Prologue, tout de suite après le générique :

happenings.
… et après cinq plans de cameramen exposés au danger :

Première scène, Buster s’adresse à un passant qui s’est arreté devant son appareil :
3. ‘Take your tintype, mister ? They make fine ash-trays !’ (Buster)
…Buster et Sally se retrouvent seuls, couverts de confettis ; il insiste pour faire son
portrait :
4. ‘I make them just like you, Miss!’ (Buster)
Buster à la recherche de Sally s’adresse au portier devant un immeuble :
5. ‘Do you know who that is ?’ (Buster
6. ‘Maybe it’s Lydia Pinckham’ (le portier)
Entrant dans le bureau où elle se trouve, il montre la photo de Sally à un employé :
7. ‘Do you know her ?’ (Buster)
8. ‘What are you doin’, givin’ me a sleigh-ride ?’
…Il la découvre au moment de repartir, se présente et lui donne son portrait. Sally
ouvre son porte-monnaie pour payer la photo, Buster refuse :
9. ‘No charge. It’s a present.’ (Buster)
10. ‘I’d like to have you sit for another portrait… when you get off.’ (Buster)
11. ‘I won’t be trough for three hours’ (Sally)
12. ‘I’ll wait’ (Buster)
…Buster, après avoir examiné la caméra du rival, s’adresse à lui, en montrant sa
Wonder :
13. ‘I’m a photographer. Could I get a job here ? (Buster)
14. ‘Get a job here… with that cocktail shaker ?’ (le Rival)
… et Sally, seule avec lui, explique :
15. ‘You’ll have to buy your own camera before they’ll give you a trial here.’
(Sally)
16. ‘Don’t close up ! I’ll be right back !’ (Buster)
Buster, fier de son acquisition (une caméra Lucien Prévost en bois, d’occasion) est
revenu la montrer à Sally. Le Patron intervient :
17. ‘What are you doing here ?’ (le Patron)
18. ‘None of your business ! I’m waiting to see the boss !’ (Buster)
19. ‘Well… I’m the boss !’ (le Boss)
20. ‘Well… make me an offer.’ (Buster)

… prié de sortir, Buster s’asseoit et fait ses comptes lorsque survient un appel
téléphonique :
21. ‘The Grand Central Warehouse is on fire !’ (Sally)
… les cameramen partent en urgence et Sally suggère à Buster d’en faire autant :
22. ‘You ought to go photograph the fire, too !’ (Sally)
23. ‘They’ll buy any good film… so photograph anything that’s
interesting.’(Sally)
24. ‘It’s your chance to break in !’(Sally)
25. ‘I’ll bust in all right ! Watch me !’ (Buster)
Dans la rue, Buster se précipite sur un policier :
26. ‘Where is the fire ?’ (Buster)
27. ‘Up there, there's a fire down here, they said.’ (Buster)
28. ‘In which house ?’ (Le policier)
29. ‘No, it's not in a which house... It's in a Warehouse.’ (Buster)
30. ‘Now, where is it ?’ (Le policier)
31. ‘Where is what ?’ (Buster)
32. ‘Where is the which house ? I mean... which's the warehouse ?’ (Le policier)
33. ‘Which warehouse ? Where?’ (Buster)
Après le retour à la caserne de pompiers, un carton annonce :
34. Within an hour he was photographing everything from soup to nuts…
mostly the nuts.
… Buster, seul au milieu du Yankee Stadium vide, s’adresse au gardien :
35. ‘Aren’t the Yankees playing today ?’ (Buster)
36. ‘Sure… In St Louis.’ (le gardien)
La projection des rushes a été catastrophique; Buster est jeté dehors. Sally le rejoint
dans le couloir :
37. ‘Don’t be discouraged. No one would ever amount to anything if he didn’t
try.’ (Sally)
38. ‘You must ever grind forward… Never backward.’ (Sally)
39. ‘I’ll make good next time !’ (Buster)
40. ‘Tomorrow’s Sunday. Maybe you’ll let me take you for a nice long walk.’
(Buster)
41. ‘I’m sorry.. I have a sort of date; but give me your phone number.. I may call
you.’ (Sally)
42. ‘I’ll be waiting.’ (Buster)
Dans sa chambre, assis sur une chaise, Buster attend, tout habillé, chapeau sur la
tête :
43. From the peep of dawn on Sunday morning…
… et lorsqu’il l’a enfin au bout du fil :
44. ‘My date’s off, and….’ (Sally)
… K. traverse la ville en courant et surgit au côté de Sally, contrariée de ne plus
l’entendre répondre au bout du fil
45. I’m sorry if I’m a little late.’ (Buster)
… K. est introduit dans le salon de la pension où réside Sally, pendant qu’elle se
prépare à sortir :
46. ‘This is the young man who is to take Sally walking.’ (La directrice)

A la piscine. Buster se déshabille enfermé dans une minuscule cabine avec un gros
homme :
47. ‘This is my dressing room !’ (Buster)
48. ‘Shut up.. or it’ll be your coffin !’ (le gros)
49. ‘Will you keep out of my undershirt ?’ (le gros)
… dans le couloir, un baigneur a enfilé un maillot trop petit :
50. ‘Hey ! What is this, a suit… or a bib ?’ (un baigneur)
… des prétentieux plongent :
51. ‘The Big Sea Lion !’ (Buster)
52. ‘I’ll show you some real fancy diving !” (Buster)
… après son plongeon, Buster se retrouve nu dans l’eau :
53. ‘Let’s get out of here and go walking on the beach’ (Sally)
… il reste immergé, puis récupère une pièce du costume de bain d'une grosse dame:
54. ‘Help ! I’ve been robbed !’ (la grosse dame)

Sortie de la piscine ; le Rival survient au volant de sa « Cadillac LaSalle, roadster
convertible with rumble seat ».
55. ‘Hello, Sally ! Come on… I’ll drive you home.’ (le Rival)
… il se met à pleuvoir. Buster écope. Sally s’inquiète.
56. ‘But we couldn’t have him in here with us ! There’s never room for three’ (le
Rival)
… arrivés à bon port :
57. ‘I’m a little damp.. so I’ll go home.’ (Buster)
58. ‘I’m sorry you got so wet.’ (Sally)
59. ‘It was worth it… to be near you.’ (Buster)
… après un baiser de Sally sur la joue, Buster, euphorique sous la pluie, passe
devant le sempiternel policier :
60. ‘Where do you live and where do you work ?’ (le policier)
61. ‘Did yo ever find that great flame you were looking for ?’ (le policier)
62. ‘Oh… she’s so beautyful !’ (Buster)
63. ‘I’ll try your reflexes to see if you’re goofy’ (le policier)
Le lendemain très tôt au bureau
64. Monday morning.
… le Rival bouscule Buster :
65. ‘There’ll be nothin’ for you ! Beat it ! ‘(le Rival)
… Sally reçoit un coup de fil d’un informateur :
66. ‘Rendall talking. This chinese celebration may be interesting. Send a man
down.’ (Rendall..)
… et choisit de prévenir seulement K. :
67. ‘Chinatown is celebrating a holiday. It may be worth taking. Go on
down.’(Sally)
68. ‘I’ll make good this time, Sally.’(Buster)
Au coin d’une rue, Buster bouscule un mendiant et tombe sur son petit singe :
69. ‘Now, see ! You kill-a de monk !’ (le mendiant)
70. ‘Pay him for that baboon… or I’ll run you in !’ (un policier)
71. ‘It’s yours… you bought it ! Get it out of the way !’ (le policier)

Les gangs asiatiques s’arment et se préparent sous couvert de défilé :
72. ‘If the Wung Fa Tong starts anything, you know what to do !’ (chef asiatique)

Les cameramen de la MGM débarquent après la bataille :
73. ‘I took the whole blamed war !’(Buster)
De retour au bureau, Buster annonce à Sally :
74. ‘I got some great pictures of that Tong War all right !’ (Buster)
… mais il n’y a qu’un petit bout de pellicule dans la boîte :
75. ‘Pretty short war !’ (le Rival)
76. ‘I guess I forgot tu put film in the camera.’ (Buster)
… et le Rival l’interroge, devant le Patron :
77. ‘Say… how did you get wise to that Tong War ?’ (le Rival)
78. ‘Miss Sally told me.’ (Buster)
79. ‘Did you give him the tip, young lady ?’ (le Patron)
80. ‘It’s all your fault that this fool has been hanging around here !’ (le Patron)
81. ‘Don’t leave because of me. I’ll never bother any of you again.’ (Buster)
82. Tuesday morning : The Wesport Yacht Club Regatta.
Buster sur une barque, au milieu de la baie interroge son compagnon le petit singe :
83. ‘Did you change this film box in China town ?’(Buster)
… le Rival pilote un bolide sur l’eau, Sally à ses côtés :
84. ‘Look out you don’t get thrown out when I make this turn.’(le Rival)
… après l’accident, Sally reprend connaissance dans les bras du Rival :
85. ‘You’re awfully brave to have saved me.’(Sally)
86. ‘What else could a fellow do ?’(le Rival)
87. Wednesday morning.
Dans la salle de projection, quelqu’un tend une boîte au Patron :
88. ‘That little cameraman left this film here. He said you can have it for nothing’
(un employé)
… la projection provoquent des réactions enthousiastes :
89. ‘It’s the Tong War !’ (le Patron)
90. ‘That’s the best camera work I’ve seen in years !’ (le Patron)
91. ‘Get that man quick here !’ (le Patron)
Sur un trottoir, Buster a repris son ancien métier de photographe :
92. ‘I’ll never be able to thank you enough.’ (Sally)
93. ‘Everybody’s talking about you ! They’re all waiting to give you a great
reception !’ (Sally)
