Introduction
Dedicated to photography since 1985, the Musée de l'Elysée is celebrating its 25th anniversary in
2010. A State institution founded by Charles-Henri Favrod, the Musée de l’Elysée will loose the
services of its director William A. Ewing during this jubilee after 14 years dedicated to developing and publicizing the museum’s activities.
New direction
Sam Stourdzé succeeds him and has become head of the
st
institution on the 1 of May 2010. He offers visitors a rich
and varied summer programme with four exhibitions on
two sites: the Espace Arlaud and the Musée de l’Elysée. To
mark this celebration, the public is invited to a “Nuit de
l’Elysée” in the gardens of the museum and at Espace Arlaud on June 18th from 6:00 p.m. to midnight. This event
will showcase the diversity of the museum’s activities, both
in exhibitions and conservation through screenings with
music, all in a festive spirit.

TOMORROW’S PHOTOGRAPHERS TODAY
Opening of the exhibtion and Nuit de l’Elysée
Musée de l’Elysée
Friday June 18 2010, 08:00 p.m. to Midnight
Exhibition from June 19 to September 26 2010
What are young photographers up to in the twenty-first century? How do they see the world? How
much do they respect, build on, or reject tradition? As the digital revolution continues its relentless
advance, demolishing longstanding practices in every domain of our field, curiosity builds as to how
the new generation of photographers will operate. The reGeneration project – the broadest and most
enterprising survey of its kind – set out in 2005 to discover answers to these intriguing questions,
while revealing emerging photography in wide-ranging fashion. Following on from the success of this
exhibition shown in ten different cities across North America, Europe and Asia, this second edition
turns the spotlight on 80 up-and-coming talents from 30 countries.
The Musée de l’Elysée selected the most promising candidates from some 700 entries submitted by 120
of the world’s top photography schools. The curators tried to keep an open mind throughout the selection process, whether the photographers had chosen a documentary or an artistic approach, whether
they worked with film or computer, and whether they supported their work with a detailed concept or
preferred shooting spontaneously.
reGeneration2 showcases the inspiring creativity and ingenuity of photographers at the outset of their
careers, as they navigate in the fast-moving currents of the second decade of the 21st century. It shows
these young practioners focusing on major themes as diverse as the urban environment, globalization,
issues of identity and memory, their use of hybrid techniques allowing them to obscure as never before
the distinction between reality and fiction.
From early July the exhibition will also be presented in France at the Rencontres d'Arles, following which
it will embark on an international tour in Cape Town, Milan and New York.
The project has been made possible through the support of
Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre, Loterie Romande, Office fédéral
de la culture OFC, Friends’ Circle of the Musée de l’Elysée, Fondation Leenaards, Ernst Göhner Stiftung, Pro Helvetia, Boner
Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur, Minerva Kunststiftung, Uniquement
vôtre, the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, the Consulate General of
New-Zealand, the Embassy of Israel and the Embassy of Germany
in Switzerland.
The exhibition, produced by the Musée de l'Elysée, was curated by
William A. Ewing and Nathalie Herschdorfer, and is accompanied
with a book published by Thames & Hudson (UK/France) and Aperture (USA).

Masters of time, masters of vision
Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrates the art of photography in
conjunction with the Musee de l’Elysee and the reGeneration 2
Exhibition
from June 19 through September 26, 2010.
One seizes the moment, the other appropriates eternal new beginnings. Both
photographer and watchmaker share a passion for time and its mastery. In their
different ways, both capture it to better apprehend reality, creating masterpieces that
reflect an era, a culture or vision. It is in this spirit that the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre
is partnering the international exhibition, reGeneration, to be held at the Musee de
l’Elysee in Lausanne from June 19 through September 26. This is the second time that
the watchmaker will partner this event, the first having taken place in 2005. By choosing
to sponsor the work of 80 promising young photographers from all over the world, the
brand is celebrating the creativity, openmindedness and emotion that only Art, of which
it has been the ambassador for more than 175 years, can transcend.
Sublimate time. Understand it and escort it. Submit to it to better tame it. Since 1833,
Jaeger-LeCoultre lives according to the rhythm of time supreme, which reigns with
impunity, which coordinates the actions of men and conditions life. Time which can be
both accomplice and challenge to the point of becoming a reason for being. Perennial
time, of which the master watchmaker is the guardian and the photographer the
interpreter. Jaeger-LeCoultre sees many significant parallels between watchmaking and
photography is considerable.
In 2005, the brand participated in the first edition of reGeneration, allowing those
photographers selected to immortalise a day in the life of Manufacture and to see their
work published in an exceptional work called “Portraits de Manufacture”. A year later,
Jaeger-LeCoultre became the privileged patron of the Jeu de Paume, that famous
Parisian institute that oversees the influence of photographic culture all over the world.
The historic connections between the Manufacture and the world of photography go
back some three-quarters of a century, to the 1937 birth in the Vallee du Joux of one
of the most revolutionary cameras of the era: the Compass.
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s engagement with the world of the image and photography in
particular symbolises its attachment to Art and its commitment to transmitting know-
how. Supporting emerging talent is a means for the Sentier based Manufacture to bring
to light the creative diversity without which cultural wealth could not continue to exist.
More than just a partnership, reGeneration is a human adventure, inspired by the past
and resolutely turned towards the future. This is akin to watchmaking – in perpetual
movement, enriched by its heritage and making it possible to be more open to
innovation. Both watchmakers and photographers alike know that creative energy is an
almost divine, alchemical product of passion and skilfully mastered technique. An
alchemy synonymous with emotion, conveying a distinctive vision of the world.

A short history of the invention of the Compass
The Compass was the product of the imagination of British businessman, sometime
poet and highly skilled engineer, Noel Pemberton Billing, who was also behind the
aeroplane which inspired the Spitfire. The aim of the Compass was to unite as many
functions as possible in a case the size of a pack of cigarettes …. Only Jaeger-LeCoultre,
creator of the famous Calibre 101, the smallest mechanical movement in the world,
could rise to the challenge of the miniaturisation required by this project. Its conception
took three years of development at the heart of the Manufacture.
Launched in 1937, the Compass had its thousand and one functions which, quite apart
from its avant-garde design, earned it a resounding success: incorporated filters, light
meters, angle finder, lenses for panoramic and stereoscopic pictures, posometer,
rangefinder, telescopic lens hood … it remains a rare collector’s item to this day.
Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre
Born of an invention, the Great House has always been driven by a spirit of discovery,
the need to create new technical wonders, always more precise and ever more
complex. Year after year, knowledge and know-how have been enriched, renewed,
multiplied to serve one sole goal: to master the innumerable operations involved in
manufacturing watch movements and cases, the ultimate prerequisite for taking on the
most daunting technical challenges.
A major player in the history of watchmaking, Jaeger-LeCoultre has celebrated its 175th
birthday. The Manufacture has to its credit an array of world firsts, superlative
accomplishments and legendary timepieces including the Reverso, the Duoplan, the
Master Control, the Memovox Polaris, the Gyrotourbillon1 and the Atmos. Today,
some 1000 people, masters of over 40 watchmaking crafts and more than 20 cuttingedge technologies, continue to pay tribute to the pioneering spirit of the brand’s
founders by creating new masterpieces in the grand watchmaking tradition.
In 2010, with the extension of Antoine LeCoultre’s original workshop, Jaeger-LeCoultre
will expand even more with the advent of a new building providing 9000 square metres
of additional workshop space.

ESPACE ARLAUD – PLACE DE LA RIPONNE
Opening
Thursday June 17, 2010 at 06 :00 pm
THE PRIX PICTET WINNERS
ESPACE ARLAUD
Exhibition from June 18 to July 25 2010
The Prix Pictet is the world’s first prize dedicated to photography and sustainability. It has a unique
mandate – to use the power of photography to communicate vital messages to a global audience.
The goal is to uncover art of the highest order, applied to confront the pressing social and environmental challenges of the new millennium.
As Kofi Annan, the Prix Pictet’s Honorary President says in his recent forward to Earth – the book
of the 2009 Prix Pictet, ‘together, these photographs by the artists shortlisted for the Prix Pictet
highlight the beauty of the earth we share. But they also expose the damage, deliberately or carelessly, we are inflicting on our own environment. So these images are a celebration and a reminder of the urgent need to change our ways.’
Entry to the Prix Pictet is by nomination. There are currently over 130 nominators from five continents. The nominators for the Prix Pictet are a group of leading experts in the visual arts from
around the world including directors or major museums and galleries as well as journalists, critics
and distinguished experts in the fields of sustainability. For the third cycle of the Prize the Jury
(comprising a group of seven) will be led by Professor Sir David King, Director of the Smith School
of Sustainable Development, Oxford University and former Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government. Following an assessment of the work in a gallery setting, the Jury selects the winner of
the Prix Pictet who receives the prize of CHF100,000.
In addition to the prize, one of the shortlisted photographers is invited to complete the Prix Pictet
Commission which involves the production a series of images based on a region where Pictet &
Cie is supporting a sustainability programme.
The theme of the first cycle of Prix Pictet in 2008 was Water. It is, after all, through water that we
are seeing the earliest and most devastating manifestations of the climate change.
For the second Prix Pictet in 2009 the theme of the award was Earth, which in this context refers
to the planet and the soil beneath our feet, and to the marks that man makes on the face of the
land.
The exhibition at the Musée d’Elysée will showcase the two winners of the Prix Pictet 2008 and
2009: Benoit Aquin, and Nadav Kander and the two commissioned photographers Munem Wasif
and Ed Kashi. Presented together for the first time, this will be an opportunity to see outstanding
photographs by these internationally acclaimed photographers. Together, they will present a
powerful testament to the fragile state of our world.
PRIX PICTET 2008
Benoit Aquin (Canada, 1963), winner
Aquin won the Prix Pictet for his series The Chinese
Dust Bowl which shows probably the largest conversion of productive land into sand anywhere in the
world. Three hundred million people are affected by
dust storms in China and this series of photographs
examines scarce water resources, desertification and
ecological refugees in the Republic. Since winning the
award Aquin has continued to develop work that is an
artistic response to the pressing social and environmental challenges of our times. For the exhibition at
the Musée d’Elysée Aquin will show new work from his
recent (2010) Haiti series. This is a series of work that
captures the despair of the earthquake which left over
200,000 people dead. Benoit Aquin is a photojournalist and landscape photographer exploring large-scale
environmental issues and their impact on humanity.
He has exhibited in major photographic events in Canada, and his work is part of the collection in the Canadian Contemporary Photography Museum. His photographs have been featured in publications worldwide.

Munem Wasif (Bangladesh, 1983), commission
Wasif’s series Climate Refugee of Bangladesh documents
the climate refugees of Bangladesh who have to relocate as
a result of too much or too little water as caused by global
warming. Wasif has worked as a photojournalist for the
Daily Star, a leading English daily in Bangladesh, DrikNEWS
and Agency VU. His photographs have been published in
numerous national and international publications including
Le Monde and Forum. He won an "Honorable Mention" in
the 2007 All Roads Photography Program by the National
Geographic Society. His global exhibitions portfolio includes
the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Japan
and Getty Image Gallery in England.

PRIX PICTET 2009
Nadav Kander (Israël, 1961), winner
Kander’s series Yangtze, The Long River documents the rapidly changing landscape and communities of China’s Yangtze River, from its mouth to source. More people live on the
river’s 6500 km of banks than in America, however, China’s
current programme of development is destroying the country’s heritage and displacing many of its people. Kander is a
regular contributor to many international publications, including The New York Times Magazine, for whom he recently documented ‘Obama’s People’. His many interna-
tional awards and nominations include most recently the
Silver Photographer of the Year Award at the Lianzhou International Photo Festival 08 in China.

Ed Kashi (Etats-Unis, 1957), commission
Madagascar is classified as one of the world’s top three
‘hotspots’ for biodiversity; yet it is also one of the poorest
and most environmentally challenged countries in the
world. Through the pictures that Kashi made there we see
the compromised beauty of this threatened island. Kashi
says ‘this Commission for the Prix Pictet is in direct response
to the global cry to stop and take responsibility, seen
through the dignified and vibrant people of south-east
Madagascar’.

RAPHAËL DALLAPORTA
PROTOCOLE
ESPACE ARLAUD
Exhibition from June 18 to July 25 2010
It is with special attention that the Musée de l’Elysée has
been following the career of the French photographer
Raphaël Dallaporta (1980), who five years ago was included
in the reGeneration exhibition. His talent came to the fore
in 2004 with his ‘Antipersonnel’ series. His images of landmines, which are characterized by meticulous detail, gave
rise to both fascination and repulsion. In 2006, he continued his work with the ‘Esclavage domestique’ series (Domestic Slavery), which portrays the ordinary facades of the
dwellings of illegal domestic workers. The photographer has
chosen to keep his distance from the victims who are not
portrayed, reflecting the hidden life of these mistreated
people who could be our neighbours. The ‘Fragile’ series,
which dates from 2010, is part of a similar approach,: the
organs of dead people are put aside – like evidence – to determine the cause of death. Again,
the object is documented from the front and at a distance. The strength of Dallaporta’s work
arises from the confrontation of ‘neutral’ images and texts dealing with human suffering. Human beings are absent from Dallaporta’s photographs and yet they are central to his work.
Following a policy aiming at supporting young artists, the Musée de l’Elysée has decided to acquire a large collection of photographs by Raphaël Dallaporta and organise his first solo exhibition
at the Museum. A monograph will be published by Xavier Barral publishers (Paris) in parallel with
the exhibition.

LE MUSÉE DE L’ÉLYSÉE EN AFFICHES
ESPACE ARLAUD
Exhibition from June 18, to July 25, 2010
As part of the events marking its 25th anniversary, the
Musée de l'Elysée goes back over the posters that made its
history.
For the institution, the poster is the primary means of communication, which requires a subtle relationship between
typography and photography. The poster provides the public image of the museum and participates to its identity. This
flashback allows us to offer a retrospective of the exhibitions of the Musée de l’Elysée and to pay a tribute to our
graphic designers: Werner Jeker for the period 1985-2001
and Valérie Giroud since 2002.

THE SCREENINGS
Jean Mohr, Photographies pour un été is a tribute to the famous Geneva photographer,
whose estate has just been donated to the Musée de l'Elysée by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation.
The selection of images shows an overview of nearly half a century of commitment to the photographic medium throughout the world. It reflects the large diversity of interests of the photographer and the effectiveness of his style.
Travel through the collections of the Musée de l’Elysée offers a journey through the most
beautiful images that the Musée de l’Elysée has collected since its founding in 1985. A geographical and historical voyage, where old images interact with contemporary photographs.
reGeneration2 : Tomorrow’s Photographers Today
2
reGeneration showcases the creativity of 80 emerging photographers from 30 countries. Their
work covers topics as diverse as urban space, globalization, identity and memory through practices that are often hybrids and that more than ever blur the lines between reality and fiction.

vites Strates to celebrate its 20 anniversary. Created in 1990 by 3 friends, the group now includes 13 photographers, a graphic designer, collaborators and a collection of photographs.
NEAR - Helvéties
www.near.li
Switzerland is the raw material of many photographers of NEAR. In various approaches, they
draw from their country of origin issues that seem relevant and whose photographs represent a
composite whole. This screening proposed by
Pauline Martin presents a collective and diverse portrait of Switzerland. NEAR was created in
Lausanne in January 2009 to promote contemporary photography.
JR www.jr-art.net
The Musée de l'Elysée invited JR to submit one of the movies based on his work Women
are Heroes. This unusual artist owns the largest art gallery in the world. JR exhibits freely in the
streets of the world, attracting the attention of those who do not visit museums. His work mixes
art and action and processes of engagement, freedom, identity and limits. JR displays his work,
uninvited, on the buildings in the outskirts of Paris, on the walls of the Middle East, on the broken
bridges of Africa or in the favelas of Brazil and soon to be seen in Vevey.
THE MUSICIANS
Aklak 5tet
Formed in 2009, Aklak 5tet is a band of varying size composed of young Swiss and French musicians from different musical origins but driven by the same love for jazz and improvised music.
The AKLAK musicians offer music rooted in tradition without neglecting the new trends in current
jazz, influenced by their own experiences through multicultural collaborations.
Aklak will perform arrangements specifically created for the screenings of John Mohr and the
NEAR collective.
