It’s a first in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean. The Minister of Education, Dr Vasant Bunwaree has announced
that our students will soon participate in the deployment of Argo floats, an observation system for the Earth’s
oceans, for use in climate prediction, weather forecast, oceanographic and fisheries research in the Indian
Ocean.
The Ministry of Education has established collaboration with Lady Amber Research Vessel in favour of students of
secondary schools so that they will be provided with real time date through Argo.
In this context, in January 2013, some 80 secondary schools will be engaged in this programme with the vessel.
Participating schools will be able to use data like readings of water temperature, movement of current, density and
weather to enrich the present curriculum in Marine Biology, Science, Mathematics and other related subjects like
Geography and Agriculture. These data will be useful in the study of climate change and climate prediction.
Schools will also get information in plankton, salinity in the water and position of the floats. Data on forthcoming
tsunami and earthquake can be obtained as well. All information will be received via satellite and may be
interpreted by different departments as appropriate at school level.

“Interested students may also be taken on board of Lady Amber for a few weeks for one of its programmes when
the vessel will be in our waters in April 2013. This is an extraordinary opportunity for our students as they will
obtain first-hand data from the floats, 24h, which they may access even from their homes,” explained Dr Bunwaree.

In November 2012, the Ministry will organise a half-day workshop with rectors and Heads of Departments of
Science subjects to create awareness of the programme and by the end of the month, interested colleges (state
and private) will be registered for the programme and the list be sent to the Captain of the vessel, Peter Flanagan.
In December, the floats will be named after the schools while the first data will be received from the floats in midJanuary. Students will be able to receive data directly from the account of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) and the National Aviation and Space Association (NASA).
