Selon l’histoire orale, une croix avait été placée par un
prêtre sur une roche dans la mer pour tenir à l’ écart
les mauvais esprits des personnes « mal décédées »
qui se promenaient au cours des nuits.
Puits
Mention a été faite d’autres sources d’eau fraîche
à Dilo Pourri et au puits situé près de la plaine de
football. Il existe encore des ruines de ce puits dans
l’ancien village de l’Embrazure.

Beaucoup de villageois
ont affirmé être allés
sur Ilôt Fourneau pour
chercher de l’eau d’un
puits d’eau fraîche
qui s’y trouvait. Ilôt
Fourneau est situé en
face dans la mer à 600
métres du village.

Le Paysage Culturel, proclamé
Patrimoine National le 24 janvier
2006, jouit d’une très haute
protection officielle sous l’acte
du Patrimoine National (2003) et
l’acte du Morne Heritage Trust
Fund (2004). D’après cet acte, La
Fondation du Partimoine du Morne
a été établie le 28 mai 2004 pour :
• Gérer et protéger l’entité
physique du Morne;
• Préserver son symbolisme et
• Encourager la recherche sur
l’esclavage et le marronnage.

Mondial le 10 juillet 2008.

Elle est un symbole de la lutte des
esclaves pour la liberté, leur souffrance
et leur sacrifice. Tout cela a une
pertinence allant au delà de sa position
géographique, vers les pays d’où
viennent les esclaves – en particulier le
continent africain, Madagascar, l’Inde
et l’Asie du Sud Est et representés par
la population créole de Maurice aussi
bien que leurs mémoires partagées et
leurs traditions orales.

Four à chaux
La production de la chaux était une activité
importante depuis la colonisation française de l’île.
La présence de four à chaux le long des côtes était
commune, y compris au Morne.
Vieux Cimetière
D’après un des informateurs âgés, né à Trou Chenilles,
ce cimetière situé à côté de la plaine de football
existait avant sa naissance. Selon l’histoire orale, des
esclaves y seraient entérrés.
Trou Chenilles
Trou Chenilles était un petit village situé au pied de la
montagne du Morne Brabant en face de Ros La Croix.
Cet ancien village contenait environ 50 cahutes.
Boutique Ah Yee: ruines
L’unique boutique était
un centre vital depuis son
premier emplacement à Trou
Chenille. Elle approvisionnait
les villageois en besoins de
base. Selon les témoignages,
les villageois se sont déplacés
avec la boutique.

Le précipice en V
Un élément important de la montagne est le précipice en V que
semblait-il, les marrons traversaient pour atteindre le plateau
éloigné au sommet. Ce point étroit peut, quand même, être
considéré comme « la clé vers la montagne ».

According to oral history, a cross had been placed
by a priest on a rock in the sea so as to keep away
the evil spirits and souls of the ‘badly dead’ which
wandered at night.
Well
There has been mention of other fresh water sources
at Dilo Pouri and at the well at the football ground.
Ruins of the well still exist in the ex-village
of L’Embrasure.

community and it is
venerated by them.
The Limekiln
Lime production was an important activity since
the beginning of the French administration on
the island. Limekilns were common features in
coastal areas, including that of Le Morne.
Old Cemetery
According to one of the oldest informants who was
born in Trou Chenilles, this cemetery located next
to the football ground existed since he was born.
According to oral history, slaves were buried there.
Trou Chenilles
Trou Chenilles was a small village located at the foot of
Le Morne Brabant Mountain facing Ros La Croix. The
ex-village comprised about 50 huts.
Ah Yee Shop: ruins
The unique shop was a vital
point in the village ever

villagers with their basic
needs. Testimonies reveal
that the villagers moved with

The V-Gap
An important feature of the mountain is the V- Gap, which
maroons apparently crossed to reach the remote plateau at the
top. This narrow point can indeed be considered the
“key to the mountain”.
