● Hartling earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, California, in 1977; in 1978 he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the College of Art and Design, in Halifax, Nova Scotia; and was awarded his Master of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montréal in 1981.
