Backgrounder: Circle of All Nations and Peace Building
This project is inspired by the work of the late Algonquin Elder William Commanda,
and his outreach and leadership in the capital city. In 2000, Grandfather Commanda
organized the Millennium Circle of All Nations Peace Gathering at Nepean Point, to
acknowledge the United Nations Decade for a Culture of Peace.
Consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous
Peoples, sharing local perspectives across cultures on the path to reconciliation
with Indigenous Peoples and all others is a key step to building a stronger centre of
peace in the City of Ottawa and the National Capital Region. Circle of All Nations is
honoured to host this special event and to launch the 8th Ottawa Peace Festival,
during this, the 100th year of Grandfather Commanda’s birth.
In view of the passing of President Nelson Mandela and the 100th Year of
Grandfather William Commanda; their respective receipts of Wolf Awards; and His
Honour, Mayor Jim Watson's Proclamation of a Day of Reconciliation in their
honour, the focus of this year's event will be on linkages with Africa. We shall also be
highlighting William Commanda's prayer and influence on the United Nations
International Day of Peace.
At the 2000 Millennium Circle of All Nations Peace Gathering at Nepean Point, the
former Governor General, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, participated in
a special circle discussion on peace-building at this event. Later that year,
Grandfather participated in the UN Peace Conference in New York, and with then
Excellency, John Ralston Saul, participated in the Boreal Rendezvous canoe
launch from Victoria Island. In 2005, Cercle de Paix and the Mayor of Montreal
presented him with the pacifist of the year award in celebration of the first
September 21 United Nations International Day of Peace. Over recent years, he
inspired and supported citizens of Ottawa in peace day celebrations. Associated
Peace Day activities include the Global Walk for Peace, National Capital Region,
Canada, Peace Walks in Montreal and Victoriaville, Quebec and New York also
honour Grandfather's legacy!
Grandfather Commanda's passions included peace building and environmental
stewardship. He dedicated the last forty years of his life to creating a Circle of All
Nations, Culture of Peace. Entirely unsupported by any organization, he reached
the hearts of diverse communities, nationally and internationally, with his love,
wisdom and prayer for peace. Also a canoe builder of international renown, over
seventy-five of Grandfather’s canoes carried this energy around the world,
including to Queen Margrethe of Denmark, from whose land the first newcomers
arrived on Turtle Island.
Grandfather William’s lifetime of efforts was acknowledged with Master Canoe
Builder and Bill Mason River Conservation recognition, receipt of the Key to the City
of Ottawa, appointment as Officer of the Order of Canada, Lifetime Achievement
with the 2010 National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, receipt of the Wolf,
Harmony, Bernard Assiniwi and Martin Luther King Dream Keeper Awards, and two
Honorary Doctorate Degrees.

Ce projet est inspiré par le travail du défunt Grand-Père William Commanda, par son
leadership et ses efforts de sensibilisation dans la capitale nationale. En l'an 2000,
Grand-Père William Commanda a organisé le Rassemblement pour la Paix du
Millénium du Cercle de Toutes les Nations à Nepean Point afin de reconnaître la
Décennie des Nations Unies pour une Culture pour la Paix.

la proclamation de l'Honorable Maire d'Ottawa, Jim Watson pour une Journée de
Réconciliation en leur honneur, le focus de cet événement portera cette année sur les
liens avec l'Afrique. Nous mettrons également l'accent sur la prière et l'influence de
William Commanda sur la Journée Internationale pour la Paix des Nations Unies.
Durant le Rassemblement du Cercle de Toutes les Nations pour la Paix du nouveau
millénium en l'an 2000, l'ancienne Gouverneure Générale du Canada, L'Honorable
Adrienne Clarkson a pris part au cercle de discussions spécial sur la construction de la
paix. Plus tard, au cours de cette année, Grand-Père Commanda a participé à la
Conférence des Nations Unies à New-York et lui et son Excellence John Ralston Saul
ont participé au lancement du canot lors du Rendez-Vous Boréal sur l'Île Victoria. En
2005, le Cercle de Paix et le Maire de Montréal lui ont présenté le Prix du Pacifiste de
l'Année en célébration de la première Journée Internationale pour la Paix le 21
septembre.
Au cours des récentes années Grand-Père William Commanda a inspiré et encouragé
les citoyens d'Ottawa à célébrer une Journée pour la Paix. La Marche Globale pour la
Paix de la Région de la Capitale Nationale est associée aux activités de la Journée pour
la Paix. Des marches pour la Paix à Montréal, Victoriaville et Québec honorent
également l'héritage laissé par Grand-Père Commanda.
La gérance et défense de l'environnement, ainsi que la construction de la paix faisaient
partie des passions de Grand-Père Commanda. Il a dédié les dernières 40 années de
sa vie à la création du Cercle de Toutes les Nations-Une culture pour la Paix.
De par son amour, sa sagesse et ses prières pour la paix, Grand-Père Commanda a
franchi et touché le cœur de plusieurs communautés sur le plan national et international
et ce sans soutien d'aucune organisation. Il était aussi un bâtisseur de canots de
renommée mondiale et plus de soixante-quinze (75) de ses canots portent son énergie
à travers le monde, y compris celui de la Reine Margrethe du Danemark, d'où
provenaient les premiers nouveaux arrivants sur l'Île de la Tortue. Les efforts qu'il a mis
tout au cours de sa vie ont été reconnus quand on l'a nommé « Maître de la
Construction du Canot » et lorsqu'il a reçu les clés de la Ville d'Ottawa et également
quand il faut nommé Officier de l'ordre du Canada et aussi lorsqu'il fut reconnu en 2010
pour son travail continu par « National Aboriginal Achievment Award » qui lui a décerné
le prix pour « Life Time Achievement », et égalementi lorsqu'il faut récipiendaire des prix
suivants : Wolf, Harmonie, Bernard Assiniwi et Martin Luther King Dream Keeper
Award, et aussi lorsqu'il a reçu deux Doctorats Honorifiques.
