En bronze à patine doré, la coupe semi sphérique aux larges bords aplatis à décor de papillons en relief, reposant sur
quatre pieds, chacun figurant un chat stylisé. Estampillé 'A.A. RATEAU INVR FRANCE 1901 5396' au revers du bord.

HISTORIQUE
En 1930, Rateau acheta l'hôtel particulier du 17, quai de Conti, dans le VIe arrondissement de Paris, entre l'Hôtel des
Monnaies et le palais de l'Institut de France, qu'il rénova entre 1930 et 1931. Il en fit un lieu à la triple vocation : espace
de travail, d'exposition, et de vie familiale. Un laboratoire et un musée permanent. Rateau y réalisa chaque détail
décoratif. Deux exemplaires du cendrier aux papillons furent placés aux extrémités du canapé du salon.
Rateau purchased and renovated in 1930 the private hotel located between l’Hôtel des Monnaies and the Palais de
l’Institut de france, 17 quai de Conti in the VIth arrondissement in Paris. He made it a place of tripartite function :
workspace, exhibition venue and family home. It was in fact a permanent and vibrant museum and laboratory. Rateau
implemented there every detail, every embrasure, every ornament. Two copies of the Butterflies ashtray were placed at
the ends of the sofa in the living room.
