Infolettre EFBA février 2012 - French Education in the Bay Area
d newsletter é Feb 2012 u c a t i o n f r a n ç a i s e b a y a r e a Les Rencontresd’EFBA The quaterly teachers’ meeting is an opportunity to gather our team of highly motivated and talented teachers and assistants. D uring the meeting, teachers received a paper version of our report cards notice, which explains in details EFBA student’s evaluation philosophy and gives practical phrases ideas to our teachers, so that the families receive honest but gentle comments and instructional ideas/ support by the end of the month of January. The teachers should complete the report cards within a week and send them to the site coordinator for review, before he/she sends them to the families. During the “progression” workshop, teachers had a chance to work together in small level’s group and share instructional ideas as well as bring some support to each other on this crucial working tool, which helps plan the year ahead and pace the progress to cover the curriculum. After lunch break, Gabrielle Durana and I presented the new EFBA career path : new pay scale document, teachers review process and promotion system that had been adopted by the Board on January 16th, 2012. We are very confident that the new system and tools that we have shared are a big step for the association towards quality and professionalism, and that will contribute to the well being and professional growth of the EFBA teachers. Finally I presented the 2012 EFBA training project. Starting in February, assistants from the association who are interested in becoming teachers as well as interested candidates form outside the association (responding to EFBA selection criteria) are invited to participate to a special training. They will receive 5 master classes and participate to a traineeship from February until June. I would like to address a special thank you to our amazing team of teachers who took on their family time to come and participate to the quarterly teachers’ meeting, as well as Catherine Ferenzick who took some pictures. “A successful program away from the classroom” EFBA’s first A-Musée-vous museum excursion held on December 11 was a great success. It is unmistakable that with your support EFBA is able to continue providing trips to your children who are showing a sincere interest in learning the French language. For this first A-Musée-vous, we staged an event where the children would take charge and, while practicing their French, embark on a scavenger hunt to find clues which would in turn lead them to find Monsieur Marcel Lupin (our fictional villain). We mimicked the organization taken from the EFBA classroom and transferred it to the museum—dividing all of the students into specific age groups in order to more effectively segment the learning material. Each child was then encouraged to follow the clues through the museum to locate M. Marcel. In addition to the children being able to practice their French as well as meet other children from neighboring cities, EFBA was able to introduce the children to what we call in French “Médiation culturelle”, connecting the public (in this case, the students) to the masterpieces and subsequently expanding their cultural knowledge. What we at EFBA aspire to create is an atmosphere where the student is able to identify with the Francophone culture. Thanks in grand part to Cecile’s efforts, we have now implemented a successful program which takes the students away from the classroom, but at the same time continues their French education through the use of more Liz Villegas, coordonnatrice à Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, nous a spontanément fait part de son enthousiasme face à la récente sortie du 29 janvier : “Les enfants se sont très bien amusés et même moi j’ai appris quelques faits très intéressants!”. Elle ajoute : “The outing adds such a depth to EFBA. Instead of just classes, it shows that we can also offer a range of fun and impressive cultural outings to further promote the french culture and language, which kids (and adults) can learn from and truly enjoy!” engaging techniques. This also helps greatly to keep the students actively participating, which can be hard when one’s experience with French is only known in a classroom. We hope that with the creation of more excursions, we will excite the current students and attract new ones. Being able to speak French in a social situation while also learning about Franco culture is just one of many steps EFBA is taking in order to provide for the Francophone and Francophile community in the Bay Area, and we thank you for showing your continuous support.
