIC coordinator for the Union of Superiors General in Rome.
The Director of OMI JPIC, Camille Piché, also participated and shared an
evaluation of his experiences in JPIC animation ministry of the past three
years. Through these meetings, some proposals were made for the future
of JPIC in order to follow through with the resolution of the Chapter.
The Central Government began the plenary session with their annual
retreat from September 3-8, 2012, in the Cenacle Sisters’ retreat center in
Montauto, Italy. The retreat preacher was Fr. Sylvester David, OMI, president
of St. Joseph Theological Institute in Cedara, South Africa. During the time
of prayer and reflection, the group traveled one afternoon in pilgrimage
to nearby LaVerna and the Franciscan Shrine of the Stigmata of St. Francis.
Even the retreat center itself was the site of a visit by St. Francis upon his visit
to LaVerna, so the spirit of St. Francis and his lived experience of poverty
and the Cross of Christ was all around us.
As we began the plenary session, and with having had several months of
orientation and preparation for his new position, on September 8th, Marc
Dessureault officially took over his responsibilities as Treasurer General for
the Congregation. We are grateful to Marc for his availability to accept his
new responsibility and to his province, Notre-Dame-du-Cap, for allowing
him to come.We sincerely thank Rufus Whitley for his 12 years of dedicated
service as Treasurer General of the Congregation.
An important moment of the meeting time was spent in leadership appointment,
as the Superior General in council, following the appropriate processes of
consultations, discernment and election reports, made the appointment
of provincials for the provinces of Australia, Namibia and Poland and gave

confirmation to the provincial elections held in the provinces of Bolivia and Brazil.
A significant amount of the time during this session both in committees and
in the plenary session was spent planning the programs and schedules for
the Asia-Oceania Joint Session and the Interchapter of 2013 which will be
held in Bangkok, Thailand. The plans for the Triennium commemoration
of the 200th anniversary of the Congregation which will be presented and
discussed at the Interchapter were also refined and prepared.
Provincial Superiors
Brazil: Fr. Francisco Rubeaux is confirmed to be the next Provincial
of the Province of Brazil. François Jean Paul Rubeaux was born in 1939 in
Montmorency, Diocese of Versailles, in France. Before entering the Oblate
novitiate at La Brosse-Montceaux, in 1962, he graduated from the Minor
Seminary in Versailles, completed 2 years of studies in philosophy and
theology in the Major Seminary of his diocese of origin, and finished a 25
month military service. After profession of first vows in 1963, he continued
his studies in Solignac, where he professed perpetually in 1966 and was
ordained priest in November of the same year.
Upon receiving his first obedience to the then Delegation of Brasil-Belem in 1967,
he has served in parish work, in teaching, in formation and in the leadership of
that Unit. In 1979, he was appointed as Vicar Provincial and in 1995 as Superior
of the Delegation. After the erection of a new scholasticate in Belem in 1996, he
became its first Superior and in 2001, the Superior of the scholasticate of Brazil
in Sao Paolo. After the erection of the new Province of Brazil, he served as its
first Councillor since 2003 until his election as Provincial.
Bolivia: Fr. Marcos Verberckt has been confirmed as Provincial of the
Province of Bolivia. Born in Deurne, Belgium, in 1965, he entered the
Major Seminary of the diocese of Antwerp in 1983. Four years later, having
completed his studies in philosophy and in theology, he asked to be admitted
to the Oblate novitiate in Velaines, where he made his first profession in
1988. The next year he went to the then Vice-Province of Bolivia for a two
year regency and professed perpetually in 1991, in Korbeek-Lo, Belgium.
Ordained to the priesthood in his native village of Borsbeek in 1991, Fr.
Marcos received his first obedience for the Vice-Province of Bolivia where

he worked until 1996, when he came back to Belgium upon receiving the
obedience to the then Vice-Province of Belgium North. In 2002 Fr.Verberckt
received a new obedience for the Vice-Province of Bolivia where he has
worked in pastoral ministry. The new Provincial served as member of the
Provincial Council of Bolivia from 2003 to 2009, and as a Provincial Treasurer
from 2007 to 2009.
Australia: Fr. General has appointed Father Leo Andrew Mifsud to be the
new Provincial of the Province of Australia. Born in 1955 in Zejtun, Malta, he
emigrated with his family in 1963 to Australia. He entered the Novitiate at
Mulgrave in 1976, made his first profession the following year and continued
his formation at St Mary’s Scholasticate. After his perpetual vows in 1980
and ordination to the priesthood in Sefton, in 1981, he received his first
obedience to the then Vice-Province of Australia.
Fr. Leo served in parish ministry in Australia and in New Zealand, was
responsible for pre-novices, and worked as a chaplain of the Australian
army. He is also known for his artistic skills. In 2010, Fr. Mifsud was appointed
Superior of the St Mary's Scholasticate in Mulgrave. He has been a member
of the Provincial Council from 2009 to the present.
Poland: Appointed to a second term as Provincial of the Province of Poland
is Fr. Ryszard Szmydki.
Namibia: Fr. Linus Ngenomesho is appointed to a second term as
Provincial of the Province of Namibia.

Aix-en-Provence
By a decree of the Superior General signed on 8 October 2012, the
community of Aix-en-Provence came under the direct jurisdiction of the
Superior General. Special statutes are being prepared to explain, manage
and define the internal organization of the local community, its life and
mission, as well as its relations with the local Church and the General
Administration. An association recognized by the French government
-- Centre International de Mazenod -- was established to enable the

community to play its role vis-à-vis the Congregation and under the direct
responsibility of the Superior General.
While the renovation of the house in Aix-en-Provence continues at a pace
that will allow us to resume operations in early 2013, the community is
beginning to take shape.
The Superior General has named Fr. Saverio Zampa as superior and three
other Oblates as members of this community: Brother Benoît Dosquet -who is already in Aix and who is overseeing the work being done in the
house -- and Fathers Joseph Bois (Province of France) and Joseph LaBelle
(United States Province). These Oblates, to whom Father General will soon
add a fifth person, have received their obedience for the community of Aix
(General Administration).
The activities of this community, defined in the statutes as to its nature and
structure, will mainly serve the Congregation and the greater Mazenodian family.

Session plénière – Rome
11 septembre – 9 octobre
L’avenir du Service général de JPIC
La dernière session plénière a porté principalement sur l’examen et à
l’évaluation du Service général oblat de Justice, paix et intégrité de la
création (JPIC). Dans l’appel à la conversion lancé par le Chapitre général
de 2010, une des résolutions veut que « les responsables des Unités et
Régions de la Congrégation établissent des directives appropriées et
fournissent le soutien nécessaire pour promouvoir le ministère du JPIC
dans la mission.» Le père Francisco O’Conaire, o.f.m., qui occupe le poste
de coordonnateur de JPIC auprès de l’Union des Supérieurs généraux
à Rome, a servi pendant deux jours entiers, d’animateur durant les
discussions portant sur l’évaluation du service. Le directeur du Service, le
père Camille Piché, a aussi pris part à ces discussions et fait l’évaluation
de ce qu’il a accompli à la tête de ce service au cours des trois dernières
années. Au cours de ces réunions, on a fait des propositions concernant
l’avenir du service dans le but de donner suite à la résolution du Chapitre.
La session plénière du Gouvernement central a débuté par la retraite
annuelle du 3 au 8 septembre 2012, à la maison de retraite des Sœurs
du Cénacle à Montauto, Italie. Le prédicateur a en été le père Sylvester
David, o.m.i., président de l’Institut de théologie Saint-Joseph de Cedara,
en Afrique du Sud. Durant le temps de prière et de réflexion, le groupe
de retraitants s’est rendu en pèlerinage, un après-midi, au sanctuaire
franciscain voisin des Stigmates de saint François, à La Verna. La maison de
retraite elle-même a fait l’objet d’une visite du saint lors de son passage à
La Verna. L’esprit de saint François avec son expérience de la pauvreté et
de la Croix du Christ nous imprégnait tous.
En entreprenant la session plénière, après avoir eu plusieurs mois de
préparation en vue de son nouveau poste, le père Marc Dessureault, entrait
officiellement, le 8 septembre, en fonction comme Trésorier général de
la Congrégation. Nous voulons remercier Marc pour sa disponibilité à
assumer cette nouvelle responsabilité et sa Province, Notre-Dame du Cap,
pour avoir permis qu’il puisse le faire. Nous remercions sincèrement le
père Rufus Whitley pour les 12 ans de services dévoués rendus à titre de
Trésorier général de la Congrégation.

La nomination à divers postes de responsabilité a constitué une étape
importante de la session. Le Supérieur général en conseil, à la suite de
consultations, de démarches de discernement et de rapports d’élections,
a procédé à la nomination des provinciaux des Provinces d’Australie, de
Namibie et de Pologne, et confirmé l’élection des provinciaux des Provinces
de Bolivie et du Brésil.
Durant cette session, une bonne partie du temps passé en comités
comme en plénières a été consacré à la planification du programme et du
calendrier de la session conjointe avec la Région d’Asie-Océanie et de
la réunion intercapitulaire de 2013 qui auront lieu à Bangkok, Thaïlande.
On a mis au point le programme de la commémoration triennale du 200e
anniversaire de la Congrégation qui sera soumis pour discussion à la
réunion intercapitulaire
Élections et nominations
Provinciaux
Brésil : l’élection du père François Rubeaux à titre de prochain Provincial
de la Province du Brésil a été confirmée. François Jean-Paul Rubeaux est
né en 1939 à Montmorency, diocèse de Versailles, France. Avant son entrée
au noviciat de LaBrosse-Montceaux, en 1962, il avait fait ses études au petit
séminaire de Versailles, puis celles de philosophie et de théologie au grand
séminaire de son diocèse d’origine et complété son service militaire de
vingt-cinq mois. Après avoir prononcé ses premiers vœux en 1963, il a
poursuivi ses études au scolasticat de Solignac, où il a fait son oblation
perpétuelle en 1966 et été ordonné prêtre en novembre de la même année.
Il a reçu sa première obédience pour la Délégation d’alors de Brésil-Belém,
en 1967. Il a travaillé en paroisse, dans l’enseignement, dans la formation et
dans l’animation de la Délégation. En 1979, il était nommé Vicaire provincial
et en 1995, Supérieur de la Délégation. À la suite de l’érection d’un nouveau
scolasticat à Belém, en 1996, il en devenait le premier supérieur et, en
2001, supérieur du scolasticat de São Paulo, au Brésil. Après l’érection de
la nouvelle Province du Brésil, il en a été le premier conseiller de 2003 à
son élection comme Provincial.
Bolivie : l’élection du père Marc Verberckt au poste de Provincial de la
Province de Bolivie a été confirmée. Né à Neurne, Belgique, en 1965, il est
entré au grand séminaire du diocèse d’Anvers en 1983. Quatre ans plus tard,

après avoir terminé ses études de philosophie et de théologie, il demandait
d’être admis au noviciat oblat de Velaines, où il a fait sa première profession
religieuse en 1988. L’année suivante il partait pour la Vice-Province de
Bolivie faire deux ans de stage. Il a fait son oblation perpétuelle en 1991,
à Koebeek-Lo, Belgique.
Ordonné prêtre dans son village natal de Borsbeek en 1991, le père
Verberckt a reçu sa première obédience pour la Vice-Province de
Bolivie, où il a travaillé jusqu’à 1996, année de son retour en Belgique,
avec une obédience pour la Vice-Province d’alors de Belgique-Nord. En
2002, le père recevait de nouveau une obédience pour la Vice-Province
de Bolivie, où il a exercé un ministère pastoral. Le nouveau Provincial a
été membre du conseil provincial de Bolivie de 2003 à 2009 et trésorier
provincial de 2007 à 2009.
Australie : Le Supérieur général a nommé le père Leo Andrew Mifsud
Provincial de la Province d’Australie pour un premier mandat. Né en 1955
à Zejtun, Malte, il a émigré en Australie avec sa famille en 1963. Il est entré
au noviciat de Mulgrave en 1976, a fait sa première profession religieuse
l’année suivante et complété sa formation première au scolasticat St. Mary.
Après son oblation perpétuelle en 1980 et son ordination à la prêtrise à
Sefton, en 1981, il a reçu sa première obédience pour la Vice-Province
d’Australie d’alors.
Le père Mifsud a travaillé en paroisse en Australie et en Nouvelle-Zélande, a
été responsable des prénovices et été aumônier dans l’armée australienne.
Il est aussi connu pour ses talents artistiques. En 2012, le père Mifsud était
nommé supérieur du scolasticat St. Mary de Mulgrave. Il a fait partie du
conseil provincial de 2009 à nos jours.
Pologne : Le père Ryszard Szmydki a été nommé Provincial de la Province
de Pologne pour un second mandat.
Namibie : Le père Linus Ngenomesho a été nommé Provincial de la
Province de Namibie pour un second mandat.

Aix-en-Provence
Par un décret du Supérieur général signé le 8 octobre 2012, la communauté
d'Aix-en-Provence est passée sous la juridiction directe du Supérieur
général. Des statuts spéciaux se préparent pour éclairer, régir et définir
le régime interne de cette communauté locale, sa vie et sa mission, ainsi
que ses relations avec l'Église locale et l'Administration générale. Une
association reconnue par l'État français - Centre international Eugène de
Mazenod - a été mise sur pied pour permettre à cette communauté de
jouer son rôle vis-à-vis de la Congrégation, sous la responsabilité directe
du Supérieur général.
Pendant que les travaux de rénovation de la maison d’Aix-en-Provence se
poursuivent à un rythme qui va nous permettre de reprendre les activités
au début de l'année 2013, la communauté commence à prendre forme.
Le Supérieur général a nommé le père Saverio Zampa comme supérieur et
trois autres Oblats comme membres de cette communauté : le frère Benoît
Dosquet - qui se trouve déjà à Aix et qui suit les travaux qui se font dans
la maison - et les pères, de la Province de France, et Joseph LaBelle, de la
Province des États-Unis. Ces Oblats, auxquels le Père Général ajoutera un
cinquième sous peu, reçoivent leur obédience pour la communauté d'Aix
(Administration générale).
Les activités de cette communauté, définies dans les statuts en fonction de
sa nature et de sa composition, seront surtout au service de la Congrégation
et de la grande famille mazenodienne.
