● I am interested in the ways we try to navigate an essentially uncharted expanse of a lifetime. The tools and comforts we take with us or find will sometimes steer a progression, sometimes deepen disorientation. This common metaphor—the journey—is as rich with the treasures of discovery as it is with counterfeit booty, uninhabitable ideas and vandalized human endeavours. Like using metaphors in conversation, I think about the colours or textures with which we characterize unknown entities, to give dimension and proportion to what is unfamiliar. By this process we comfort ourselves and chart discoveries for future reference. Grids, arrows, tick marks and shiny objects that beckon toward understanding, rest, riches or home all comprise this blueprint or schema of a journey, whose structure is both glimpsed and generated, whose parts seem to fly up just as one takes a step.
