Type of Services **Not for liaison ref individual patients** Meets every 3 months in Haiti (at HHH) Education The Haiti SCI (confidential) Database was created in March 2010 to try to identify and understand the issues surrounding spinal cord injury (SCI) in Haiti. It has been established that the majority of patients with SCI sustained in the earthquake (especially with complete/incomplete paraplegia) are still alive almost two years post trauma. It is the opinion of the Haiti SCI Working Group that these vulnerable patients are generally living longer if they receive appropriate care, and that this apparent increase in health status is directly related to NGO’s providing specific SCI care, education of local staff, patients and care givers, introduction of intermittent catheterisation to patients as well as an emphasis on position changes and skin care. Statistics are only as good as the information provided; Out of 250 cases known to date, 145 were earthquake related, with 11 deaths have been reported (due to overwhelming infection); This can only be seen as a glimpse of the reality, and there is a lot more work to be done to get a true picture. rea Haiti Type of Services Confidential SCI Database Prior to the earthquake patients, if fortunate to be admitted, would remain hospitalised in Non Government Organisation (NGO) hospital establishments, for differing periods of time. In other Haitian hospitals, patients were hospitalised for 1 or 2 weeks due to prohibitive costs and lack of understanding of SCI specific care. SCI Clinic development in Port au Prince: As an example, the Healing Hands for Haiti (HHH) Rehab Clinic (Kay Kapab Klinik) saw approx 5 patients with SCI prior to the earthquake. Following the earthquake, HHH, collaborating with Team Canada Healing Hands, focused on sending SCI trained specialists to Haiti to help meet the need of this specific client groups’ rehabilitation needs. In October 2010 the HHH Clinic reopened in temporary accommodation (having been destroyed in the earthquake). Since then, HHH has created and established its own dedicated SCI outpatient clinic service, headed by Dr F Moise MD, PM&R (only Haitian SCI specialist in Haiti), and now has over 100 beneficiaries with SCI registered. This number increases every month as new patients register. The main reason for this explosion of numbers has been due to a concerted effort by the Haiti SCI Working Group members to proactively focus on increasing the quality of care for people with SCI. Ce groupe (Spinal Cord Injury) a pris naissance au début de l’année 2010 après le
séisme du 12 Janvier. L'objectif du groupe est de collaborer et de trouver des

..Education Le groupe des lésions de la moelle épinière(SCI) en Haïti, a une Base de données (confidentielles) de Mars 2010 à date, pour pouvoir identifier et comprendre les enjeux entourant la question de la moelle épinière (SCI) en Haïti. Il a été établi que la majorité des patients avec des lésions médullaires
(SCI) provenus du tremblement de terre du 12, janvier 2010 (en particulier avec paraplégie complète / incomplète), sont encore en vie après un traumatisme de deux ans environs. Selon l'opinion du Groupe de travail (Haïti SCI), ces patients vulnérables vivraient généralement plus longtemps, s’ils recevaient des soins appropriés, et que cette augmentation apparente de l'état de santé serait directement liée à des ONG qui, fournissant des soins spécifiques, en matière de soins aux médullolésés . Et s’occupant également à la prise en charge de la formation du personnel local, les patients et les dispensateurs de soins. L’introduction des catéthérisations intermittentes pour les patients , ainsi que les soins de la peau.
Les statistiques fournis sont basés seulement sur les informations recueillies sur 250
cas (patients à lésions medullaires) connus à ce jour, dont 145 étaient reliées aux
séismes, et 11 décès ont été rapportés (due à une infection accablante). Cela ne peut

À titre d'exemple, la Clinique de réadaptation (Kay Kapab Klinik) à la HHH (Healing
Hands for Haïti) avait vu environ 5 patients atteints des lésions de la moelle épinière
(SCI) avant le séisme.
Après le séisme, la HHH, en collaborant avec l’équipe de la HHH du Canada, axée
sur l'envoi de spécialistes formés dans le domaine de SCI Haïti pour aider à répondre
aux besoins de ce groupe de clients spécifiques en réhabilitation. Comme elle a été
détruite dans le tremblement de terre, alors la Clinique de la HHH reouvrit ses portes
en Octobre 2010, dans un logement temporaire .Depuis lors, la HHH a créé et a mis
en place son propre service, dédié SCI clinique externe, dirigée par le Dr F Moise,
MD. PM & R (seul spécialiste haïtien en SCI pour Haïti). On compte aujourd'hui plus

nombre augmente chaque mois. La principale raison de cette explosion des chiffres, est due à un effort concerté par les membres du Groupe de travail (Haïti SCI working group) de manière proactive concentré sur l'augmentation de la qualité des soins pour les personnes atteintes de Lésions Médullaires.
