However, this attribution could not be verified. The work has now tentatively been attributed to Jacques Louis David on the basis of two paintings by the artist, that these drawings could be a study for. The drawing for the female could be associated with the painting Bélisaire demandant l’aumône, in the Palais des beaux-arts, Lille, inv. no. P436. The drawing for the lying male could be a study for the painting La douleur et les regrets d’Andromaque sur le corps d’Hector son mari, in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. no. D.L. 1969-1. Further research is necessary to confirm the attribution to David. A reference to one David drawing titled Frauenkopf can be found in the papers of Cornelius Gurlitt.
