La naissance d'un ordre caché Cristallisations de_ Cristallisations is the latest temporary exhibition organised by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès at La Grande Place – musée du cristal Saint-Louis in Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche (Moselle) – part of the Foundation’s action to support new art in the making at its exhibition spaces in Brussels, Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo, and in co-production with leading public museums (Simple Shapes at the Centre PompidouMetz). The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès presents two exhibitions each year at La Grande Place, focused on new contemporary art through the prism of artisan expertise. The themed, collective shows are devised in association with a cultural institution in the Lorraine region, and in collaboration with the Cristallerie Saint-Louis. Each partner institution will co-produce a season of three successive exhibitions. The guest institution for 2014-2015 is the Centre Pompidou-Metz. A. The New Year’s Gift or The Six-Cornered Snowflake was the first scientific treatise to study the harmonious, geometric form of ice crystals. Always unique, with its shafts and branching forms, its flat circle reminiscent of a flower or a six- or twelve-pointed star, each snowflake begins life as an unchanging, minuscule hexagonal matrix. How to explain the phenomenon of spontaneous, symmetrical self-organisation that produces crystalline networks of unparalleled order, from the chaos of matter as gas? For Kepler, the study is the starting-point for a poetic, mystical reflection on the hidden laws working to instigate beauty and harmony in Nature. Kepler defines the elementary figure of the hexagon as a ‘cosmo-poetic’ form, at the origins of the structured world: ‘From this nextto-Nothing, this minuscule atom of snow, I came close to recreating the entire Universe, which contains everything!’ Inspired by Kepler’s cosmo-poetic research into the geometric splendours of ice crystals, the exhibition Cristallisations – La naissance d’un ordre caché (‘Crystallisations: genesis of a hidden order’) presents works, documents and scientific films which take as their starting point the emergence of structure from chaos and diffuse matter, oscillating between chance and necessity.
