PREVIEW : SC BASTIA - OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE
SC Bastia - Olympique de Marseille Feature Preview
Constant speculation surrounding the future of coach Míchel has overshadowed the build-up to Olympique de Marseille's difficult trip
to Corsica to face SC Bastia at the Stade Armand-Cesari on Sunday afternoon.
The Spaniard's future at OM has been the subject of much discussion over the international break with Marseille's struggles being
epitomised by their capitulation in losing 5-2 at home to Stade Rennais FC in their last outing two weeks ago.
That result meant the southern giants ended March languishing in 12th place in the table, six points clear of the relegation zone
having failed to win any of their last seven Ligue 1 games. For now Míchel remains at the helm, but he surely needs a positive result
in Corsica as Marseille look to haul themselves into the top half of the table and away from trouble in the next few weeks before they
go to FC Sochaux-Montbéliard for a Coupe de France semi-final that could yet define their season.
As well as the speculation about the coach, OM have dominated the headlines in relation to president Vincent Labrune's apparent
attempts to find a new buyer for the club. However, for now the only focus is on Bastia and Spanish full-back Javier Manquillo has
insisted that the players are still right behind Míchel.
While on duty with his national under-21 side, the on-loan Atlético Madrid man told Spanish sports daily Marca that he was flourishing
in France thanks to the coach and expressed confidence that results would soon improve.
"At the moment things are going quite well for me personally. Since Míchel came in things have gone well for me and I have to thank
him for giving me so much confidence," Manquillo said.
"I am very happy. What I needed was playing time and I am getting it there, because of the confidence Míchel is giving me. And that
is why it is also a shame that things are not going well for the team in general, although everyone in the dressing room is with the
coach to the death and we will get out of this."
Marseille are on a club record run of 13 home league games without a win since defeating this weekend's opponents 4-1 at the
Vélodrome way back in September. In contrast, their away form remains impressive, with OM unbeaten in their last 11 league
matches on their travels. Indeed, they have lost just one of their last 18 games on the road in all competitions.
However, there are few harder places to go than Furiani, with only champions Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais having
collected more points at home than Bastia coming into the weekend. François Ciccolini's side were beaten by LOSC in their last home
outing, but that is their only loss in their last seven matches after they came from behind to draw 1-1 in Bordeaux two weeks ago.
Ciccolini's squad is boosted this weekend by the returns of both Mehdi Mostefa and Yannick Cahuzac after suspension. Sadio Diallo
is out for the rest of the season after undergoing a hernia operation and Florian Raspentino will miss the meeting with his old club due
to a thigh injury. In addition, leading scorer Floyd Ayité and defender Florian Marange have been struggling with knocks. There are no
such issues for Marseille, although Míchel must judge the condition of his many players who have been away on duty with their
countries over the last fortnight before deciding on his line-up.

Claude Makelele and his Marseille counterpart Marcelo Bielsa.

both also played for OM, were among the scorers for the home team. Didier Drogba netted Marseille's goals from the penalty spot.
- Bastia's biggest wins at home to Marseille in the top flight are their 4-0 victories in October 1973 and again in February 1977.
Marseille's best results in this fixture remain their 3-0 wins in November 1970 and March 1986.
- The Furiani disaster of May 5, 1992, occurred when a temporary stand at the Stade Armand-Cesari collapsed prior to a Coupe de
France semi-final between the teams, killing 18 fans and injuring more than two thousand.

clear of the relegation zone. They ended that season in ninth place.
- Marseille have not been higher than eighth this season. They were not in the top half of the table at all until the start of December
and they sat 19th after losing their opening two games of the campaign.
- In their last outing, OM suffered a catastrophic 5-2 defeat at home to Stade Rennais FC in front of 40,077 fans at the Stade

SC Bastia
- Founded in 1905, Sporting Club de Bastia are in their 33rd top-flight campaign. They first appeared in the elite in 1968. Last season,
Bastia finished 10th and reached the Coupe de la Ligue final, losing 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain.
- Bastia have been second-tier champions twice, but their only major trophy success is the Coupe de France in 1981, when they beat
Saint-Etienne 2-1 in the final with Cameroon great Roger Milla among the scorers.
- After a best-ever third-place finish in 1977, I Turchini also reached the UEFA Cup final in 1978, losing 3-0 on aggregate to Dutch
side PSV Eindhoven.
- Their 16,480-capacity Stade Armand-Cesari is in Furiani, just outside Bastia, and was the scene of one of Europe's worst stadium
disasters when, on May 5 1992, a temporary stand collapsed prior to the Coupe de France semi-final against Olympique de Marseille,
killing 18 fans and injuring more than two thousand.
- François Ciccolini replaced Ghislain Printant as coach in late January 2016 with the side 15th, three points above the relegation
zone. Ciccolini, who had been one of Printant's assistants, is in charge until the end of the season.
- Previously in charge of Bastia's youth academy and reserve team, Ciccolini had a first spell at the helm of the first team during the
2004-05 season, but left the role with four games of the campaign remaining. The Corsican club were eventually relegated, finishing
second-from-bottom.
- Printant was promoted from his role as the club's youth academy director when Claude Makelele was sacked in November 2014. A
goalkeeper during a very modest playing career, Printant was initially appointed on an interim basis before being handed a two-year
contract in the spring of 2015.

Essien.

only to Saint-Etienne, who have ten titles. OM also have a record ten Coupes de France (1924, '26, '27, '35, '38, '43, '69, '72, '76 and
'89) and three Coupes de la Ligue (2010, '11, '12).
- OM were stripped of the title in 1993, after being found guilty of match-fixing.
- Marseille are the only French club to have won the Champions League (1993), Basile Boli scoring the only goal of a 1-0 win over AC
Milan. OM were runners-up in 1991, losing 5-3 on penalties (0-0 a.e.t.) to Red Star Belgrade, as well as reaching the final of the
UEFA CUP in 1999 and 2004.
- OM's home stadium is the Stade Vélodrome. Renovations - in preparation for hosting matches in Euro 2016 - saw capacity rise from
48,000 to 67,000.
